It is possible to capture CO2 (carbon capture or carbon sequestration) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). also known as lye or caustic soda. Both react to produce sodium carbonate and water.
CO2 + NaOH → Na2Co3 + H2O
In an aqueous medium (NaOH dissolved in water) the reaction is much faster.
It is possible to prepare CO2 mixing sodium bicarbonate and vinegar in a bottle, with a bored cork with a flexible tube to get the gas.
