Thank you everyone for watching this video and for all of the kind comments and constructive advice. I just want to address one concern... the music in the background. As many people have suggested to me, this video would be better than it is if the music were either quieter, or gone entirely. I actually agree. This video would be a stronger production if the music were quieter (or completely gone) in several spots. This was a very early attempt of mine to create an arranging tutorial. I had just purchased my first "real" camera. All in all I think the video is a good effort... but my recent productions are WAY more polished. And the music is quieter in the intro and conclusion. AND the middle of the videos are usually music-free. Unfortunately, there is not good way for me to redo the audio for this video. If you were about to leave a comment suggesting that I turn down that background music. I've heard it loud and clear.... almost as loud as that darn music in the background!

Hey mate. I very useful trick mixing engineers use for music/dialogue is to have a gate in the music channel and have the side chain input from that gate coming from your vox channel. That way whenever you speak the gate ducks out the music. It’s a pretty elegant way of doing it and that means you don’t have to spend hrs doing volume automation.

Hey! And a question for you: Hwne coupling the melody in the saxes using a Closed voicing, how far in terms of extensions in the saxes would you go? It’s Dm7 and let’s say four trumpets play: (high to low) D, a, f, d and I want the lead alto to couple the melody of the second trumpet, so the saxes would be: A, f, e, c, Bb. That suddenly makes the Dm7 into a Dm7b13. Is that too much? Should the saxes be: a, f, e, c, a or even a, f, d, c, d? Suddenly it’s not exactly a closed voicing anymore.. Hope you understand my question!
@PandemoniumBigBand
2 жыл бұрын
You can voice the band however you want. In this video I am presenting what I consider to be a foundational technique. When applying closed voicing to the trumpet section, you should not have a repeated pitch in the section. for Dm, with D as the melody, I would write D, A, G, F (essentially adding an 11), OR I would write D, A, F, E (adding the 9th). The essential principal is to harmonize the 4-voice section within an octave. I hope this helps!

@@PandemoniumBigBand Hi again. Thanks a lot for your reply! Actually, it wasn't the trumpets I was too worried about. It's whether or not to include 9s, 11s and 13s in closed voicings. What do you think about that?

@PandemoniumBigBand

very good explanations BUT you let us hear the tutti trumpets alone,and then went right to the entire Big band.I think it would have been better to hear the trombones alone as harmonized and then with trumpets together.Lastly let us hear the saxes with this voicing and the finally the 'entire' band.I prefer to hear a more 'cumulative' approach.just my opinion but nice job!
@PandemoniumBigBand
3 жыл бұрын
That is a good suggestion. I thought about adding that, but decided to leave it out for time. I often use closed voicing with trumpets and EITHER trombones or saxophones. Then I write the left-over section a counterpoint (unison). When I do this, I'll usually either leave the bari on the roots (with tutti figures), or if the passage is loud enough to warrant it, the bari will play the counterpoint with the saxes in a lower octave. Maybe I'll make a Closed Voicing part 2 to demonstrate this ideas...

The idea of objectionable parallels is to create rich counterpoint with a small number of real parts. The idea is that objectionable parallels are a waste of your voices. This is absolutely true on an organ, the instrument of choice for working out vocal harmonies. If you only have 2 or 3 horns, you might want to try this even in a jazz context for a fuller sound. When you have a big band, however, it wouldn't make much sense to have four real parts that form a complete harmony and then distribute them out to the players. Rather, big band scoring typically relies on counterpoint between opposing groups, which do not have much if any contrapuntal interest inside of them; the interest comes from the groups' interaction, and the rhythm section makes sure it keeps swinging, which forgives more sins than you might imagine.

But if we leave out the b7, it's not a dominant chord any more, it's major. Which "rule" is best to break here?

Here's a suggestion: I think you should start a Patreon page and give an insight into your own creative process, and how you approach these topics I spoke before, plus also some analysis of some of the big band fundamental writters you think must be looked at. Anyways, keep up the amazing work!!

How do you voice things that require you to either be closer than a M3 to the melody OR more than an octave apart? For example: a melody is in the key of C major, the chord is a dominant 7 on G, and the melody is also on G. To get the dominant sound, you of course need an F natural, but this will result in being only a M2 away from the melody, OR if the F is in the lower register, will result in more than an octave from the melody, and I'm guessing disqualifies it from being considered a "close voicing". Do you simply omit the 7th and replace it with a 9th, etc? This would possibly be a solution, but seems to weaken the strength of the voicing. I'm new to this but I'm already seeing several instances where this becomes as issue. Any advice? To my ears, it doesn't sound bad to voice things in this instance a M2 from the melody, but I'd like to learn how the pros do it!

Don’t forget that the rhythm section is playing too. The piano/guitar will fill in the missing tonality. It’s usually better to stick to strict closed voicing if you are going for that “closed voicing” sound.

@@PandemoniumBigBand Thanks for the quick reply! That makes sense; however, I'm currently writing a brass quintet-- what should I use in that instance when there are no other instruments to fill in the cracks?

There is a consequence to fudging the voicing. A small interval at the top makes the 2nd part difficult to tune. And moving the lower part below an octave makes it a bit unpredictable. But I recommend you experiment. Occasionally it’s more important to break the voicing than to omit chord tones.

These tutorials for big band writing are fantastic! What "secrets" might you share for tutti voicing of seven horns as in a little big band(A,T,B -2 trp. - 2 trbn.)? Thanks for all your work in passing on your expertise!

My newest video “tessitura”, is a good start to explaining how I tackle smaller section orchestration. The most important thing is to be aware of your instrument ranges AND how the instruments behave in various partials.

Traditionally the term for voicing within an octave is "close" as in close to each other [not "closed"]. It seems like the terms should be "open" & "closed," but the terms are typically "open" & "close"
@PandemoniumBigBand

Technically, closed voicing implies that the voices are written within an octave. That is a term that is used in both Sammy Nestico’s and Don Sebesky’s books.

@@PandemoniumBigBand And do you avoid doubling, which would mean that by definition at least one of your voices will not be on a note of the chord triad? Or would sometimes all 4 voices be on a note of the chord triad?
@PandemoniumBigBand

@@stephenrothman6058 avoid doubling within the 4-voice section. In jazz you should be using chords with 4 or more notes (C9 has 5 notes).
