I don't think Remi was bothered by the reactions of others. I think Leo was. And Leo's reaction towards him broke Remi's heart.

I agree. Remi may also have had some mental health problems, it was hinted at from his mother saying she didn’t like it when he locked the door; to Remi telling Leo he can’t sleep because he can’t turn his brain off. It was sweet how Leo would help him mellow and fall asleep. After about 20 minutes I forgot I was watching a movie and felt like I was just watching their lives.

Other people are the problem. A true, correct takeaway. And such a beautifully done movie. Thoughtful, sensitive review. Good job.

I felt for Remi. I've had a close friend who decided to just start ghosting me. Not calling anymore. Barely taking my calls. Always "busy". Denied anything was up. Wouldn't tell me what the problem was. It's a slow death and there is a lot of despair. Eventually I said "I no longer consider you a friend of mine" and he replied "well if that's how you feel." Horrible thing, but it happens.

They had the perfect life. One we all dream of. The society destroyed it. I have never been so emotionally affected by a film before. And, it is very clear that they love each other, and this transcends friendship.

I really enjoyed this film. The themes of platonic love and brotherhood that can be corrupted by assumptions were fascinatingly to watch play out. My only criticism is that I think there needed to be one more scene between the school yard fight and the bus trip reveal. That scene set later that evening at Leo's home were Remi confronts Leo about the distancing of the relationship. They are alone without outside influence and Leo, while still maintaining that they are friends, acknowledges that their "close" friendship can not continue. This is the final rejection that pushes Remi to carry out the reveal on the bus. It gives Remi's decision more weight and not a highly emotional whim. Otherwise, a very moving film that the two new actors handled well.

It stuns me that people are so quick to say the Leo and Remi aren’t gay. Sure, they’re 13, so they likely haven’t figured that out, but coming from a gay director, and seeing that Leo and Remi are obviously way too close to be only friends, there has to be more between them, even if they both can’t put their fingers on it. The film isn’t just about close friends grappling with social pressures, it’s also about dealing with your sexuality in the modern world.

But is it though. A lot of kids at that age are close like they are. The above context would say that but the underlining context is how we’re thrust into this box even at a young age. The idea of them being gay or not isn’t even the main thrust of the movie but just how people are told to do one thing even if their beliefs are another.

@@MovieEmporium I understand that, the film clearly makes no comment on the sexuality of the boys. However, surely you can see that if you allow for the confusion felt by Leo and Remi, it adds another layer to the struggles that the two go through. The experience that they are going through is EXACTLY what figuring your sexuality out looks like. Like, exactly. Speak to any gay person and they will tell you that this is the exact stuff they went through in school, the questions, the looks, the laughs etc. I’m not saying that this film isn’t about everything you say it is. I wholeheartedly agree that the film is about the boxes society places us in and how toxic masculinity etc influences us in a way that doesn’t align with who we are, but I think it’s naive to completely overlook the clear themes of figuring out your sexuality in those exact same social pressures.

@@UnkleRiceYoI think if you read Deep Secrets by Niobe Way, you would understand why this is not really an LGBTQ film. Deep Secrets is the book the director was inspired by to make this movie.

I'm looking forward to seeing this film. Once I can find out where to see it. The big screen would be nice, but if I get emotional, it may be better to view it at home. Does it have subtitles?

A normal human being...did you really say that? Even though it's a foreign language film...did you really just say that? They're not gay...did you really just say that?

I think you misunderstood what he said. He didn't say anything wrong. Leo absolutely did start to feel pressured to be what others thought was a "normal human being." The reviewer didn't say that the other kids who made Leo feel that way were correct about what's normal. Also, you can't say Leo and Remi aren't gay just like nobody can say they are. They are depicted as completely non sexual. Eden Damrine is gay in real life and Leo could have been too. But that's not the point. It's a movie about toxic masculinity.

I cried during and after the movie and it shook me to my core. I guess it triggered some feelings in me. In an age of “trigger warnings” I personally feel that being triggered is not always a bad thing it just means we need to deal with things we haven’t worked through completely. Ultimately the movie is a message about healing and in the end, was an inspirational film, not just a sad one and for me, very cathartic.
