Thanks! Glad to help! You don't need two hot cycles. Maybe listen to this part of the video again... First, a cold/rinse spin; then the hot wash with diaper safe detergent, which has it's own cold rinse afterward; and lastly an additional cold rinse/spin.

I wouldn't worry about wiping your washing machine down. All Free and Clear is considered "okay" to use on cloth diapers. It's not the best, but certainly not terrible like other brands are. You certainly do not need to strip your diapers after one wash in this detergent. Just go forward from here with a better one. I might recommend Charlies at first as this is a good stripping detergent and then alternate with something else like Planet.

@jenanderichomaha It's true that many biodegradable detergents don't clean as well as petroleum based detergents. But, have you tried Charlies and Planet? They are both quite good. With Tide, perhaps do a cleansing load before you wash diapers for the first time and then periodically after that. You could also just wipe down your machine with vinegar every now and then, but I wouldn't go to the trouble or waste of running an empty wash cycle before every diaper load.

I do too. Just a little needed. I'm thinking that it could be a detergent in and of itself.

I'm new to cloth diapering and about to welcome by first little one into this world. Love your videos and they have been very informative. A friend suggested using coconut oil for rashes. Do you know if this will effect the absorbency of my cloth diapers?

Some feel that non-petroleum oils are safe to use on cloth diapers, but in my experience all oils can affect the absorbency of your diapers. I would recommend liners while using oils.

I am looking for the Bac Out and I am finding a few different versions of the product. Which do I buy? I found a lavender/lime bathroom cleaner, floor cleaner, foaming cleaner and fabric re-freshener. Which do I buy?

#JaimeeGleisner thanks for your help. What about hand washing?
@JaimeeGleisner

In the olden days, cloth diapers were hand washed and this is an option, but would be a LOT of work. I am hesitant to recommend something that would be so labor intensive as it could deter you from cloth diapering altogether. I think without the spin cycle and rigorous wash cycles of a machine, you would likely need to pay more attention to sanitizing with soaking in enzymes or bleach (if you're comfortable with that).

NO NO NO AND JUST NO!! please do not listen to this part of the series! I'm part of a large cloth diapering group and we do NOT recommend cd "safe" detergent nor do we recommend home made detergent! It is very very weak and does not contain the proper ingredients to clean human waste! If the dipes don't get cleaned properly it can lead to ammonia burn and severe rashes. Tons and tons of moms have the most success with tide. The whole "detergent build up" thing is a myth. Please join some groups and do more advanced research.

Hi Jessica, as you'll notice I do not actually recommend making your own detergent either. I have never had good luck with that nor heard of others having particularly good luck with that while cloth diapering- tends to lead to grey diapers. However, I do stand by using cloth diaper safe detergents as do many, many cloth diapering retailers and informational websites. I have seen first hand how using a non-safe detergent can lead to diaper stink and repelling. I have also had detergent build up on my own diapers and had to strip them vigorously to get rid of it. This is not a myth and something parents should be aware of. I have been a part of many natural parenting and cloth diapering groups over the past 8 years, read many things, taught at three different stores in three different states, talked to many different people first hand, experienced many things myself, and tried many things to solve problems I encountered along the way as I exclusively cloth diapered all three of my children. I'd say that's some advanced "research." What works for one person may not work for another and I always think it is best to make solid recommendations and parents can go from there with their own research and experimenting.

I think that this is an important opposing viewpoint to note for the many prospective cloth diaper-ers who will be watching this excellent series of videos. I have to agree with the previous reviewer. I understand that some families experience problems with sensitive skin and mainstream detergents, but I've also spoken with many families who have experienced serious stink issues while using just small amounts of "CD safe" detergents as you have recommended. I have been using Tide for five months now and have not experienced any issues. While some diaper companies do recommend these special "detergents" (which they manufacture), many other big-name brands (Fuzzibunz, GroVia, Best Bottoms, Rumparooz.....) recommend mainstream detergents like Tide (as long as they do not contain fabric softeners, which I think we can all agree cause repelling issues). The blog below lists links to many diaper companies' recommended mainstream detergents. cgmrb.blogspot.com/2013/10/cloth-diaper-washing-myth-busters.html?m=1

What would you use apart from tide. Sever skin allergies to most detergents. All free and clear or all baby doesn't cause rashes.

@jenanderichomaha I know CDers that use conventional detergents on regular clothes and a safer detergent on their diapers. But there is a small risk that your machine will have residue that could potentially build up on your diapers. Is there a special reason you'd like to continue using Tide instead of switching the entire family over to an environmentally friendly detergent? If so, consider switching to Tide Free and Clear, which has less additives to worry about.
@JaimeeGleisner

@jenanderichomaha Excellent questions! As long as you do not use petroleum containing products in your wipe solution, there is no risk putting your wipes in with your diapers. You can use a wipe warmer, but I personally do not prefer it nor did I ever have an issue with the wipes being too cold. I like having part of the wipe wet and part dry so that I can clean and then pat dry with the same wipe. But each to their own! :)

I have tried many as well... Allen's, Charlies, Rockin' Green, too many to mention and have found Planet to be superior. Next time your detergent runs out, maybe consider trying one more? For the environment? :) Build up can be a much bigger problem for some than others depending on their machine and their child's skin, so it is important for new cloth diaperers to experiment.

While Tide is considered "okay" for cloth diapers I would not personally recommend it and adding too much detergent will absolutely cause build up at some point, especially with HE washers. Everyone needs to do their own experimenting, however, and my ultimate goal here is to encourage others to cloth diaper. If Tide makes that easier, then that's great, but have you tried Planet?

Yay for switching! I'm very happy to have helped! :) Yes, you can use your home made laundry soap as long as the laundry bar does not contain ingredients like castile soap as this is not good for cloth. Wipe solution is not necessary and perhaps not preferable if your baby has very sensitive skin. But a slightly slippery solution (from soap and/or aloe) makes wiping easier and essential oils help to disinfect and make the diaper area smell fresh.

I believe all BioKleen products are concentrated to some extent, but Bac Out is generally used at full strength- no dilution necessary. This means only a small amount is needed to be effective. For larger odor removing projects like soaking the diaper pail or soaking an entire load of laundry, you can dilute 1/4 cup to 1 gallon of water.
@JaimeeGleisner

It's the stain and odor remover... the one in the green bottle. It might come in a 32 oz spray bottle, 32 oz non spray bottle, or gallon bottle. Unless you have an empty spray bottle at home, you want the spray bottle version, then you can refill it with the others as desired.

I haven't tried planet, but I have tried so many others, that my hubby won't let me try anything else lol! I can't afford to keep buying detergent that doesn't work, when my Tide works great. Cloth diaper users are always going to have build-up at some point, whether it's from Tide, or a CD safe detergent. But I known tons of people who have used Tide for over a year without any problems. I personally would rather have clean diapers than worry about buildup haha! :)

I'm a member of a large cloth diapering board and the favorite detergent among most of us of original Tide powder. It's definitely not the most all natural detergent, but it's the only one that cleans my diapers really well. I have tried several "cloth diaper" safe detergents and none of them clean my diapers as well as Tide, and they sure as crap don't clean them with only 1-2 tbsp lol! Regular detergent isn't going to ruin your diapers, and you can use as much as you need to get them clean

I can't thank you enough for sharing your expertise for all the confused. You are organized and concise and your delivery is impeccable. The amount of time it takes to watch your videos was all I needed to make an immediate switch for my 6 week old. I'm relieved I found you when I did. Questions: Can I use my homemade laundry soap (borax, washing soda, laundry bar)? Also, how necessary is a wipes solution? Can water alone clean enough? Again, you are a beacon of hope and much appreciated!!

Thank you for these videos!! You are so well-researched and well-spoken, which helps me be confident about going cloth. My washing machine doesn't have Hot/Hot, just Hot/Cold. I do have a second rinse option though. If I use that in both washings will it compensate for not having a second Hot cycle?

We use Tide. In our hard water no amount of "cloth safe detergent" (Planet included) was able to get the bacteria out. Our diapers smelled fresh off poo right out of the washer. I talked to a lady with RnG and she sent me a water testing strip that indicated VERY VERY hard water. I was advised to try Calgon with my washes. But we still had bacteria and stink. So as much as I want to be green, we use Tide. No rashes now and my diapers finally smell clean too.

How do you know the bacteria is not out? Do you dry your cloth diapers in the sun?
