That was a very comprehensive overview of the various control devices for CNC machines.....thanks for taking the time to make this great vid.

So glad I found your video. I needed a solution for my Avid 5x10. Tried everything you showed. Just ordered the "P4-S USB Handwheel MPG CNC Controller for Mach3, Mach4, LinuxCNC,UCCNC" on Amazon for $287 all in. Seems to be the best available for us. Great informative and well done video, as always. Thank you sir!

Nice video! Great summary of the available control options. I know your insight is mostly Mach-focused but I think it roughly translates to other CNC machines. As you note, they all have their pros and cons and if you're willing to pay more you usually will get the much more custom solutions. Shame about the poor customer support and plugin implementation on the pendant

I have been round and round with this. Several controllers from game pads, shuttle pro, wireless keyboards (full size and mini), streampad, touch screen. The best thing so far is a pendant from VistaCNC. The fact that the estop works and has the LCD is a nice bonus. Still working on getting used to it. Can ROCKET front to back with great control. The wheel feels amazing.

Contour Shuttle Xpress does it for me, on both CNC/router machines I have. Love the progressive speed control on the outer wheel, and step control on the inner, indented wheel. Relatively cheap (bought 3 second hand units), almost plug and play. And it works in Adobe Premiere / DaVinci Resolve too!

Xbox controller user here! I have linked so many hotkeys to it that I can do 90% of the standard functions with it. Really nice! My screen is closer to my mill so I change the incrementals with one of the button. Same for feed rate ecc... For sure Pendant is the way to go, some more expensive ones have really a lot of features.

Holding down control on your keyboard while tapping arrow or up down keys on your keyboard does send pulse control to mach4 same as holding down shift jogs at full speed, still much nicer to have a pendant.

You can also program that into the game controller. Check out Jay Bates video, I think it's episode 4 of his playlist. he shows how to program the game controller for a little more control

Very good overview! I've been using a ShuttleXpress on my CNC mill for a long time and have been very happy with it, but the MPG does look sweet. Hearing about the software issues of the MPG is disappointing, so thanks for the warning. I'm in the process of overhauling the CNC to use UCCNC and one of their ethernet controllers (goodbye Mach3!), so I'm hoping that the ShuttleXpress will still work just as well once I'm done.

I use a game pad on match 3, it uses the left joystick for x/y and right joystick for z. They're speed moves relative to how much you push the stick, also it's setup so the left and right triggers on the back can be used to change the speed range of the joystick. ie without the trigger squeezed in I have the max speed of joy set at 25% so I have fine control of with the joystick, squeeze in the trigger and the max speed can go upto 100%. Basically I think you should have spent a bit move time setting up, but with the pendent you don't have to worry about it
@alejandroperez5368
2 жыл бұрын
Speed at 25% is still too fast for moving the Z-axis if you want to get close to the z-levelling sensor. As far as I remember, my trigger adjusts the speed from 0 to 100% from the normal jog speed, which I have set to only 30% of my max travel speed (18000mm/min)

This is quite Mach specific. Some CNC controllers will handle the keyboard in such a way as to make step control possible. When you think about it, typing is step control for letters, and you're doing it all the time, so it's obvious it can be done.

The real problem with the wireless versions is the manufacturer refuses to write a driver to work with mach4 and instead push their mach4 control board. I bought one of the WB04 wireless pendants and had to return it because there is no way to get it to work with mach4.

Robert, great tutorials as always. Do the control options you've shown all use the Acceleration Profiles previously set up in Mach 3-4 for example, when Manual jogging?
@RobertCowanDIY

Correct, jogging, rapids, etc all use the motion parameters setup in Mach3/4. You are simply adjusting the speed, but the profiles remain for each motor.

My Amazon Gamepad has analog proportional movement in Mach3. But it's not a good solution if you want accuracy and speed at the same time. I just set the normal travel speed to 30% so I have accuracy. If I want speed, I use the keyboard plus the shift modifier key.

I do not use March3/4: For UCCNC: the xbox controller plugin is 99% perfect. DPad for fast moving, Joystick for slow steps (for more accuracy bind the trigger buttons) If you don*t need a display (monitor mounted in sight or not needed) there is no real use for spending >200 bucks for an extra one.

@@RobertCowanDIY thanks for the reply! I do suspect chips could be getting in there. I would like to have Tormach offer something more robust. These Tormach people have made my knowledge and abilities which have been directly enhanced by owning my 440. Size hasn’t been inhibiting what I have been doing so far. If I could have known, I would have had a 770 MX which would fix some of my issues that I don’t like. I watch what you do as I learned from you on your 440. Whoever programmed that gamepad plugin just did a poor job. You could easily make the left analog stick a fast/coarse move, the d-pad a pulse move, the shoulder buttons hold for pulse size (eg hold left trigger 10 thou pulses) etc. etc. Now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and guess that maybe the host software doesn't allow such control, but still... Also I don't own a CNC router or anything similar, just a 3d printer XD

@RobertCowanDIY

This is HOBBY state of the art. The real stuff looks much nicer. It's not as bad as it seems though, it NEEDS to be utilitarian, since you need to make more adjustments. 3D printers have some cool interfaces, but in reality you don't really need to ever interface with one. I just hit print remotely and remove it when it's done... With CNC, you really need to interact with the machine a fair amount, so there need to be lots of buttons and adjustments.
@UloPe

@@RobertCowanDIY Thanks for the explanation. I wasn’t really talking about the amount of controls etc. though but just how non user friendly and hard to use everything looks (the jog controls you highlighted being a perfect example).
