Being happy and in a good mood CAN be a warning sign that a person suffering from depression is about to kill themselves. They have made their decision, have a plan, and know that they will soon be free of pain. I am surprised this expert did not mention that?
@tikdoe7563

Cheryl Depressed people can be in a happy mood sometimes though... who would really suspect she was happy because she was about to commit suicide? It's not clear sign unless the happiness came about in the form of a switch/very suddenly. Especially if she was usually in a "happy mood" it would not have been obvious.
@karmpuscookie

Because only an idiot would say what you just said. As a sufferer of anxiety and depression for decades, there are no 'warning signs' as such - depression is a fast trigger; you can be normal one minute, in despair the next. Thus, being happy and upbeat is not a sign of anything, other than how you are feeling at that moment. Leave the experts to comment on the 'warning signs'.

Antidepressants can cause an increase in suicidal thoughts. I personally have dealt with the issue of suicide prevention in my previous career. Sometimes a person is so depressed that they don't have the energy, mentally or otherwise to go thru with an attempt. As the medication starts to lift their spirits so to speak, they then find the energy or drive to follow thru with an attempt. It's unfortunate that the guest in this segment never stated such.

Natalee Patel, I agree and the second word in my comment is "can". I was simply pointing out that the guest didn't mention this point as a sign to be aware of. She speaks of asking if the person wants to hurt themselves but most people might see the person "feeling better" and might not know that they may want to ask them at that point if they feel like hurting themselves. Sometimes the person "feeling better" is actually a negative sign. Suicide can be a terrifying and horrific experience for the victim and their family and friends. I hope and pray that anyone who is contemplating such a move finds someone to talk to before they find themselves in that dark place and that the person they seek out knows all of the signs. Stay blessed.

Yes, this is very clear in the published scientific articles. Just want to make pro-offered correction. Antidepressants do not lift someone's "spirits" although you are correct that there may be more energy to follow through on the suicide. Antidepressants are not happy pills. Antidepressants may be of help for the vegetative signs: insomnia, appetite. There are serious and sometimes deadly side-effects of anti-depressants. There are 2 basic causes (etiology) of depression: Organic (brain chemistry) and Non-organic (non-brain related). For the Organic group, science shows us that only 33% of the Organic type depression may improve with antidepressant medication...and clinical science demonstrates the best course of treatment for both Organic and Non-organic causes of depression is psychotherapy with scientifically proven evidence treatments with a licensed PhD Clinical Psychologist. Psychiatrists are psychopharmacologists. They are not trained in psychotherapy.

CNN, I am disappointed. If the husband was in the dark then she clearly did not feel she was able to talk openly about her depression to her own family (either feeling like a burden or maybe not listened to). She likely felt trapped in having to continually upkeep a mask of happiness to both her family and to the public. Many people with depression do this and it is documented in research. By the way, there is new research showing that depression is frequently caused and reinforced by environmental factors and stressors. I would appreciate news sources handling the matter more like a symptom of and underlying problem rather than simply reinforcing depression as an illness with no "real" cause. Also, blindly restating how much women are more affected by men by depression without adding context reinforces a negative stereotype on women being mentally "weak," in some way. This is a double edged sword, as women then doubt the validity of their hardships as do the rest of society. Do not encourage the dismissal of people undergoing hidden hardships by labelling depression (a symptom of their circumstances) to simply a mental problem with no basis. This unacceptance and misunderstanding continually perpetuated by the news to the public is what, even in a minor way, plays a part in the very stigma around mental illness that traps people from even reaching out for help. It continues a cycle of hopelessness and misunderstanding depressed persons may feel. CNN, I expect more from you.

Luckily I threw up the pills I downed when I was a teenager. But scary to think that in that moment, it can actually end, if you chose a more effective way. salmonline - As a veteran who suffers from PTSD w/anxiety disorder, I can say with some certainty that IT NEVER PASSES! It always hides in wait. We fortunate few who are still here among you have been given skills to recognize triggers, & tools to help cope/deal with symptoms. But the pervasive "why even bother?" always lingers in the next thought, the next flashing light, the next unexpected noise, the next shout, or some other personal trigger. To non sufferers, "Deal with it or Don't" seem to be two separate valid (if unequal) choices. But to me they can sometimes seem to be merely just another cointoss in a perpetuity of cointosses. Along with the necessity of finding a coin to bother to toss with...

I have my own difficulties with anxiety and depression. Thankfully I got some help to head off the suicidal fantasy. I will always have to deal with The Black Dreadfuls. I think that Kate's brain chemistry threw her under the bus. She didn't want to kill herself. But her brain, for what ever reason, cooked up the chemical bath that made her think that suicide was the only answer for her problem. The guilt that her family will be feeling right now will be overwhelming and confusing. But this could have happened at any time; it could have happened with her husband and daughter in the next room, instead of a couple of blocks away. That is the painful truth.

I ate sunflower seeds a year ago and went into a dive, thinking about death. I dusted off my allergy test and, sure enough, sunflower seeds are allergens. It took me a full 72 hours to recover. Other allergens are milk, eggs, turkey, bananas. I also avoid Aspartame and artificial sweeteners. These affect my moods and send my stomach into fits.

I can't speak for other regions, but mental health care in my area is atrocious. There are two standards of care: one for those who have insurance/money, and one for those who don't, which often leads to prolonging/worsening of the condition, even homelessness and death. I always like how people in the "have" group blithely refer to help being out there. I know it's not in the institutions we have here, and I suspect it's a problem elsewhere. Just because you have somewhere for people to go in a mental health crisis doesn't mean it's a good place.

One really common factor that throws people for a loop is that the people left behind will say that they didn’t see it coming, especially because the decedent will seem happy, up, in the 24 hours right before the suicide. Doctors say this is due to the fact that the decedent is relieved, even “happy” because they have made the decision to kill themselves and will do so within the next few hours. This makes it really difficult to tell if someone is in immediate danger.

Why were they living apart? The husband should never have left her alone. They took a vow forever and it’s his responsibility to keep the family together especially when she was struggling. Sorry for their family’s lost.

NO As a person who has been (and still is somewhat dealing) with mental illness, as well as being impacted by the illness of familymembers I do not blame anyone can`t deal with it. Remember, the people around patients are verry often helpless and suffering themselves. We do not know why they lived separated

Susie Que my experience with family... many people with depression and anxiety are simply forced into isolation by none other than their "loved ones" who have no clue what isolation becomes to people like me...it's devastating and god only knows how I've survived this long...alone...

I know my self how hard it is to live with mentally ill family members, so much that it has affcted my own mental health badly. Sometimes/ many Times/ most of the time? the family is just helpless and unable o cope with it, even to the extend of where it affects their life and their health too

I'm not surprised she did this now learning about him wanting a divorce and had moved out from the home and not being there for her through sickness and in health! A lot of spouses leave when the other becomes mentally ill and it's just not fair he just didn't want to deal with it so he can keep his kind words to Himself he let her down and she felt alone and hopeless may she rest in peace now.

Many of us struggle with being depressed, probably more than we know. I’m sure being separated from her husband and living apart didn’t help any...it’s my opinion that there is more to this story than we know, but we will. I’m sad for her daughter...and I hope she finds help dealing with this, as many of us have when we’ve lost a parent. Blessings on Bea. She needs some true support.

Suicide is a sudden and quick decision that is made according to patients I have had. If it's time, they will find it. It is sooo tragic, painful, sad, but, hard to intervene. That's my experience.

Sometimes we need to look at it in a different perspective- she decided to take her exit route. She was going through pain and her should took that path. It's very difficult for those left behind to accept this - suicide. But for those in the know (on a different POV of those with mental illness see this as the way out rather than suffer endlessly. She tried very hard. Only her knows the truth. RIP, Kate, Love and Light💕💗

There has been warning signs and may have been overlooked. We need to hear from Kate’s family members about her state of mind in recent weeks. Suicide is hard on anyone and with a known history, separation, loneliness, feelings of losing grip of life and no plans to hit a rescue me button, is the hardest moment and position to be in. Always tell someone who cares about what you are feeling. We need to invent the RESCUE ME button! A button to call the person to talk you out of it!!!!!!! 🙏🏼Rest In Peace ✌️ Kate, so sorry for all. Praying for all in pain🙏🏼

Alisyn mentioned something really important here - do you have someone you're worried about committed? Most professionals will say unless it's an emergency, GOD NO. Call hotlines and friends but only use 911 as an absolute last resort because it will ruin their lives and certainly your relationship with them. Calling 911 for someone in crisis will result in at least EMTs but also (more likely) police to come escort them to hospital, where they will be forcibly kept for 72 hours in most places. This means they WILL be seen escorted out of their home, humiliated for an illness they have, they may very well lose their job (especially if kept from telephones the duration, the norm) and they often find themselves in a FAR, far worse position for your iffy attempt at good will. Now they face the stigma of a mental illness, a recent "voluntary" job loss, and will inevitably suffer the loss of confidence and friends. In my experience, clients who are committed are more likely to suffer relapse and suicidal ideation in the following year, with two cases in particular coming to mind that exactly follow this trajectory. A spouse and parent wanted to "scare them out" of their illness. One jumped from a local bridge, the other overdosed while their mother was on the radio extolling the virtues of private therapy. The more difficult reality is knowing many of you are reading this and thinking "Perfect! Just the way to punish them for all the drama!" and to you I suggest: remove yourself. Put them in touch with organizations and stay out of their lives. As much as YOU think you'll be better off, it will be a huge relief for anyone suffering anxiety or depression to know they have one less person out to "catch them" at their worst. If your inkling is to prove you're worse off by knowing them by having them forcible detained: you are not a loved one and should stop pretending to be.
