I'm an arborist and the issue is the spike holes may insects and diseases to enter. The outside of the tree is where are the nutrients is flowing up-and-down through the roots and canopy. In the industry it is frowned upon. But if you're not doing it the Trees close to houses or prize trees okay I guess. Just don't tell an arborist. Spike holes may be an issue on trees that are dying. Also please be careful with slip outs and please have a good way to get out of a tree fast in case of emergency. Figure eights are good for this. I would use my spikes but they are way too loud. But I have no problem spending eight hours in them.

alexp703 I am too, but if you hunted, youd realize how non invasive this method is compared to using climbing treestands, which the vast majority of every day hunters use. Climbing treestands poke several hundred holes in the cambium layer per climb up and down. There’s 10-20 teeth per each section on the treestands, so one step up with the top and bottom peice will put anywhere from 10-40 holes in the cambium layer. Then at an average of 20 ft per climb, that could be hundreds of holes in a tree compared to 20 or less in most cases using spurs

Like Alexp703, I'm an arborist. In my work, I only use my hooks on trees we're going to remove. You're really doing some serious damage to most trees when you spike them. Those buckles are surely not rated to take the load of your body. I use spikes a lot and rhey come with heavy leather straps and a belt buckle style for a good reason IT IS STRING ENOUGH to hold you witbout breaking and causing your foot to slip out of the spike
@flinginairos

They don’t need to be load rated to handle your body weight. They simply hold the spike in place on your foot which is what is holding the weight. The G hooks I currently have on my carbon spikes can handle some weight. Never had a single issue with them. The leather straps are no doubt the safest option, but I hated them.

Coming from someone who has done tree work. You only use spikes If the tree is coming down completely while doing a tree job. Maybe something like a shagbark hickory they won't bother it but on a maple or other smooth bark tree like a beech your damaging the tree. I worked for asplundh for 4 years and left and went to private work because they were spiking trees that did not need to come down. If power company's do your trees tell them to only spike trees that are coming down. Its just because of laziness. Without spikes its harder but we live in a lazy society where everyone wants the easy way out. But everyone is following the Native American saying of killing your grandchildren to feed your children. Only when the last tree has been cut, Only when the last fish has been caught, Only when the last river has dried, We will learn we can not eat money. Native American proverb that your children and there children will probably learn because of how we left them.

"The misconceptions are they are loud and dangerous, along with a bunch of stuff that just isnt true" What like how spikes dig into the cambium layer allowing mites and disease to enter the tree that has been there for 100's of years so you could use it for one day?

Look at your mr environmental with a profile pic of a carbureted engine! Does that pass emissions? The ozone hasn't been there for millions of years just so you can ruin with your muscle car! .. sounds stupid right? Smh

@@garrettwilson1215 that was the dumbest response I've ever gotten. First off that motor was for a customer i could give to fuqs what they do with it. Secondly a muscle car does not cause a tree disease that can be passed onto other trees. People like you are why i dont vote pro life, some people should have been aborted.

@@willyjilly9684 It actually wasn't dumb at all. I was pointing out how you are contradicting yourself. I admittedly was assuming that you were defending the trees and taking a position against these spurs because of the damage they cause. Which means anyone that would make that argument should stop driving cars, using electricity, buying and using plastics or anything from china for that matter, using paper, having camp fires, flushing the toilet, and so on because all of these damage the planet. A lot more that spur holes in tree in fact. You just look silly backing the trees but obviously support high emission output engines which is also damaging to the environment. I never implied that a car causes disease or mites in trees. Don't know where you got that from. I was making a comparison. Again, just to point out your contradiction. I apologize that I can't write this in crayon so that you can understand it better. You probably were a mask under your nose while in those sweet ass cars don't you. And the news that YOU vote is saddening. You probably voted for Biden lol And why would you have a pic up of a car thats not even yous lol douch bag.
