This is the longer, original version of the Christmas Coca~Cola commercial based on the song "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" (In perfect harmony), which originated as the Hilltop commercial made in 1971. It was later made into a full song and sung by the "The New Seekers". The revision became a huge hit in 1971 and 72. You can hear that version of the song here - • I'D LIKE TO TEACH THE ...
Of all the Coca~Cola commercials, this is the one that makes me feel like a young child again and for whatever reason is one of the earliest television memories I have.
In regards to the song, it was written in a London airport after a long layover because of heavy fog. Hey, that's kind of Christmasy, right? You know, Rudolph...nose so bright...sleigh, fog?
Trivia on the song:
With the original commercial simply titled as "Hilltop", it cost Coca~Cola $250,000 ($1.5 million today's dollars), which was the most expensive commercial in history at that time!
The Christmas version of the song began playing in 1975 and I remember seeing it on TV well into the early 80s.
Many have heard that it's because of Coca-Cola that Santa wears red and white and that they made him appear fatter. This is simply false history. Santa Is literally Saint Nicholas and he's been depicted as an older larger gentleman wearing red and white for centuries I've come across images all through the 1800s showing Santa being quite large. Even the Christmas tale, "Twas the Night Before Christmas" written in 1823 depicts him as rotund and says in part,
"And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face, and a little round belly
That shook when he laugh’d, like a bowl full of jelly:
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laugh’d when I saw him in spite of myself;"
Here is a great site talking about how Santa has changed over the years with public domain images. publicdomainre...
