According to legend, Richard de Burgo, an Anglo-Norman warrior, founded Loughrea in 1236. Cloughan Castle was constructed in 1239 as an outpost castle a few miles away, halfway between Loughrea and Gort, outside the settlement of Kilchreest. Hugh de Burgo, a descendant of one of the oldest and most powerful families in Irish history and a son of Walter de Burgo, Earl of Ulster, lived at the castle for the last time in the 15th century.
Cloughan Castle was abandoned for decades before being repurchased by the Burke Family in 1973. Michael Burke, who has always been interested in history, thought it would be good to restore the crumbling castle that was on a neighbor's property.
When restoration work started, all that was left of the Norman tower house were its walls.
In 1996, Cloughan Castle underwent additional restoration, including the addition of the original Tower House structure.
The intended plan was to use it as a family residence, but according to Michael Burke, "the intention was to reproduce what it was like to live in a medieval castle, but without having to experience the hardship of thirteenth-century living." He hired local artisans and made every effort to use locally produced products. We truly liked the work and believe that when we pass away, we will have left something for the next generation, despite the fact that it was a massive project. It is a landmark that would currently just be a pile of stones without it.
Soon after, we began to get inquiries from people interested in renting it and wanting to experience staying in a castle. Within a short period of time, this went from one or two inquiries to the current situation, where the Castle hosts multiple wedding receptions and private parties each year.
