This commercial, although meant to advertise coke, instead succeeded at encapsulating the absolute majesty of steam locomotives, and why enthusiasts love them. The power, the sound, the steam spewing all over the place and the stories of the people who drove them. It’s all in this 3 minute video!

People may never have thought that when she was built she would become such an icon for American railroads, but ol 765 became what are the most famous locomotives out there! It’s wonderful to see people come together to save historic pieces of railroad history that the railroad companies thought was either a waste of their money or time. Steam locomotives will truly be the most beautiful locomotives out there. Diesel and electric locomotives just don’t look as classy as a good old steam engine. The railroad wanted to scrap her but her fans wouldn’t let that happen and she’s still here persevering to this day thanks to all the wonderful people who helped rescue her.

No words can be said about a Steam Locomotive. You have to see one up closes to understand that sprite of steam. Normal lots of people just keep away cues there afraid of others sometimes. But when a Steam Locomotive is there all that fear goes away its like a family member you never know you had until you see her. A Steam Locomotive is not just tons of Metal. Its the one steam machine that man ever built that has a sole in it. NKP 765 I hope to see you one day.

This video brings tears to my eyes. I grew up with steam locomotives in the 1950's. My grandfather used to run Berkshire type locomotives just like the 765, on the Virginian Railway. There was a place a few miles outside our town, at a country grade crossing called MC's Hill between Victoria and Kenbridge Va., where we would sometimes go to wave at him as his train came by.

I like trains. My grandmother lived in Savanna, Illinois, a little river town on the Mississippi River and also a railroad town. Two major railroads had rail yards there, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy, and The Milwaukee Road. They employed a lot of people and the railroads almost defined the town. I can remember steam locomotives and saw many pass right by my grandmother's house, about 60 yards from the Burlington main line. When a train passed the house, the house would shake. When the engineer of a steam engine blew the whistle, well - there are no words for that sound. This seems Christmas-y t me. It’s in the winter (you can see the boy’s breath at the window), we spent Christmas at my grandmother’s, and the boy is playing with an electric train. I got a Lionel electric train for Christmas when I was 7 or 8 years old. (I still have it.) I send this link to people in my Christmas letter every year.
