I can tell you that just from what I see in my little city, people are having kids, lots of kids. I work retail, and every time a family comes into the store, they have at least two kids with them, and that's AT LEAST. Most of the time, I see four or more children. I always cringe when I see them because they get in my way when I'm trying to work. So if there's that many kids in my little city, you know there's plenty more in other areas of the world.

@@briannamorrison380I studied in Korea and there is a noticeable lack of kids and an aging population. But there is no larger childfree movement or community. With patriarchal roles still strong, women are reluctant to sacrifice their careers to put most of their time serving their child and husband. Alongside a culture that emphasizes a successful career, people’s ambitions aren’t in raising a family. This is a larger societal issue that makes it almost hostile for anyone who even remotely wants to have a child which goes beyond individual choice. I can see America going this way in a few generations because staggeringly high living costs and low wages, combined with minimal government support because austerity. In the current status quo it is definitely preferable to not have kids rather than to have them, but if it continues to be difficult to have kids in today’s society, then we may very well lead to an aging population worldwide.

My mom used to pressure me to give her grandchildren when I was in my 20’s, even though I was vocally childfree and married to another man (so no chance of us having an oops moment together). I should note that I have three older siblings, all of whom have children. Finally in my late 30’s she’s stopped. I think this happened after she realized that I’m the only one with free time who is actually able to be there when she needs something. Guess who volunteered to take care of her after her hip replacement.

Whenever someone says, “What do you do all day?” What they really mean is, “what could you possibly choose to do with your time that would be as important as what I’ve chosen to do with mine?” And it’s such a hateful thing to say. Every person in society is benefitting from people who made different life choices than them. I’m grateful for the people who build houses, make music, farm fruits & veg, raise animals, sew clothing, open restaurants. And all those people who have the bravery to explore scary places like caves, the ocean and space and turn those terrifying (to me) experiences into HD video that I can watch on my couch with my fam. Is it really so hard to celebrate our differences when they’ve made all of our lives so grand? Whenever I hear someone say, “What do you do all day?” I know I have one less friend then I thought I did and it’s such a sad feeling.

Seeing unattended children fills me with murderous rage for the parents. I had this occasion where I was in a mall and this boy about 3-4 y.o. was crying so desperately. Everybody else saw it and just shrug it off or look the other way. I tried to talk to the boy but he was too young to communicate his identities, I tried to get the security guard's attention (I didn't want to drag the boy away to bring him to the guard for fear of traumatizing him), then the boy ran towards the parking lot. I panicked and get between him and the door. Then from about 20 yards away, his father motioned the boy to come over. The parents were looking at a display in the main area and they did not even think about whether the boy was still with them. They didn't even bother to walk over to him, they expect him to scurry to them. I was livid and wanted to give them a piece of my mind; but then the guy I was with at the time just said if they don't care enough about their child, whatever befalls the boy is probably a sign that they should not have kids in the first place. It would be tragic if the boy ran into the parking lot and died, but that's not anyone's responsibility but the parents.

I agree about the death part. I feel that her dying kinda goes against the idea that her turnaround was a good thing. Unfortunately for a story to happen a character has to have a realization and her standing up for herself would not be as meaningful if she didn't feel the pressure to conform. People are affected by others opinions. The main character is young and may not have known herself that she was ok. People you trust and care about have a big effect. But people supporting her choice (her dad) and herself dying while the husband and company gets to go on gives a weird message.

@@raichutoyouI felt it was hinted that the company and their trial would be implicated in her psychosis, the homicide and death bc of all the women in the clinic watching her rip the device out of herself and then start leaving the building. Not to mention the woman ripping hers out and h@nging herself in the very first scene. It definitely implied it was happening to *all* of them. Her husband may get to go on, we don't know if it will effect him mentally/emotionally or his profession. Her death, to me, symbolized the tragedy of forcing someone to "fit the mold" and showed viscerally what can happen when we pressure and force women to have children.
@nicolina1026

I loathed her husband, and wanted her to stand up and be stronger too, but also understood that with literally *nobody* supporting her, the odds of her cracking a bit and thinking something was wrong with her were exponentially higher. It's human nature, she was being constantly manipulated, brainwashed and gaslit. In the beginning we're led to believe the husband partially supports her, and we find out that's not the case, and by the time the father comes around, has a change of heart and apologizes it's too late bc she's drugged out of her mind and can't hear him. I actually viewed the end quite differently. She ended up meeting her oldest ancestor/s and smiling with a tear, and it was implied the ancestors accepted her for who she was. The message I took from it was "look at what you do to those women who don't want children, this is what you'll drive them to". It was a message and a warning that nothing was wrong with her, and trying to fix something that isn't broken only ends in horror and tragedy. Much like the movie Prayers for Bobby.

I watched the movie. I understand Ella so much. My father immigrated to the US and wants to continue our legacy through his grand children . I have a step sister who has three great kids, but this is not sufficient for my father. I am his I only genetic daughter. He has now started saying " Is the dog all I should expect from you." I have health issues that make conception and pregnancy very risky. Yet, everyone wants me to have a child. They preach to me the discomfort is worth the reward. I struggled with saving my fertility and decided my health is more important than a future child. I have never wanted to be pregnant and equate it to stabbing myself in the thigh. You're changing yourself forever and everything from that moment will be different . You can go back to old activities, but the experience won't be the same. Even my patients, whom I have never met, before experiencing their emergency, council me to reproduce. I have been happily married for eight years,a successful medical professional ,and a continuing education student. I have never desired children , nor thought " mom" is a word that describes me. My child's free bingo comes from every crevas of the earth. I could cure every type of cancer and that wouldn't be as big of an accomplishment as motherhood. I didn't laugh at the kitchen scene. I was more concerned about her husband not confronting her weird behavior. I laughed when she broke the clock. I wanted to break the clock . I would have gone to the creepy clinic too as a last ditch effort. There are no childfree women in my family or in my religion. If you are childless ,you better have a medical excuse and explain how you have not conceived with medical advancements. Our culture doesn't allow that. I understand her desire to feel normal. I suffer from feeling out of place too. It can be lonely being childfree. I thought the salamander was a manifestation of her father's words. The evolution of her family was wasted. Even in death guilt and shame. The salander has even managed to reproduce.

It reminded me of how depression is portrayed in visual media, which reminded me of the mad doctor’s statement that Ella’s lack of desire to procreate was a mental illness like depression, and that they can “fix” her. When what they actually did was instill a whole mental illness in her that she didn’t have before. from the way you described the ending i took it as 'you dont want to have a kid, you realized that and our big hormone plan failed, so you can just die now then' which is what i hear a ton (the you can just kys cause you are useless if you dont want kids) and its really sad.

I reeeeally want someone to make a film where a man gives birth ... not some jaunty Junior-type nonsense, but an extremely graphic body horror where the pregnancy progresses against his will, and it's reminiscent of that movie "contracted" about a girl who gets an STD that slowly ravages her body and turns her into a zombie. I think it would be eye opening for men to see pregnancy from the perspective of relatable human beings as opposed to umm... women.

Yeah show them getting ripped apart and restitched but never being quite the same after. Bring out of whack for 2+ years hormonally. Loosing or leaving their jobs. Doing most of the child rearing after bc they have to breast feed and it just carries over from there. The whole 9 yards beyond just the 9 months.

Basically this movies is about the price to pay to be different and non conform to the society expectations. And also for the color my hypothese is that she used to see and to live life in color, myltiples faccettes, multiples possibilities and when she entered in the "motherhood mode" life lost colors, colors representing the possibilities of life, choices.etc for her. When she took the implant away she could see those colors again.

I know it's hard for some of you to understand. I am 55 and that that wonderful age where IDGAF but when I was younger I did try to fix myself to be more like everyone else. It didn't work. I couldn't do it. It's HARD to be different. It's really really hard. You don't want to be the cat rescuer lady (I used to say there are too many of two things. cats and kids) because everyone laughs at those people but you want that life personally so you end up one anyway. So the fact the main character tried to fix herself isn't surprising.

I’ve always been a non-conformist. I got a certain amount of pressure to have a child when I was younger, but I just ignored it. I don’t need anyone‘s approval except my own. 😊 P.S. I love cats, though I don’t have one at the moment. 🐈⬛

In my opinion, I think that the ending of the film leads one to believe that all women who decide not to have children are going to end up paying a heavy price or are always left as the villains of society. That's why I would like to see more movies of women who do not want children in happy and satisfying endings.

Ya know, come to think of it: when you’re talking about the tragedy part of her killing her dad when she mistook him for the clock, and he was actually coming around to her true decision? And his voice drowned out? I wonder if it wasn’t those hormones actually kicking in and blocking his words in a way that clouded her judgement, made her trip out and go postal. Like hormones: “uh oh, he’s about to contradict us, we need to shut him up, but also blur her sight so she doesn’t figure it out!” Something like that

I think the point of her death at the end of the movie is that the world is illustrate the hostility of the world toward childfree people. That because of other people's manipulations and pressure, that they are the reason we don't get to have fulfilling lives, even when we take our autonomy into our own hands. We pay the price for their bullshit.

Im so happy that this movie exists, its a great way to show my relatives how much i wont succumb to the generational brain washing. Im never gonna have kids. I dont want to. And that should be enough of an answer. Im glad that in the ending she dies, because she fr ended her blood line, WILLINGLY. The salamanda appeared on the rock as in "you go girl, i have my puddle of eggs, you have none, and thats fine!" Imo, also because the dad said to her that he agreed with her being child free and said "yes the salamanda ancestor gives you her blessing as well", right before her artificial hormones killed him. I love that in the end she didnt go "oh now finally i get it, now after im free from the implant i can think for myself, i DO want children!" Would have been such a bummer.

From your review it sounded like the hormones only make her want to fertilized her eggs that's probably the reason why there's metaphor for eggs everywhere and her desire to have s€x. Which i think it's a little bit funny because even if your eggs are fertilized and you give birth you can just leave and not be a mother. And the last thing i wanted to point out is her husband he is a doctor in this facility what is exactly the success rate of the women being a good mother in this hospital because it looks like they all end up being crazy and he's just ok with that he end up having a psycho wife? Or did he only marry her to experiment on her which is so gross and disgusting. 😢

I am very happy that my family never pressures me to have children, the economy in my country sucks, and my mother and father know that more children would only cause more problems, they are more interested in me finishing my studies, and I have two other cousins who just have no interest in having kids, and my one of my aunts is child free as well. The closest thing was my grandmother saying that eventually my cousin (30s) and I (20s) eventually would want to have children and we told her no, and since she doesn't want to start fights she just preferred to change the subject, and hasn't mentioned it again.

Thank you for making this video. I wanted to watch Clock, however, not only do I have anxiety, but I also have a serious problem with movies that piss me off getting to live rent free in my head for far too long… so I was waiting for a review. I am beyond pleased that they didn’t change her mind but like you, I’m sad to hear the ending wasn’t good for Ella. With that being said, I can’t say I hate that they did it that way. It shows that there are major consequences to going against your internal instincts! (And while exaggerated in most instances, it shows the risks of injecting yourself with hormones - you don’t know how they will affect your brain!)

After watching this movie, Sam Sparro's 'Black&Gold' is a great song to chill out to. It might be random, but all of the symbolic imagery had me feeling the song on another level. Also, I found it absurdly hilarious when Aiden *ahem* injured himself. Men, please understand that is not how "lady parts" work. You cannot get so deeply in as to injure yourself like that. Even with a medical device implanted.

Makes me wonder of they were implying it was implanted over the cervix, or in it (and it hadn't fully gone in yet, thus the 3 week wait time) which could be the only way she or he could have access to it, to remove it or when he injured himself.

For the amount of BS she went through to “want” kids she should’ve just had them. Plenty of people just have em and figure it out later or just hate it and power through on the pros and try to forget all the cons. This is most people, if we’re being honest. I just don’t believe there’s anyway someone can be HAPPY not wanting kids but also willingly go through hell to just WANT to have them just because everyone else says it’s what she should want to do? Clearly she must’ve wanted kids to begin with and just was insecure about the timing because of other things be it her husband or her career etc. I guess I’m not a follower or people pleaser enough for this to make ANY sense to me. If you want to want something then you want it in my book.

This sounds like a fun little horror movie about a really interesting topic :D I'm also childfree and I'm blessed with having plenty of support from family and friends for making this choice. I only had a brief period in my late 20s where my biological clock went absolutely apeshit because people around started having babies left and right. I was prepared for that reaction, though, and decided to give it three years and if I still wanted kids after three years, then it was meant to be. My biological clock was ringing for two years and then I snapped back to my normal self. I'm glad that despite being a very emotional person, I have always been the type to make big life decisions based on rationality rather than emotion. I think I have avoided many disasters that way. Btw, my partner is a very laid back person. He's always been like: if we have kids we have kids. If we don't, then we don't. I just wanna be with you. He's great :D I have since noticed that being child free has actually been beneficial to other people around me. My partner has noticed the same for himself. My colleague can go home earlier to pick up the little ones and be a parent because I don't have anywhere to be and I can stay a bit longer and I can get ahead on projects where we would otherwise be struggling to meet deadlines if we both had kids. It's not that my colleague doesn't get their work done. Lord no. I don't know many people who a more hard working nor more disciplined than them, but the kids come first and that's a philosophy we both share, so it gives me joy to know that I can make sure many things are getting done so my colleague can go home and play with their kids without worrying about deadlines. When I visit family, I'm usually on aunt duty, not always, but sometimes, and I get to make good memories with the kids kids while the parents and grandparents can take a little break, if they need it. I have so much respect for parents and for what they do and I am very happy that they have respect for me and what I do too. I dunno if I'm just lucky or if all this baby nagging is mostly an American thing. It's not really a thing where I am. Or at least in the circles I move. People are so chill about it.

I never wanted children my whole life and it drove me crazt how often people would say "youll change your mind" But god dangit they were right 😭 after i met a man that i am so crazy about i cant wait to share in that experience and life with him. So frustrating to admit to everyone around me that after all that pestering they were rjght, i DID change my mind 😅 That being said i do think there are genuinely people out there who dont want kids, wouldnt find that fufilling at all and people should just mind their dang buisness on if orher people decide to have kids or not!!!! Even if someone like me does change their mind the pestering certainly didnt influence me at all!!! It actually made me more certain. And my partner never tried to change my mind either, i changed it based on my own feelings around what i wanted my future to look like and for me that involved children with this man. I went into this video expecting to be annoyed at some point but all of your points are extremely valid!!! A good review of the film as well.
