Adore Mme Alfred Carriere and have her growing in Christchurch NZ. One of her best features is few thorns but she can quickly get a bit out of hand! Being an heritage rose, in NZ she’s best pruned after early flowering but thankfully gardeners don’t have hard and fast rules and Mme is very forgiving. Mon Don says she survives a radical chop!

She certainly is a forgiving rose and so easy to grow . the two on the barn had a radical chop during the building work and have come back beautifully

I agree 100% best time to prune is after her first flush although she he will recover after a radical chop later in summer which we’ve had to do the last couple of years she doesn’t flower as well the next year as she flowers on the previous seasons growth

I too, absolutely adore this rose. I've planted 3 of them already, and would plant more if my hubby would allow it😂 I love her delicate blooms, her fragrance, her forgiving nature, and even the thugishness of this rose. We cut back to the main framework in the autumn, and are rewarded with blooms from late spring through to late autumn. The birds seem to love it too, and we have sparrows and little blue tits which regularly hang out in her branches. Thank you for your video - it's so wonderful discovering another enthusiast💖🌹💕💕💕

Dear Mr blakeney, i stored this Film with this stunning Rose and your way of pruning IT for a possible later planting, which has to be pondered on deeply before: the Fixation of the climbing scaffold and so on. There is nothing comparable to such a delicate Rose. Thanks for this good Film. Perhaps there is a day when i have overcome all the nettles on the ground and planted substitutes Like fruit shrubs, camelia and perennials in the little grove. The complete Layout of the ground has to be done before. I shall have some climbers of old Roses and Clematis planted with trees together before. I have to renovate the guest House before i can consider the planting of such a Beauty. Wonderful! Many thanks for all the inspiration. IT May Last at least 2 years Till i can think of planting such a Rose. A good and healthy mild Summer without drought for all of US. Katharina zwing

Its a wonderful rose how wonderful to have it already there. We have planted one on every house we've ever owned since we discovered it about 20 years ago

Very interesting this video. Many thanks To see a Madame Alfred remain 8ft or so and be kept pretty tight to the wall that is interesting. What are your thoughts on an east facing wall that sees sunrise to about midday?

Thank you for sharing your technique, I've been looking for a video like this! I do have a question as I planted my MAC last spring. Mine is south facing, hoping to keep it on the low side like yours. Does your south facing one bloom the whole summer? If not, do you get a second bloom after pruning?

Thank you for checking, she is doing great! She is still very young, only has two canes. I had a pretty good first flush of blooms but nothing since then. Hoping for more blooms next year 🤞@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316

After watching many times your inspiring video, I ordered a Mme Alfred Carriere and just planted it this afternoon on the north facing wall of my house. The one I received has five or six stems and is about 35-45 cm high. May I ask how you would prune it for a start? Maybe i should let only one or two stems?
@gardenerscottageblakeney1316

We don't usually prune them in their first year after planting unless you have to, we just let them do their thing and train them onto wires. Once they are established we shape and prune them quite radically each year after flowering back onto the wires.

@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 Many thanks for your attention. Yes, the rose is striving on the North wall and I already had a couple of flowers. I will soon try to train them onto wires, the way you are doing. It's a magnificent rose, even if it lacks any good exposition, as it is full North at the foot of this wall. Also, we have friends in Kent who, after seeing it in the spring when visiting us, ordered one and planted it North as well!

That’s wonderful to hear . I find they take a couple of years to establish and then should reward you with lots of flowers .
