Technically it's not a war crime, Geneva convention doesn't exist in the SW universe, and the republic and CIS are probably not signatories even if it does. USSR was not a signatory of the geneva convention, thus had no restriction on what could be done to them and what they could do to others. That's part of why the Eastern front was so much more brutal.
@Praetor_Jeep3r
2 жыл бұрын
@@kauske Technically you're correct. That still doesn't make war crimes ethically or morally correct.
@kauske
2 жыл бұрын
@@Praetor_Jeep3r You know more than half of the stuff in the Geneva convention is entirely innocuous, right? Hollowpoint bullet are a war crime as well, for instance. So hare shotguns, it's 99% arbitrary with only a few things tossed in, that are truely terrible, like not executing POWs or firing on Red Cross or medical units. Even if the Geneva convention applied, the CIS slaughters civilians and medical personnel constantly, you can hardly blame the Republic for not holding back against an enemy that doesn't even accept surrender unless it's for a POW with information. Geneva also convention doesn't cover things like 'enhanced interrogation', nor does it forbid military assets from being placed into civilian areas to use them as war-crime inducing meat shields. Next to no country today adheres to the Geneva convention anyhow, so why would a fictional world in which it doesn't exist do so? If you actually look at the convention, a lot of it is arbitrary when the objective is to kill your enemy. Hell, blasters would be a violation of the convention wholesale, they are effectively incendiary and thus would be prohibited like WP and flamethrowers. So every time someone shoots a living person with a blaster, it's a war crime. Further, the CIS uses robots, which aren't alive, and thus not protected by the Geneva convention. There's no rules about what you do to equipment, so long as there are no living people attached to it. And that's not even getting into if the Geneva convention covers the non-human species at all. It's worded to protect humans, and as it is now doesn't at all apply to non-humans of any kind.

Remember when the jedi council pretended Obi-Wan got shot and didn't tell Ahsoka and Anakin about it. The episode shows him getting shot, "dying" in Ahsokas arm, his funeral, the killer celebrating killing a jedi and Mace telling Yoda that killing a jedi was a good plan, before they reveal Obi-Wan is still alive. Or the time Fives and Jessy were to be excecuted by their brothers and because they didn't kill them, Krell sent clones out to kill clones. Or that time Ahsoka was framed for a murder and had to escape her death sentence. Or that time Fives was framed for trying to kill Palpatine and executed by his brothers. Or the time Ahsoka and Rex had to kill and bury their whole legion and had nowhere and noone left to turn to.

George Lucas: "It's for kids." SW fans: "IT'S 2 dARk 4 kiDs!" In all seriousness, the CW TV show was for the most part, kids. That doesn't mean you have to be a kid to watch or enjoy it. There were kids shows being made not long before this, and with top tier writing, and just as many dark moments. Just look at Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited. These are all kids shows, but you watch them now, as an adult, and they are just as enjoyable. Excellent story writing, and with many serious tones to them. We need to stop lying to ourselves about this.

An insult to Star Wars? It took some of the worst characters and made them good. JarJar was made palatable, Padme was given more dimensions than just “politician who likes a murderer”, Anakin was made into the cocky hero everyone _wanted_ back in the day and you also see his fall to the dark side, clones actually have personalities, Palpatine’s plan gets fleshed out.
