I'm an older guy, (67) and I agree with much of what he says. Tailored, well fitting clothing always looks better than baggy, loose pants and shirts. However, I hate this trend nowadays of guys wearing "overly fitted" suits. When you see newscasters, tv hosts, sports commentators wearing suits that look like they're 2 sizes too small and form-fitting dress pants that are 2 inches too short, it looks ridiculous in my opinion.

For me, discovering New Balance 20ish years ago changed my comfort level up about 5 notches. Enough firm padding, arch not too high or too unsupported, a pretty flat sole not shaped like a canoe, but not a plank either. I can go 2 miles in 30 minutes in them. I don't care if white with logo isn't in fashion. And I still wear the same size shirts and pants as I did when I was 30. But the trouble is, my wardrobe is predictable. I still want to go back to a hawaiian shirt and blue spiky hair. But at 75, that's just too odd. But at least it's not a bar rat look.

Wranglers with a button down shirt, Dan Post boots and a Stetson. I agree with a snug fit on shirts but slim fit pants are not for me. Tennis shoes I wear to the gym and thats the only time I wear them. I never wear loafers and dress shoes are a thing of the past for me. When I wear a suit I wear dress boots. Shirt-stays are totally unnecessary if you get your pants off of your hips and have them at the natural waist. Not to mention that it looks way better. This guy’s whole style is built on wearing his pants too low. It forces all of his other rules like shirt fit all the way down to leg openings.

@@notyoungnotold3730 Billowy shirts are unflattering regardless of the rise of the trousers. But shirt stays can address that issue by applying a constant downward force ie a perpetual exertion of a tucking action onto the shirt, resulting in a more streamlined silhouette.
@RobertJonesWightpaint
Жыл бұрын
@@tuberific454 I might want a streamlined silhouette if I were a torpedo, or possibly a sea-lion. Being neither, I don't want to look as though someone has painted clothes on my body - you probably look absolutely fine in your choice of clothes, but I just wouldn't. Shirt stays are pointless if you wear genuinely waist-fitting trousers: braces/suspenders also help, and render shirt-tucking totally unnecessary.
@EricJJones
4 ай бұрын
That is because your shirt doesn't fit. If your shirt fits, you can have it stay down. Plus your trousers as someone stated below aren't fitting correctly, because they wouldn't let your shirt move much. Also, your undershirt and the placement of your undershirt matters. The undershirt inside your underwear helps your shirt stay down. All should fit and drape naturally. The only stays you should have are collar stays.

I am afraid that I am going to have to dissent from a few things that you said in the video. First, boat shoes are definitely not something that you have to give up if you are over 40. When I was in my twenties (and I’m 65 now) I remember seeing very distinguished gentleman wearing a polo shirt, navy blazer, chinos and boat shoes. In my opinion, the look was timeless. The key, however, is to have a good looking pair of boat shoes, not the pair that you bought ten years ago. The other thing that I will disagree with is pleated pants. In the photo you posted, the biggest issue is the length of the pants, not the pleats. Fix that, and you have a fine fit. Finally, you fall into the trap of thinking that clothes need to be form fitting to look nice. I can’t tell you how many times that I’ve seen younger guys, with athletic builds even, go for the slimmest fit possible. The end result is a hideous look where fabric is bunched at every joint. The classic look is a clean drape from the top of the garment to the bottom. That is best achieved by giving some room to move in the garment, and not hugging too closely to the body. Obviously, gentleman who have extra pounds are at a disadvantage. But the most important thing that they can do to improve the lines between shirts and pants is to wear suspenders instead of a belt. The pants hang better and the shirts drape better with that simple change. Of course, that encourages the wearing of sports coats and blazers to hide the suspenders. But surprise! As an older guy, you can pull that off easily.

as a 76 year old male, the one thing i learnt in life is that if people think my clothes are out of style i dont care, i dress the way it suits me and i wear what i am comfortable in and if someone doesnt like it too bad, i see tooooooooooo many fashion people that look so out of place i laugh, fashion styles are created to make money for stores bottom line. as for looing younger, it is what it is, your looks make you look younger not your clothes, you only look like neater by being in style not younger. if you look at older women, most dress for what suits them and those that want the latest styles look out of place.

To my mind, the critical aspect with boat shoes is the color of the sole. If it is white or neutral then more appropriate for boat or brach or tropical place. If the colour is dark / similar to the top of the shoe then it can be more anywhere and this being especially if the laces are also a dark.

Totally agree with everything. Boat shoes are your dad's shoes. Driving mocs are much better (last photo about casual loafers from Tod's, the best and most elegant driving shoes in my opinion). Pleated pants it's a big no, something from the 90's or 2000. Even if there is a comeback, I will never wear pleated pants again. Shirts too large, or oversized. It's something from the past and it doesn't fit you. I still have a few shirts from Polo RL classic fit (good quality, they last forever), but I only wear them on weekends under a sweater. There is a trend about oversize clothing, but in my opinion it doesn't fit your body.

I'm not sure this is relevant but I thought it might be a fun exchange. I'm in my 80's now. I was a teeager in the James Dean era. In HS, we wore variations of the outfit he wore in "Rebel Without a Cause", namely; T-shirt, Classic Levi's blue jeans, no belt, Black Loafers or Engineer Boots & Lightweight collared jackets. It wa a short trip to waist-length Black Leather Jackets. Being a Muscle Car guy, I found that I could look clean-cut in similar clothes because variations on that theme are almost endless. Replace the Lightweight Jacket with similar Boy-Racer style jackets (with Trans Am patches) or switch from jeans & T-shirts to Chinos & Polo shirts, add in Desert Boots w/matching belt, and it updates the boyish look to a mature theme. The caution is, you have to maintain your silhouette, else those clothes can look tight and ill-fitting. For Corporate business attire, I just moved through the decades wearing Sports Jackets, ties, and slacks that carefully avoided the outrageous edge to many of those office-wear trends. Now that I'm retired, I like that last variation of Chinos, Polo Shirts (or plain colored T-shirt/turtleneck), and Desert Boots or Driving Moc's, almost exclusively. I may still slip a Black Leather Jacket or Boy-Racer jacket over it. I know. At my age, that jacket thing is pushing it, but I still drive a black Trans Am, and never grew up, not really. Cheers.

Great video and advice…funny cause last night I was in fact doing a closet purge…I tried on every single dress shirt I own and although they are high quality dress shirts, I found most were way to large & ill fitting, making me look like I was drowning in fabric…I recently bought some shirts from Untuckit, a shop that specializes in shirts that are meant to be worn untucked as the name implies. Even though I’m carrying a little extra weight around the middle they fit great at the shoulders and chest. When I tried these on and compared them to my current dress shirts, well I couldn’t believe how I’ve been wearing those frumpy dress shirts…53 yrs old and barely figuring out I’ve been wearing the wrong clothes all these years…it’s all about the fit, great advice!

As an octogenarian I wholeheartedly endorse your "streamlined" approach. I am so glad that the "oversized" generation of clothes is over. I hate bigger than needed shirts and baggy pants, and being an old "shoe dog" I particularly like the streamlined look in footwear. I still have 3 or 4 pairs of classic Allen-Edmonds dress shoes and I will dust them off and wear them with pleasure.

@@Joey21071 Yeah mine is a personal preference and that all my Trousers are custom tailored. My trousers are mostly either light to medium wool high waisted pants and have s very nice drape. The quality of material is also very good. I also agree that when it comes to cotton type trousers, i mostly elect to go flat front on those as the cotton don’t drape well. But everything is a preference.

Pretty sound advice, What about socks or no socks? Wearing a shirt outside the trousers or tucked in? Wearing a necktie with a short-sleeved dress shirt? (I never would, always open collar with short sleeves. Wearing a necktie with a long-sleeved dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow is OK).

I'm 61. I retired early and haven't had a wedding to attend for several years so my wardrobe hasn't been updated. I had a funeral to go to a month ago, trading weddings for funerals now :( , and found my clothes were well out of fashion. I ended up wearing black denim pants with good shoes and a good well fitting dress shirt. I felt under dressed for the occasion. All the other senior men were wearing their 20 year old suis and it looked terrible. I wasn't being judgmental, I was just taking a mental note.

A number of years after retiring I donated all my suits and dress shirts to a nonprofit. I opted to purchase a single navy modest windowpane suit solely for weddings or funerals. I’d kept five ties to mix and match depending on the occasion. Likewise, in my mid 60s, I’m apt to attend more of the latter than the former haha.

Nothing wrong with “chasing” and wearing current trends at 40+ if you can actually pull it off. I dress more conservatively (appropriately) at the office, with well fitted and semi-tailored clothing. Then on evening and weekends I let my youthful energy and expression out with more artistic and creative clothing choices. Yes, they make me appear less professional, but I don’t care, because it’s outside of work and I am expressing the way I feel inside… and it’s fun to not follow every rule just because your supposed to look like a serious “dad”.

I am over 60, 6'5" and about 230 lbs. I wear size 15 shoes. I'm fit enough that I still play basketball at a respectable level, and I would describe myself as "tall, but not big". I'm not built like a defensive lineman; I am considerably leaner, but nowhere near as skinny as I was in my youth. My preference has long been for cuffed trousers, as anything not cuffed seems to emphasize the size of my feet. Unfortunately, such trousers have become more difficult to find lately. I don't think I'm lean enough to wear the flat front trousers recommended in the video, and my concern about leg width is that this style would make it difficult to draw emphasis away from the size of my feet.

I’m 52. I wear slim fit Volcom jeans with stretch, untucked t-shirts, flannel shirts, Vans when it’s cold and Reef Mick Fanning flip flops 6 months out of the year. I have some hybrids but pretty much live in boardshorts when it is warm. My style reflects my lifestyle. I do follow trends: when t-shirts were cut a little higher mine were too. Now the hem is lower and so are mine. I see so much judgment and hate about how at our age we should not follow fashion or be deliberate. If your idea of fashion is to use “classic” to avoid the current style that is fine. But to heap on judgment of others is so unnecessary.

Interesting perspective from a much younger man from a different continent. I had no idea what loafers were because the word is not common currency on this side of the Atlantic. Someone asked me what style of shoes I prefer, and I replied, "Anything comfortable that takes a good shine." And as it happens, all my shoes are quite similar to those worn by my father in the 1950s, and I don't care if they're in fashion or not because I've been setting my own style for more than 50 years after reading Oscar Wilde's opinion on the subject. "Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months." It's interesting that you described a pair of casual trousers as 'dress pants' because in my lexicon dress trousers are either striped to go with morning coat for day wear or black with piping down the outside to wear with dinner jacket in the evening. I heard another American talking about a 'dress shirt' that I would call a work shirt, because a dress shirt is either pleated to wear with black tie or Marcella to wear with white tie. Divided by a common language indeed.
