This is just more of a summary video.

We were having issues with our front loading clothes washer not draining properly. The washer would stop in the middle of a cycle and display the error message F9E1, which the owner’s manual describes as a "drain pump system error". I was ready to just get rid of the machine and get a top loader this time, but I decided to look into the draining system before forking out another $700 bucks for a new machine.
What I found is that before the waste water gets to the water pump, which then pumps the waste water out the hose (of course), there is a filter that prevents large debris from getting to the water pump - which could result in serious damage to the pump. It's really a great design overall. The only problem is that it's a b**** to get to.
The manufacturer (and I would expect this to apply to other makes of front loading clothes washers besides Whirlpool) put the filter and the pump at the FRONT of the washer and the only way to get to it is to remove the back panel, the top panel, the control panel, then remove the gasket (that loops around the door) from the front panel so that you can then take off the front panel and have full access to the drain filter. (Come to think of it, I wonder if the Federal government was involved in designing the layout of the mechanisms.)
This drain filter and waste water pump could have been put in the back of the washer, so that all you would have to do is remove the back panel to get to it. Removing and cleaning the filter itself, albeit a rather rancid task, was not difficult at all. If you can change a light bulb, clean the lint filter on your dryer, clean the toilet, hand wash dishes, or do any other mundane cleaning task in your house you can clean the drain filter on your washer - if you can get to it.
In this video I cut to the chase, skip all the disassembly stuff, and get to the point that I think you are looking for. Your clothes washer has stopped working. The clothes washer is not draining all the way. You have a pool of water left in the washer after a load of wash is done. Your cloths and towels come out of the washer sopping wet still after a full cycle. You want to know how to make these things go away, get your front loading clothes washer working normally again, and restore peace and harmony to the Department of Domestic Affairs. I can honestly tell you that ALL of these were symptoms that I was having with my clothes washer and they ALL went away immediately after I cleaned the drain filter. My wife couldn't be happier! (Well, insofar as doing laundry is concerned anyway.)
I had an afterthought (isn't it nice when you think of these things AFTER the fact?) that I should have either moved the filter and pump to the rear of the washer, or, easier yet, cut a hole in the front panel, so that I can easily access the filter and check/clean it on a regular basis. Sure that would not look pretty, but what the heck? It's just a clothes washer sitting in the basement. It's not a piece of furniture in my living room. I may still yet cut that hole in the front panel and put some sort of a door on it.
I will post a Part Two soon. Part Two will include the steps of disassembly, reassembly, and other parts to the washer that I decided to clean while I had it all apart. I have all the footage and am already on task to editing it. The most frustrating part of process is in reassembly - getting that door gasket back onto the front panel. If you're not accustomed to doing such things it can be challenging and might even be a source of a little ... "backsliding". Just keep your favorite beverage nearby. It's going to be okay.
Thanks for watching! I hope you find this video helpful. Fixing this clothes washer and filming the video of the process is how I spent my birthday.
