CMAT on Genius "This sums up the whole album, a song that I wrote because I have really, really been a very depressed person. I was thinking about the fact that during the times of the most depression, just unable to cope with the world, completely struggling, I’m the most craic-I’m so funny, I’m the best, a good-time gal. I listened to a podcast called You’re Wrong About and there was an episode on the study of suicide. One of the hosts talked about a friend of his who planned his death six months in advance. For those six months, he was the best guy, so much fun, so excited about life. He told everybody that he was moving to California and had all of his friends go to a going-away party, and then took his own life. I remember thinking that that is exactly what I would’ve done if I had got to the point. And it was an instinctive thought of, ‘Oh, if that was me, I would’ve said I was moving to Nashville’, because everyone knows I wanted to move to Nashville. It’s a really difficult song to play to people because it makes me very self-aware of how bad I have been and how bad I was for a while."

Mad to read. Just saw her supporting Florence in Belsonic last night. I'd never heard her music before and she opened with this song. It was so upbeat and full of energy, it felt euphoric, - I couldn't wait to look it up. Never expected its real meaning to be so dark!

Thx for sharing: Have listened to this song many times before, but read the "official lyrics" before - and couldn't believe it's about being so, so blue 😢 Your quote shows CMAT worked through this deep despair 🙏 So brave of her to publish this song - suicide and suicidal thoughts are so tabu Love to everyone and everybody ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜

I heard Nashville and CMAT for the first time about an hour ago. Was walking through the woods, the light was gorgeous, I was grinning and a feeling the joy I haven't felt in so long. Yep, I'm in love now.

to me this song is more than just moving to nashville and starting a new life. It' s a farewell letter to everything tha has been tourmenting you, consuming your precious energy, and taking advantage of your kindness. It's a wake up call for you to move on and chosing to be one with yourself. As someone who has been let down by his "friends" too many times, I imagine myself sitting with them in a dinner table and then leave, start the car and getting the hell out. with this song playing louder through the speakers. Anyway song of the year haha
