MAY NOT BE HELPFUL, but when I told my ma my want to start cloth diapering, and I said how much they were(like $20 for 6 COVERS, not even inserts) she told me how she would fold up hand towels and safety on them on me. I hope you can get some, everything for covering butts is expensive cloth or disposable, but disposable is atrocious on the wallet. I don't know if I was any help, I doubt it, but in a pinch or in a bad scenarios find something thick and safety pins.

some regions may not have had the same access to products or they were cost prohibitive to most in the area so the stores may not have carried them the same as we had. remember there are places in the way out that are very different than where you live. before the internet you could only get what you stores had , catalogs or the tv 800 numbers. just be reminded that some places in 35/40 years ago were still the boon docks. in the late 70's a new family moved to town and the had never had refrigerated milk. they had only ever had evaporated milk in the cans. watched the open the can with one of the openers that made a triangle, pour out milk into a bowl of oatmeal and then add tap water. it blew my mind. they just didn't have "regular" milk where they were from.

I bought SO much, it was unnecessary, I gave half of them to my cousins when their baby was born, and still have so many. I made the mistake of buying newborn diapers, which I would recommend a few of them if you can afford them, just because babies are so small at first and in my experience, the diapers swimmed on her the first month or so, but they aren't necessary if you have a bigger baby!

My six month old is cloth diapered and she has had maybe one or two rashes and they cleared up fast, too. I mostly use the pocket style and right now I like to padfold a flour sack towel and use that as my insert inside the pocket. I also use 5 layer charcoal bamboo, but am sometimes having leaks with those after doing research I wouldn't recommend 5 layer charcoal bamboo inserts and instead would recommend some sort of cotton to anyone new.

Okay I had to come back for an additional comment. The stink and yellow color you complained about….well we didn’t do it like you back in the day. We rinsed in the toilet first and then put it to soak in borax water in a diaper pale and then dumped the water, wrung out and finally washed. I had an additional rinse in the babies bath water that I figured out myself after washing the babies. We didn’t just throw a bunch of dirty diapers straight into the washer and add an extra rinse.

Hi Kelly, just rewatching this because my husband and I are hoping for baby #3 soon and I am wanting to cloth diaper for the first time. I have some questions to clarify with you if you have the time. I am wondering, if I were to stick with the blueberry covers (since they seem to be the favourite?) with the cotton prefolds and the fleece liners, instead of trying out multiple brands, how many of each of those items would you recommend having on hand? Also, where there are so many sizes for cotton prefolds, and you said you'd like to have 24 of them, would you be getting 24 of each size as the baby grows? Lastly, I see that there's a newborn size and a one size blueberry diaper cover, would you recommend getting a certain amount of the newborn ones in the beginning as well? And then just using the cotton prefold the way you showed, with the snappy thing and a newborn cover over it? Would you still put the fleece liner into the cotton prefold that way? Thank you for taking the time to read! Love your videos 💗
@KellysKorner08
4 жыл бұрын
Sure! So if you go with covers and prefolds, I would recommend having 4-6 on hand, however, I've heard other mamas say they are more comfortable having 6-8 on hand. It depends on your baby and how often they have a blowout lol. And yes, for the prefolds, you would size up and buy new ones as baby grows. To be honest, I think I only had to size up once or twice with my son. My daughter is now 9 months old and shes still wearing the same size that she was wearing at the time this video was made. She was about 4 months old. So I don't think you will be having to size up every month or anything crazy like that. As far as the newborn size covers go, you could buy them and get a better fit, but just keep in mind they are only that tiny for a short amount of time and probably wont wear those newborn covers for very long. The one size covers tend to be a little big on newborns but again the length of time they are that small is so short. So if it were me, I would save my money on the newborn covers and go straight to the one size. And yes, you always, always, wanna put a fleece liner down between their skin and the cotton prefold so that they don't get a rash :) I hope this helps you! Thank you for watching my videos!

I’m an old momma and now grandma and my niece is talking about cloth as soon as she gets a washer so I was curious if I could find a video for her. Yes cloth diapers have always been expensive to obtain but they are an investment but there is something no one told me about in my younger years that I wish I had known….just go thrift shopping and buy a bunch of old t-shirts to fold into diapers. You won’t even need filler diapers but you will need rubber pants. Like if I had it to do again I promise you I would save myself a lot more money by investing $0.25 each for a bunch of old t-shirts. And I line dry to this day so I would just hang them straight up onto hangers, wet and allow 4 inches between shirts to air dry.

Hi Kelly thank you for the cloth diaper training video. My son and daughter-in-law expecting baby boy in April and she has stocked up on cloth diapers. Back in my day LOL I use cloth diapers on my kids too cuz my first son had reactions to disposable diapers back then and those days they put a stent in it and I think that's what Prodigy skin. Being the fact that all the shelves in stores have no cloth diapers call Stivers at the best way to go. It'll take me a couple times practice. Back in the olden days we had to use pins which I hated. So one side Master this when I babysit I will be fully knowledge on today's modern day diapers LOL thank you so much for sharing this it was perfect timing I sure will be here around April 11th but I'm his dad's birthday if we're lucky LOL have a blessed day.

So are you saying that you throw a whole poop diaper inside the washer? As long as she’s younger than five months old you can just throw a whole poopy diaper in there? You don’t take out the poop before you put it in the washer? And when she poops become more solid would you still be removing the poop as much as you can from the diapers and then throwing them in the washer and letting the washing machine clean out whatever poop is left in there?
@LeslieKaster-j5h

Woahhhh cloth diapers have come a long way since i used them in early 90s! Back then it was still only prefolds and diaper pins, and a basic plastic diaper cover. Needless to say it was not a very nice thing. The elastic on the cover was raw and irritated the skin, the plastic would get wet and sweaty and wear out, it was all big and bulky and generally gross. We had probably at least 40 prefolds, and at least a couple dozen plastic covers. There were also disposable "liners" you put in them that looked more like dryer sheets than anything else. And diaper pins...now that takes skill! Todays new parents would be horrified at the old cloth diapering.

hint for others. dil sends me the ugly and tattered one. i have larger wounds on my legs from having had a skin graft after necrotizing fasciitis. they never really heal. i have hypersensitive skin. i can't have rubber, nylon, latex, plastic of any kind. so cotton is it. my surgeon is the one who told me to this. i use them like an abd(thick large bandage that are expensive). and a large recieving blanket as a wrap to hold the diaper bandages on and keep the ace wraps from touching my skin. plus they are so much cheaper than disposable bandages and i never run out. they can be disinfected and sanitized. ny wound care doctors and nurses have made the suggestions to other patients that are on long term wound care.. diabetics, amputees with prosthetics. ect. so many ppl have longer term wound care needs and these are great!!

I totally understand why someone wouldn't cloth diaper - not everyone has access to a washing machine, cleaning by hand or in the laundromat would be so hard. Often daycares require disposable diapers too. But I know I had rashes so bad as a baby, even as an adult my skin would be irritated by disposable pads. If the kid has my genes, cloth might save everyone a lot of pain.

I cloth diaper during the day and use a disposable at night or when we are out of the house. I have 2 in diapers and save so much money like this!!!

Very good video. It should help people who can’t get the disposables.

So you don’t take the inside of the diaper to wash? Like separate them? Also if they pee and you spray and use again how does that look? Idk if you mentioned it in this video but I know I heard it I just have seen so many videos at this point

Do you have to wash pocket diapers different from covers? Prep them or sanitize differently.
@KellysKorner08

Nope same! Just remove the insert from the pocket diaper before you put them in the wet bag or pail

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to buy. You showed liners, that blanket and the diaper. So I need those 3 things? I’m a bit confused.

If you want to go the route I did, you will need diaper covers (I recommend 4-5), some prefolds that go into the covers (this is your absorbency and I recommend a dozen of those, 2 dozen is better, but you can get by with one.) and you will also need some fleece liners. This will wick away moisture from your babies skin. So 3 things...diaper covers, prefolds, and fleece liners. Hope this helps!

I'm expecting my first baby in July - this video was SUPER helpful because I really think I want to go the cloth diaper route. Do you have any updates on how it's gone for you since your little one switched to baby food?

I clothed with my first, ten years ago. She was born 16 weeks early and her skin was so sensitive, any disposable I tried on her skin immediately rashed. I loved cloth diapering. It took some getting used to at first but was well worth it and was easy to get into a routine with them. I used all kinds of different brands. I loved them all. They are so soft and cute. My daughter loved them as well. 😊
