The area had a lot of history in relation to the buildings and racetrack which occupied the different parts of the new future Sydney Metro maintenance centre and stabling facility. Hi Paul, I really enjoyed this video and I appreciate the work and research that you have undertaken to bring us this wonderful presentation. The magnitude of this project is unbelievable and I had no idea until now that the project was this advanced. The Parramatta Speedway was a favourite of my nephew and I often took him to the smash up derbies and the monster trucks which I enjoyed as much as he did. I lived in Guildford for a few years and I could hear the activity of the Speedway on Friday and Saturday nights while sitting on my balcony. I have been in Sydney since May 29th and returning to Wagga this Saturday but unfortunately I have had Covid during this time (my third episode of covid) and was really unwell. I apologise for not contacting you via email but hopefully I will be much healthier and more mobile when I next visit Sydney in October/November. I am looking forward to your next presentation (too professional to be a video).

Hi Paul. The industrial rail network in that area was all connected to the Carlingford Line, those on the northern side of the racecourse via the Sandown Line. Industry to the south and east of Duck River/Creek, was connected to Clyde Yard. Before there was James Ruse Drive, there was Berry Street, and a very dangerous level crossing. Many terrible accidents there. Interesting origins of CHEP (originally Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool) - born out of WW2 military logistics, and privatised in 1949.

Certainly a lot of buildings have disappeared. Most of them seemed quite old and not really visually appealing, and besides, at least most of the businesses were able to move somewhere else. So I guess the buildings won’t be missed as much. The construction site size required is quite big for a stabling facility, so that’s pretty interesting. It’ll be sad to see the Rose Hill station go, but I guess it’s contributing it’s part to a more beneficial project. Thanks Paul, marvellous presentation.

The overall cost of the project must be eye-watering. They must be pretty confident it will turn a profit. It will definitely be interesting to see the final product once the project is finished.
@TransportVlog

Yes it is! However, it's not really about it making a profit, more about ensuring that Sydney's transport can cope with existing and future population growth. A big driver for this new line is the existing Central and Parramatta line being at capacity. Also it's hard to put a price on quicker journey times and less road congestion as people switch to the metro.

I love the piece of pink in the vacant lot...talk about their determination to advertise those blinds!!! LOL. Query - How can you demolish a heritage listed bridge - isn't the purpose of the heritage listing to legally stop any future destruction and to preserve history. If you can demolish a heritage listed building then the whole purpose of heritage listing seems quite superfluous and offensive to the original decision, its a complete oxymoron
@TransportVlog
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, It's complicated!, but basically a process has to be followed to consider all other options before a heritage building can be demolished. And in most cases, that process will find a way to retain the building, but not always. In the case of the Rosehill Railway Bridge, the alternative route for the tracks, would have involved redirecting major utilities (such as water, electricity, gas, or sewage) which would have been very expensive and disruptive. You can read more about this in this doc - majorprojects.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/prweb/PRRestService/mp/01/getContent?AttachRef=SSI-10038-MOD-2%2120211123T031939.185%20GMT

I started work at these DMR premises in 1972, which in those days were the big mechanical engineering workshops, with the fitting name of "Central Workshop". The adjacent hotmix plant was also a DMR facility until privatised in the early nineties. A lot of innovative engineering was undertaken at these workshops as back then the private sector wasn't as developed as it is now. After 25 years I moved out of mechanical engineering and went on to build the NSW Transport Management Centre (TMC) which opened in 1999 in time to manage the Olympic Transport effort. I stayed on at the TMC developing the systems it uses to manage the transport network till I retired a couple of years ago. Anyways keep up the good work!
