I personally don't understand everyone's need for so many buttons. I was attracted to Fuji because of its manual, film camera like feel. The only issue I have with my X-E4 is the placement of that Q button like mentioned in the video. The top front button is great for AF mode, front dial setup to aperture and ISO, and everything else doesn't need on the fly access and gets added to the Q menu. Many times I see people neglecting to properly configure their Q menu. The lack of a grip I see as a pro, not a con as some see. Fuji offers a good one along with Smallrig who's has a taller, larger grip. I like the idea of getting one that works best for me (or none at all) vs. living with the size of the one on it.

I think this was a misstep by Fuji. There are lots of serious, advanced Fuji shooters who prefer the rangefinder-style cameras over the other models in the Fuji lineup. Fuji could have gone minimalist without removing the AF mode switch or the rear command dial. Just those two things would not have affected aesthetics at all, yet would have provided so much functionality that is now sadly missing. As it is, I will now not be upgrading my X-E3 (which I fully expected to be doing), and I suspect I am not alone. I like everything about the X-E4 except for the dumbing down of the controls - Fuji need to remember that external physical controls are what brought a lot of photographers over to Fuji from other brands - taking those controls away again is not a smart move! I'm very disappointed with this latest X-E upgrade. :(

Yes I’m hearing the same thing from most of my photographer colleagues and friends. I’ll make sure to pass this info on. I still feel this X-E4 is only in name. It’s an upgrade/replacement of the X70 and X-A5, not really an upgrade of the X-E3.

I co-sign this times 100. Fuji f****d up in my opinion. Should have been an upgraded version of the X-E3. The swipe features makes me want to cry. Oh and the X-E3 looked way better with the grip. What I liked about the X-E series was that it felt like a mini X-Pro...
@Hazard4Tactical

Absolutely agree! And if the xt40 comes out with more controls it’ll have a side-flip screen because of the flash/Evf bump! This flip over screen is the best solution as it stays in-line while also being a selfie screen! And since Fuji doesn’t have multi-interface shoe like Sony you can hang a microphone wherever.

@@Hazard4Tactical the X-T series (single digit) only interest me for professional shoots because of the battery grip that enhances vertical shooting. Personally not really interested in the double digits X-Ts. Leisure cameras to me are X-Pros and X-Es (well before the 4). Anyways I wonder how well the X-E4 is going to do. Part of me wants it to bomb so they learn a hard lesson but then again if Fuji makes a killing on it then they would maybe give back to the community and give us an actual X-E5? the lack of front or rear grips doesn't bother me, none of my film rangefinders have one. but the lack of weather proofing and removal of the rear wheel are deal breakers at this point (why sell this with a weather proofed lens when the body isn't?) and like the xpro3, I don't feel a 2 megapixel increase in resolution warrants buying a new one. my xe3 is just as good as my xpro2, I don't see that here.

This is the ONLY thing that I don't like about my X-E4. Looking at my X-T30, It's the same design as the ribbon on the X-Txx bodies as far as I can tell, but the LCDs on those cameras don't have the same extended range of mobility that the X-E4 has so they don't leave the ribbon as exposed. I personally put two layers of electrical tape over mine front and back and that SHOULD keep it better protected in use while still allowing the LCD it's full movement, but this was a design flaw.

Ya, I realized I didn't finish my thought, but with a light lens and a strap, you can live without the hand and thumb grip. What you gain is a super compact camera that takes up very little space in your camera bag. Losing the Focus Select dial is a big loss, which is also removed from the X-S10. I have yet to update the X100V but will be testing that next.

Thanks for the review. There are plusses and minuses to me in the new design. One plus, for 5 years now I've continually mashed the Q button on my XP-2 inadvertently. Moving it is a good thing I think I'm usually uncomfortable though with touch screen control so that's worrisome. As regards fewer buttons, since 1957 the mechanics of photography for me have been focus, speed, f stop. ISO (ASA) of course was set before the day began. As long as this camera offers convenience manipulating those 3 it's a tool which will easily become comfortable. Dependent upon the XE-4's pocketability it could hopefully become my "Everything camera" replacing the XP-2, X-70 and RX100.

@bigheadtaco

You only get full stops with the shutter speed dial. To get the in-between speeds (1/3 stops) you need either the front or rear dial. Since the camera only has one front dial, you still need to switch if you want to fine tune your exposure. Like I said, there are workarounds, but it’s just a bit slower and/or less optimal.

I imagine that Lensmate will make a stick on grip for the front of this camera. I had one for an S90 Canon from them. It was solid. As is, this body looks to be about the same ergonomics as my minolta SR-T102 bodies were. (Though they had a film advance as a 'thumb grip' build in.) I ordered my black X-E4 with both the front and the thumb grips anyhow...I have both on my X-PRO3 and my X-E3 and they work well... but a lower profile stick on front grip may be nice too. Personally, I set my Fujis up to be as simple as my film cameras were. I almost always use Auto ISO and Auto WB so I don't switch these out shot to shot manually...and I shoot Aperture Priority. IF the lens has an aperture ring, I use that, otherwise I use the front dial like my Nikons were set up to use with G lenses. I always shoot in RAW and so I don't bother to switch my 'film' profiles around. I like Classic Chrome, but can chose what I want in Lightroom later along with all the other exposure 'HSL' stuff. I leave my Dynamic range and the rest set to my preferences all the time deep in the menus. If I'm shooting with an AF lens, I prefer AF-S using a single point AF in the middle of the screen rather than the fancy AF-C or tracking features. (Just like all my film cameras had....focus from the center and recompose the shot.) If I'm shooting with MF lenses, I'm going to set WHICH lens I'm using up in the menu anyhow...not having the MSC switch on the front doesn't bother as I rarely use it. I'm always hitting the darned Q button accidentally on my X-E3 so having it in a tougher to reach spot is an improvement for me. I use the AEL mostly when shooting a sunset with fill flash. I never focus using 'back button' as I have nearly 20 years of muscle memory using the shutter half press. I would have probably preferred a more standard strap lug, but I can make strap extensions for my Peak Design anchors as I did for my X-A1. IF they don't ship the production models with some protection for the LCD ribbon, we'll almost also certainly see a lot of DIY tutorials pop up showing folks how to best adhere a slim piece of protective plastic for the ribbon. I'll figure something out (even if it's just a few layers of duct tape!) because I WOULD almost certainly break that with my clumsy fingers. This camera is the Fuji I've been hoping and begging for since I switched to Fuji (11 Fuji Bodies ago) in 2014. I was really frustrated when they announced the X-E3 because I don't need a 'touch screen' and liked the 4 way controller rather than the joy stick but wanted it to flip out like this. I initially skipped the X-E3 entirely in protest, but got one used as a trade just a short time ago. I've come to like it, but kept one of my X-E2 bodies. Seriously, I would have been elated with just an X-E2 body with a flip LCD (I liked the popup flash!) and the latest processors, but I think I'm going to like the stripped down body of this X-E4 too. I don't think Fuji made an error. It will likely replace my X-PRO3 as my daily work camera. (which means I'll end up with at least two of them...one in each colour.) On the fly, I need to be able to easily shoot waist level and over head (I shoot Real Estate for a living)...to change my aperture easily and to be able to chimp quickly. IF I want to change my shutter, there is a dial for that. Aperture? There is a dial for that. ISO/WB I let the camera chose within the parameters I find acceptable. Less is more and as long as I can have a menu item for everything else, give me the smallest camera that will hold my XF10-24 and I'm happy. I'm very excited. In the end we're only really 'losing' the rear thumb dial and ONE button on the back...everything else just got moved around. I can live with it I think. Like the weird flip DOWN LCD on the X-PRO3...after a day of shooting, it will likely all be second nature. Thanks for the excellent content as usual Sir.

I got my camera today, but the Body Grip and Thumbrest are still back-ordered until likely near the end of the month. A little experimentation and I found that the Lensmate LM-XE3 Thumbrest that I have for my X-E3 fits the X-E4 perfectly. I'm almost certainly going to sell the X-E3 (though never the X-E2!) so I can use the Thumbrest on the new camera indefinitely. I like the position closer to the middle of the body more than I think I will the Fuji Thumbrest made specifically for the X-E4. I may see about cancelling that part of the back-order. :) I really like a grip when I'm using a larger lens (XF10-24 or XF18-135 for instance) on the smaller body, so I will want something, but at the moment I'm using smaller lenses to get used to the camera and the Lensmate Thumbrest is working great. I also DID put electrical tape on both sides of the otherwise unprotected LCD ribbon. It would probably be FINE as it was, but all exposed like that made me too nervous and electrical tape is not hurting anything otherwise.

Another update...I bought a 'FlipBac' stick on grip for the front of the X-E4 (the model G4) for $14. Cancelled my STILL back ordered Fuji Grip and Thumbrest. Saved $170 camera is lighter, more compact and MUCH more ergonomic. The Lensmate LM-XE3 is listed as 'discontinued' but given that it fits the new camera and that there are bunch of folks rushing to pickup X-E3 bodies not that the price has dropped to $400ish...they should order up another batch. No re-tooling necessary.

Thank you. A very helpful video. I have posted around a bit on various forums on this, as while it is just a camera, a bit of machinery, as a passionate photographer, the X-E series was one of my carry everywhere, almost do everything tool. While this new thing certainly looks like a lovely little camera; for some, it seems a shame to me that simplifying the look (form) has complicated the control (function). I can understand Fuji making this and calling it, say, an X-E40, but an X-E4 it is not. Minimalization by refining lines, reorganisation of controls, and strategic placement of control surfaces and design elements to optimise functionality aesthetically should not be substituted by simply omitting controls and grips. What a shame. I bought into Fuji, firstly with the X-E1, through various other bodies, for the fact that they appeared to understand that the provision of manual external controls, versus menus and screens, was what made the cameras 'simpler'. Now, Fuji's DNA, certainly with the X-E line, seems to have been misplaced. I was considering upgrading from the X-E3, and maybe will have to switch (not seen as an upgrade) to this X-E4 just to have the latest on the internal performance, but I feel it is a sad day for us enthusiasts that were hoping for a WR version of the RF style X-E series, with the internals of the X-T4 and handling of the X100 series... I believe that while the X-E4 may satisfy some, Fuji may have begun to lose the following of many that have been loyal for some time due to them appearing now to divert from what initially brought us to love them... Sorry for the rant.

I have every reason to expect the XE5 to just look like a smartphone... I am disappointed on one hand, but happy on the other with the camera I have, so much so I just bought a spare XE2 body! I have an X-T4 and H1 and I’m thinking about the E4 as an EDC. So if you had the lineup of these 3 cameras which would you take travelling? I realized that depends on what the goal of the trip was, but I’m thinking general vacation.

General vacation with the three you mentioned, I’d take the X-E4. If I was to expand and add the X-Pro3 and X100V, it would be one of those two, but leaning towards the X-Pro3. Compact and light is important for vacation for me. Usually when I take short vacations with my wife to Whistler, I’d take the X100 or GR series camera and a film point and shoot. I like compact.

great honest review - Im reminded that there's plenty of videos these days that use old gear (pro1 , pro2, etc) - so one can reasonably use the X-E3 and get the new 27mm and should in theory be happy. would choose the E4 as well for the flip up screen. would you pick this camera to replace your X100V when streaming? I assume you can still use the USB-C to connect to the computer?

For streaming I prefer the X-T4, it’s a studio camera that stays on my tripod, but I could easily use the X-E4 as well. I think a lot of X-E3 shooters will just keep it and upgrade to the new XF27mm f/2.8 R WR. I don’t think Fujifilm will go back to the X-E3 design though, I think it’s pretty much dead. If they’re going to have 3 mid-tier bodies, they all need to be distinct from each other. This is going to be the minimalist model appealing to hipsters and social media savvy content creators.

The front focus switch can be hard to memorize, and the drive mode dial is hard to use when looking in the EVF on the fly. So it’s probably workable with the buttons, and q-menu enough to get the flip over screen and not have it hanging out the side when shooting from behind the lens. It just should be cheaper then with all the missing dials, buttons and grips. Even the machining is cheaper on this with the boxy look. Someone should make an arca plate with both a front grip and thumb rest coming off it, so it doesn’t block the main top dials, and would be cheaper than Fuji’s.

Sure ergonomics can be subjective and I think we all find workarounds when something doesn’t work for us. I have the same issue with the X-Pro3 as they removed the front dial push-in feature, which made absolutely no sense. As for price, it’s technically $50 cheaper at launch than the X-E3 at launch, but as mentioned, minus dials and buttons and grips.

@@bigheadtaco can you still spin the SS top dial with the thumb rest installed with just the front serrated edge? Or does it prefer to be twisted with thumb and forefinger? It would have been perfect if they’d left the controls of the xe3! Even the IBIS missing is ok as it’s not even close to a good tripod or gimbal for video.

I saw few videos in youtube on why X-E4 is not a good choice as rear dial and front button to shift to manual focus is removed. I was nearly going to get Xt-30 and then X-E4 was announced and then with other videos again firmed up with T-30. Now after seeing your video on how you can use E4 practically, I am again confused. I am looking for second camera which has film like experience (shutter speed dial and other things) and yet also a second camera to Mark iv for covering weddings. But also have a good first camera for street, product shoot and daily use. You can do a video between X-E4 and T30? How do you compare both?
@bigheadtaco

I don't have the X-T30 to compare against, but the bigges difference between the X-T30 and X-E4 is the firmware. They both share the same sensor and processor, but the X-E4 has the latest and great firmware, similar to what's on the X100V, X-T4 and X-S10. Besides those differences, in terms of buttons and dials, the X-T30 is superior in almost every way. In terms of shooting with a film-like experience, the X-T30 shoots like an old compact film SLR while the X-E4 looks like a compact rangefinder. Depending on what your main camera is, I say matching firmware and similar ergos would go a long way jumping between an A and B camera.

@@bigheadtaco Thanks for the reply. I saw a video in which you show T-30 for some seconds and thought you have T-30 now. If sensor and processor is same, does latest firmware make a difference? So I will wait for videos from different channels. After seeing your video, inclination is going more towards Xe-4 (just will miss rear dial and front button to shift to manual focus).
