Great job programming. I'm going to build my own CNC router and use it as you have. I spent 15 years as a CNC machinist in aerospace working with all types of metals, machinng wood is a nice change.

did you do any slate signs with a nice v-grooved lettering, please? I mean a 1/2" floor slate.. I'd love to make signs like this.. these are well priced, slate is quite soft and I can see them around my area but they are sandblasted. They look decent with some gold or silver filling or even natural with no filling at all..

I've never done a slate sign, but I guess that you would have to use som sort of diamond or carbide grinding bit to carve it out.

@Miroslav189 Also remember to buy a 48V 500W PSU. If you buy ball screws for your own machine, use 10mm pitch for X and Y axis' and 5mm pitch for the Z-axis. Then you will have a very fast machine with outstanding performance. Brian

@Miroslav189 They are some old Centent CN0162 drivers. I will recommend you to buy some Leadshine M542. A lot of companies sell them under their own name, like Kl-5042 from Keling and PM542 from Zapp Automation. A very good combo to this drive is SY60STH88-3008 stepper motor, 24HS1442 or 23-305-DS8A. They are all the same.

What CAD or other type of program do you use? Which program is the most reasonable in price that you know of for both drawing and scanning pictures that can then be carved by a CNC, or is there such a program? What CNC would you buy if you could get one again that is a reasonable price and does good work?

Hi. I use VCarve Pro and it is quite powerful. There is also VCarve Desktop for a better price, but it's limited to 600 x 600 milimeters. I also use Fusion 360 which is VERY powerful and free for home users. I have never considered buying a machine, because I have build my own, but I hear that Stepcraft machines are good machines. There are many dealers on the market, but you will usually get what you pay for. Brian

Brian Petersen thank you for your help. I've been looking at the vcarve pro. How much did making your own cnc cost you? Did you have some plans that you followed? If so, where at? Your router seems a lot more durable than most watched online. What type is it? Thanks again for the information. I want something that will last, but don't have thousands that I can spend.😉

It cost me around 1,500 USD to build. The price for making your own machine heavily depends on your skills and the tools you have available. It's my own design and was lucky to have the tools available when I was in the trade at that time. It took me a couple of years to build, because I had to spend money on the project according to my income, which was low because, I was an apprentice. Expect it to take some time, but be awarded for patience in the end :-)

You can use any of the input pins from 0 to 15 and assign that pin to the "Probe" input in Mach3 under "Input signals" in Ports and Pins". Contact me again if it does not work. You can watch this video to see how it is connected: kzitem.info/news/bejne/wKGIqISda3Wgm2U

Brian, You said you’d answer questions… It bummed me out to hear you repeated the process to get clear cut letters. My question is: Why conduct the original facing or planning cut? Lets say you cut the text and the designs anticpating the planner cut at about 1/16”. Why not do the planning cut at the end?
@BrianFyhnPetersen
8 жыл бұрын
+Navigator777777 Hi. Doing the facing cut first is mainly done to avoid chipping off the letters. The top edge of the letters gets a bit fuzzy after the sanding, so I performed a clean up cut to make it crisp, which is quite normal for many machining operations.
