BACKSTORY:
Incredible drone video(taken from my drone) from the landslide that is occurring in 8 Peartree Lane in Rolling Hills Estates shows just how much damage the landslide has caused to the houses there, even splitting rooms in half. In one of the videos, a kids basketball rim can be seen in a backyard, with the backyard being nearly cut in half right in front of the basketball rim where kids play. In another video, it can be seen that a bedroom & living room are split in half right where the beds and couches are. It can even be seen that some houses have the top of their roof being on the same level as the sidewalk that was used to walk into their houses. What’s most noticeable from all the footage is a big split/line in the land that shows the land sliding into the canyon, almost looking like a scene seen in the famous movie “2012”.
It’s important to note that from the last post that I covered about this, it was only 12 houses that were evacuated due to this natural disaster, however, now less than a dozen or so more houses have been evacuated, and another 17 more homes are being monitored by the LA County Fire Department (LACoFD). This comes as the LACoFD determines that this landslide is bigger than what they had originally thought, and now more homes are in danger. LACoFD had stated all they could do at this point is let nature do its thing and wait until all the houses fall into the canyon, as it is too dangerous and risky to go in as the land is still sliding. The land has so far shifted 20 feet since it started, and it continues to grow. Professionals who cover Geological Sciences state that the landslide is most likely not 100% due to the steepness of the hill or the rocks below - as the land is moving way too fast for that to be the main cause - but rather it is water that can cause this land to move fast. Speculations state that this year's heavy rains were what could be a major factor that could have caused water to play a main role in the landslide. This landslide will go down in history for being one of the most unprecedented & major landslides in the South Bay, and even in California.
To make matters even worse, criminals have taken advantage of the evacuated houses, and on 7/13 some had broken into the evacuated houses and taken items& belongings of those who lived there. Luckily the LA County Sheriff's Department(lomita station), and with the help of the Torrance Police Department, were able to catch the suspects and arrest them in a difficult search. Bravo!
