Coming from a 63 year old woman, I would highly recommend everyone think twice before throwing out your good quality items. I’ve recently pulled out some of my 30 year old things which are so in style these days and I’m thankful I saved them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve discarded a item only to regret it in a year or so. If it’s good quality it will be hard for you to replace it in the future, things are getting cheaply made and the costs are going up.
@marilyndoering2501

I totally agree, and I’m also in mid 60’s. Firstly, those classic pieces don’t age and often come back into style. Secondly, the quality of these vintage pieces is often so much better than what you can find today. And lastly, if you some wonderful statement pieces, hold onto them to add some pizzaz to an otherwise basic outfit. Quality items are worth holding onto in my opinion! And my Mom, my daughter and I often end up passing these classic or one of a kind pieces to each other so that they continue to get worn and enjoyed!

A small piece of advise, do store your bags stuffed out so they retain their shape better. You made plenty of progress. If in doubt, store it. I have regretted so much I have discarded. I am not a hoarder but I do miss and think about some of the things I’ve given away or sold.

I am a bit older than you, and I, too, agree. Times, sizes, situations change over the years. I do regret getting rid of some fabulous suits, bags and shoes. Think well labeled, and well protected long term storage. Sometimes the fabric alone is difficult to replace, and things can be restyled. If it is a completely out of character purchase, that is another matter.

I enjoyed hearing you talk through your thoughts, too! I think it's also wise to make informed decisions about which pieces are useful place holders for something that will work better (like the booties). It prevents rushing into decisions and settling...I'm patiently biding my time until I can make more dresses (my preference), as my schedule allows. In the meantime, I wear the dresses I have and skirt/jeans + blouse combos...I plan to phase out some separates in the future. Thanks for the great videos!

I had 4 pairs of slingback, pointed-toe pumps. I had a pair in each grey, black, chocolate brown & white. I absolutely loved them, but, after I fell & shattered part of my ankle 'I thought', which was my first mistake, that I'd never wear heels again, so I donated them to goodwill... That was 2020, I spent the pandemic shutdown recovering from ankle surgery. Late summer/early fall of this year I discovered that my ankle had healed enough that now I CAN wear heels again & now I'm kicking myself for getting rid of those shoes... I did hold back some of the 'special ones', along with buying some new ones to replace what I donated but I so miss those original four pairs.

Vertical bags are so hard to deal with. Everything of course falls to the bottom and if you live in New York City, you have to carry everything around with you as you can’t just throw things in the passenger seat of your car or trunk. So you have to be strategic with your cargo. Horizontal bags make everything easily accessible, so unless you are carrying water bottles and who does that anymore, you don’t need the vertical bag even though it may be so cute. in NYC we also have a severe shortage of space, especially closets, in many of these prewar apartments so we often have to bite the bullet and jettison cute but less functional items

I tend to hang onto my high-quality leather belts, I like having my basic-color options (navy, burgundy/cordovan, khaki, etc.) as well as neutral ones, they’re fairly expensive (no plastic for me) and they don’t take up a lot of space. I wear a lot of dresses and often want to wear a “matching” belt, which draw less attention to my not-very-defined waist than contrasting-colored ones do. Leather belts are harder to find and more expensive than ever. I usually buy classic-width ones, 1.25 to 1.75 inches wide. I don’t wear the narrower or wider ones as much as they tend to look more trendy than classic-width ones. For example, narrow belts were completely “out” in the 60-70s, but wide ones were completely “out” in the 80s, cycles which keep repeating, to keep us spending! I have a tan braided leather belt, about 1.5” wide, that I have worn for over 40 years! I recommend sizing up a size in belts, one’s waist will thicken as the years go by. More holes can easily be added if a belt is slightly too large, and I like wrapping the ends through a longer belt, too.

Very Inspiring. . I must to do a big declutter as I enter into a new phase of my life. The first thing is identifying my specific style and presently that is next to impossible as I have been unwell for the past several years ( Not Covid related) and I purchased what I refer to as my ' Recovery Wear" .. but it's primarily easy to take care of lounge wear ( er mostly men's pj's & oversized sweatshirts/sweaters.. the opposite of elegant but necessary for ease and comfort) I wouldn't go out in the ' Recovery Wear, but living with Comfort has become essential, I find I reach for plush, soft and relaxed items. I don't like stiff cotton or too fitted or structured anything except in handbags..) This will be an interesting journey for me. Thank you Alyssa for such excellent slow fashion content in a shopaholic world.

I let go of my almost identical espadrilles... maybe a year and a half ago? I think I actually bought them (secondhand) bc of you 🙈🙈 But came to the same conclusion! The heel and the wrap made them too fussy and ladylike for a casual shoe. And the fabric is too casual for formal wear. Always felt wrong. Maybe a flat version, but I prefer a strappy sandal at the end of the day. Also generally letting go of all semi-casual shoes with heels (like your navy heels), with the exception of boots. I will always opt for the flat option for casual/casualish wear.

I’ve never been able to wear heels 3” or higher. I finally gave up and look for about 2.5” ones, maximum. I love the extra height, but not enough to be tortured for it, either. Where I live I haven’t actually seen a single woman wearing high or stiletto heels for decades, they are considered pretentious, silly and ridiculous. They same for pointed toes, I just can’t get my toes into them, “leg elongating”, “flattering” or not. They are other ways to achieve these goals with shoes: nude colors, color matching to hosiery and bottoms, almond toes, low vamps and avoiding ankle straps, just to name a few🙂

I lived out of a backpack for 7 months of traveling, and I agree - you get so much wardrobe clarity from spending several seasons on the road without a closet and limited access to laundry. It helped me come to similar conclusions ("let's face it, I'm not a princess" 😍). It's liberating to let go of pieces that we chose to fit an image not anchored in reality. It's hard enough to let go of those dream aspirations, but harder still to find a home for the pieces we've acquired in a fog of lofty illusions. THANK YOU for sharing that next step... For certain decisions it was clear you came into this exercise with one idea, and were willing to discard it as you talked through your style words and practical experience...I love that you re-sell on consignment/Poshmark, resole shoes, upgrade straps...to make these items attractive and useful for their next home. Well done! Navy might be one of your colors, but it wasn't a big winner during your accessories declutter 😜 that's a great lesson too.

It's been VERY sad for me to give up my high spikey heels...but my knees just can't do it anymore. I've found that chunky mid-height heels are perfect, and still give me a little height. I seek out ones where I don't feel as though I'm giving up style for function. And I get mad at myself for spending $$ on things that I really PICTURED myself wearing, but they're honestly not me...I'm trying to be better about that, but it's hard sometimes! My wardrobe is ridiculously large, but I'm working hard to WEAR things or get rid of them (sell or donate). Fewer items (and this is a relative/subjective term) also make it easier to SEE what you have, and therefor remember to wear items!

Good video! It is interesting that you are not keeping the 'structured' brown purse... When I first saw it in one of your videos, it felt like it was not quite your style. I did not know it was from a second-hand store (not that there is anything wrong with that). I am guessing you purchased it in Portugal because you needed a purse? After watching your European videos during the summer, I researched similar purses but decided against ordering as they were too small and too expensive - not a good value for price IMHO. And it was very comforting to hear you say today that the purse was too small to suit your needs. 🙂 Good luck with whatever you decide to do next, Alyssa! You are awesome.

Cannot believe you are bagging the red bag! It always brings such a beautiful pop to your outfits! Though it clearly is odd girl out in the company of the rest of your bags, but still. I feel sad. or to another point you made, I find myself keeping something that looks great on me, even if it does not go with my three words. Feeling inspired. Going to shred my closet!

Agree skinny belts are a non-sequiter. Your strength in phase one is reevaluating vs decluttering. LOL. Phase 2 had me rolling on the floor; recognized myself 😮

How about the clothes or the accessories that you love but remind you of a difficult period of your life ?...😔🌧

Wow! Tough declutter but you did it. I totally empathize with keeping things that you love just because you love them and not necessarily because they're practical or necessary. A game changer for me was from Christina who talks about decluttering things that are just not chosen. Your struggle with the espadrilles reminded me of that. For me personally I allow myself to keep things that I only wear a handful of times each year and are rarely chosen as long as I have space for them. But if a whole season goes by and it was never chosen, I let it go.

I love what you said about something being beautiful creating a sense of obligation to keep it, even if it doesn't look beautiful when worn. That struck home!

Decluttering happens in stages! I think there is so much pressure to get rid of everything at once, but there are so many emotions tied up with the things that we own and love, even those that no longer serve us, that it is better to let them go at a slower pace. Thanks for walking us through your process!

YES! So well said. I usually edit many times over the course of the year and will continue to do so. I prefer the consistency in small bites method but wanted to really dig in after travel!

@jennifercollins2592 I absolutely agree. For me, It truly is emotionally heavy to part with my items. I am in the process of decluttering my shoes from 65 pairs to about 25-30. I tried to do it in one go and I just couldn’t. I felt so emotionally drained during the process. I only managed to do 7 pairs 1 week and another 6 pairs the following week. I will try another 6 pairs soon. I need to sit on someone’s couch and talk about why I can’t get rid of stuff.

Yea , I am guilty of getting things based a list of must haves. And I am almost 60! Really enjoyed your video. I will definitely be more careful when I reevaluate my closet. Thanks so much for such an honest video ❤

I'm curious, is your overarching goal to have less to choose from to make life simpler? Or perhaps to put your lesser used items in circulation to be brtter used by someone else? I have some things that I don't wear often but then I think that I will enjoy having the option of having more choices in my wardrobe so I don't get bored. What would you see as the pros and cons of that approach?

This is a great q! A bit of both ... While I LOVE getting dressed and styling myself, I love to sleep, work out, have coffee with friends, work, and live my life etc more ... So the less time I spend worrying if my outfit looks good, the better. That doesn't mean that I don't love putting outfits together (it's also a fave part of my day), it just means that the process is less stressful because I have eliminated the paradox of choice, without sacrificing my self expression BC I still feel styled and put together. BUT - when I do want to get creative and I feel I'm getting bored, personally, I have found that having a smaller closet with less choice is a challenge for me to get more creative with styling, and more focused with adding. Which for me, feels more rewarding in the long run. The biggest con (in my opinion) is that it is less flexible and reactive to lifestyle changes. A changing body, new jobs ... We all want to feel secure, and knowing we have clothes that suit us in every way can be a form of stability. So a larger closet is a better support for lifestyles that are highly changeable. Sorry for the essay lol loved thinking of this answer, thank you for such a great q Kathy!

Loved this! I definitely feel you on keeping things bc they are beautiful. So good you know yourself. I actually re-gifted some jewelry I was given and holding onto bc my aunt whom I adore gave it to me.

I love wearing my Castaner Espadrilles with slightly loose fit jeans and floaty skirts that are just below the kneecap or maxi length. I wanted a pair for quite awhile before I purchased them and they quickly became my most worn summer heels.

I loved this , I struggle so much with decluttering and what I need to keep I honestly have a whole room dedicated to my clothes , i did declutter once but I repurchased second hand , this is a struggle finding myself . I would love to see a belt video showing the uses for the ones you kept maybe it will help me , thank you .

This inspired me and I might do some decluttering tomorrow. I was sad about your brown purse...I just found a very similar one in black (thrift) and ordered a shoulder strap for it and I love the structured look. I was looking for one like your brown one because I have so much black, but nothing found yet. I enjoyed hearing your process. This was fun, thank you!

I love watching decluttering videos. Just helps me every time I wear something and it doesn't feel right for me. Easy peasy right to the donation box! Two days ago I wore a pair of black boots ... ok in a bit of snow, in great shape but I'm loving my Blundstones much more.
