What I really loved about Cruz was that at no point did he really change as a character. His philosophy was ALWAYS "do what it takes to stay on top", it's just that Miguel never realized that this could be a bad thing. Considering how often some form of "achieve your dreams no matter what!" Is a moral in kids media, I think this was an excellent idea.

I agree. Ernesto is a fantastic villain, especially after seeing so many terribly written twist-villains in Disney movies (*cough* Frozen and Zootopia *cough*).
@Christopher_TG
5 жыл бұрын
This is particularly key given Disney's obsession with twist villains recently. The reason most of the twist villains don't work is because their villainous persona is so out of touch with their not-so-villainous one. It doesn't come off as a fair twist because it's so completely out of left field. In Coco the surprise villainy actually makes sense as it's just a natural extension of de la Cruz's narcissistic personality of which we get showered in examples throughout the movie before actually meeting him.
@AtarahDerek

I love that the resolution of the plot required two people to *give up* their dreams in order to help one another. Miguel was willing to give up his music dream to restore Héctor to the family, and Héctor was willing to give up his last chance to see Coco--and by extension his afterlife--to make sure Miguel made it back home safely. And by being willing to make those sacrifices, they both achieved what they wanted in a far sweeter, more enduring manner than they ever would've been able to attain on their own. That's what love is; mutual self-sacrifice. When you and your loved one give up your own dreams to fulfill the other person's, both your dreams end up being truly, wholly fulfilled. That aversion of the usual "follow your own heart/dreams" Disney trope is what made me really enjoy Frozen and then fall in love with Coco. I never saw de la Cruz as a twist villain for audiences; just for Miguel. I also enjoy de la Cruz's villainy because, again, it's different from standard Disney villain fare. Usually, with a villain who is an actual character and not just some distant, disembodied entity that's vaguely threatening, and especially with a twist villain, he or she is trying to grab power. Here, de la Cruz already has power, wealth and fame. He's not trying to take over the world, he's just trying to maintain the status quo of himself at the top. And that requires doing whatever it takes to cover up the...ahem...skeletons in his closet. True, his first act of villainy was done to grab fame...sort of. But when we meet him, he has everything he wants and isn't seeking anything more. He just wants things to remain as they are.

it’s also worth mentioning that ernesto has already DONE his evil. it’s a retroactive twist. it feels different than a character you’ve been told is good suddenly doing an evil thing. and it’s necessary for the story-what ernesto does sets the scene for the entire movie. nothing in the movie can happen without him making that decision

Fun fact: The Olaf short was fucking hated here in Mexico. It was removed after the first week. People say it's because Disney only allowed the short to be played on the opening week, but a more popular theory is that everyone disliked how long it was and demanded for it to be taken down. Cinemex even advertised it removed the short. Some other fun facts: - It broke the record as the highest-grossing movie here in Mexico - Everyone and their mothers fucking watched it. So far it's the ONLY film in my entire life where I've had to preorder tickets even though when I watched it, it was on its third week of airing.

That's something I really appreciated about this movie. When so many other western animation films push the message of "follow your dreams, no matter the doubters and the obstacles," this film has the message of "there are some things in life that are more important." It reminds people that following your passion without giving any regard to what that might do to the people around you, people who love and care for you, can actually be very selfish. This movie is one of Pixar's finest, and that's saying a lot given their track record.
@BSR-zy2so
4 жыл бұрын
That was kind of where the movie fell flat for me. I’ll acknowledge that I’m a little biased because I grew up in a really abusive family, but I was selfish and followed my dreams anyway. As far as I can tell, I’m much happier for it. My family didn’t appreciate science because they thought that it was an affront to GOD, and they didn’t believe in college because they said they thought it created Atheists. They had really strong gender roles that stifled female leadership and power. I eventually came to the conclusion that if I lived for my family’s happiness, I would never be proud of the person I was. I could never give up my love for neurogenesis research or experimental methodology to appease my family’s ignorance. I also had to learn to stop defining myself by my family. The problem is that it felt like the movie advocated for the opposite, and that has dangerous implications. Not everyone comes from these media-idealized families that have their best interests at heart. I especially hated that Miguel was relieved when he found out that he wasn’t biologically related to the villain. I think we need to avoid implying that the bad actions of our family members somehow reflect on us as people. I also think that Miguel had an obligation to advocate for his own interests. Otherwise, you often end up unhappy. There were things I definitely liked about the movie. I appreciated the music and Mexican culture that the movie showcased. As a Hispanic person myself (technically I’m mixed I guess), I thought it was so great to see a main character that looked like me. The movie as a whole was visually interesting and very creative. However, I just can’t bring myself to enjoy it because of its themes.

I've gone to see it four times so far, and trust me, it doesn't get any easier. There are three scenes in the movie that make me cry: 1. the flashback of Hector singing "Remember Me" to Coco, 2. Miguel singing it to Coco to help her remember her father, and 3. the entirety of "Proud Corazon." Even on my fourth viewing, I bawled my friggin' eyes out at each of those scenes, and now just THINKING about them brings tears to my eyes. Not even joking. I literally started tearing up just now while thinking about them.

Within the first 10 minutes of the movie, I started bawling. Mama Imelda's hard work to keep the family together reminds me of the sacrifices my mother made. Miguel's father LEGIT looks like my uncle, as well as some of the characters. The music was what really hit me - it was amazing to see that the movie was filled with different styles. Coco really reminded me to appreciate my family and where I come from, especially since I've had trouble with my identity as an American with Mexican roots. When the duo for "Remember Me" was released on Spotify, I started crying when I listened to it because I thought of my grandmother who had to go back to Mexico when I was still young, and she told me to remember her until she comes back.

Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead is a international holiday, and everyone has the right to enjoy it!

To be fair to Disney, at the time they filed for that trademark "Dia de los Muertos" was going to be the name of the movie and they were trying to protect their film's branding, not to mention that Dia de los Muertos is actually not the name of the holiday. It's the Spanish back-translation of the English translation (Day of the Dead) of the actual name of the holiday, Día de Muertos. Still, it was a poor decision from Disney and once they realized the mistake they immediately rescinded their trademark request, renamed the film, and hired the exact same people that called them out on it to be cultural consultants to prevent making further insensitive mistakes.
@Christopher_TG
4 жыл бұрын
In Disney's defense: 1. Dia de los Muertos isn't actually the name of the holiday. That's the back-translation of the actual name of the holiday, Dia de Muertos. 2. It's standard procedure for studios to place trademarks on a bunch of potential titles of the film even if all but one won't be used, and at the time Dia de los Muertos was a name they were considering. Still bad form, though.

I cried so much at the end. This movie showed me that Pixar's still got it. Their last few movies were by no means bad (their only real stinker is Cars 2 IMO), but they didn't quite feel as powerful as some of their earlier ones had. Perhaps it's because the newer films were competing less with the older films themselves and more with my nostalgia, but still. I was sad, because I thought they had lost their way- but they've found it again. There was as much raw, emotional power in this movie as any they have ever made.

Otherwise it's made by Pixar with a +100 M$ budget, I find it less edgy than Book of Life, and the plot is ten times simple, even trying hard to push it to a 1h45 movie before Miguel audition song.

Oh my god, this movie actually had me crying for a long time. Like so far for me, it's Pixar's biggest tear-jerker. Especially after this year having so many mediocre animated films, this is just a breath of fresh air. Just listening to the soundtrack alone this week makes me tear up, it's that beautiful. Music has always been my biggest weakness on the emotional scale, and it's nice to see Pixar have a musical film (I'm sure they've made one or two others, but I don't remember.)

It seems that it would be a Christmas special on TV, but they weren't sure if Coco would be a huge success or not, so they put in to attract more people. I think that it's understandable from a financial point of view, because there are people who are scary of the skeletons (yes, there are people like that) and many racists who openly hate anything related with Mexico. In Mexico they quit it in after week, by popular demand. But I guess than in USA you have to deal with it.

Also known as the hairless Mexican dog breed that's named after Xolotl, the Aztecan god of death?? *Edit:* Some Subway restaurants are giving Coco keychains with kids meals, btw. Unfortunately, if you wanna buy just the toy instead of a kids meal, I think the toy is like $9 or something, which is stupid. I mean, McDonald's kids meal toys cost like $1. I honestly found the book of life kinda sickening when it comes to the story. They started out pretty good but then kinda dropped battle soldier kid halfway through. While I liked the wooden style and other things but cocos style was great and so detailed! The story is tear jerking and amazing! I found this an amazing movie... the flying technicolor tiger takes the cake for coolest animal in Pixar almost! I also enjoyed seeing Miguel's family, they act like a real family and it's easy to believe they where based off a real family and this is pushing me to learn Spanish and I'm gonna see if I can go to Mexico and learn more about they're culture

When I watched this movie the only thing I expected going into it was the twist villain which I guessed right away, but aside from that, THIS. MOVIE. IS. AMAZING. Words cannot describe how much I love this movie. I've always wanted to get invested in other countries' cultures, since the American education system is extremely self-centered in getting every little detail of American drilled into our brains, then literally spends the least amount of time on other countries. (I'm in seventh grade and we literally had ONE TINY PARAGRAPH about one of the most influential countries in my life, France. They went over their main economy, two sentences about their history, and literally was just devoted into telling the story of The Statue of Liberty.) THANK YOU PIXAR FOR COCO I am now educated more than 85% of my grade.

I kinda wish we could be Mexico in pulling the short out, but it was okay for what it was... I just wish they actually made it short or excluded it entirely and debuted it online or on tv. Bottom line, though, Coco is amazing and I really hope that everyone can watch and learn something (I also heard, but haven't seen it yet, that they say to look up the holiday, if interested, in your libraries!) **SPOILER ALERT*** My only real beef was how quickly Ernesto's villain button was clicked. I mean when Miguel first appeared, he jumped right into the water to save him, then was thrilled and a little puzzled (obviously) to think he had a great grandson. Even when Hector showed up, he did not turn evil. It was not until the way too convenient movie scene (seriously, who uses the time they straight up murdered their friend in a movie scene?) and Miguel points it out does he turn really evil. It did not seem consistent. It was almost like this was a last minute change. Otherwise a beautiful movie.

How Hector's mannerisms change throughout the film make sense when you consider how Imelda changes similarly but in completely the opposite direction. It's why they're such an engaging and lovable couple. At the beginning of the movie, Hector is a little on the wild and carefree side while Imelda is WAY too strict and imposing. When they get together, they balance out: he becomes more serious and Imelda loosens up.

Cat that kills hoomans LOL The best way I can describe an SJW is they're someone who feels like they need to speak for groups who can't speak for themselves. They're a bunch of people who think EVERY THING is offensive. For example, I've seen a video where a lady freaked out on her Uber driver for like 15 minutes because he had a cute little Hawaiian hula dancer girl on the dashboard of his car, and she was calling him a racist pig because he didn't get the permission of the Hawaiian people to represent their culture as a white man. I'M NOT KIDDING. AND SHE WAS 100% SERIOUS.

Social Justice Warrior. Basically standing up for people's rights when they were not asked to and have no connection to the group in question. It's typically used as an ironic insult because these people often go too far in "protecting" others, often attacking those they believe are oppressing that group (Who are often white people, particularly men.)

Now I just wish/hope TBOL gets the recognition it deserve, I know it isnt as great as Coco, but gosh darn its great visually, while Coco emphasise on the Day of the Dead theme. Yes, I think the same. TBOL has its flaws, but the good parts, are really good (like the original songs, the visuals and the characthers desing...). Even some clichés, like the love triangle (I don't tend to like them) weren't annoying for me. I hope that Coco help the movie to receive a bigger recognition. I'm still bitter for the fact that it wasn't even nominated for an Oscar that year. But Despicable F*ckin* Minions 2 and The Croods were nominated that year...and they have even more flaws than TBOL. Honestly, I can't see the similarities between Coco and Book of Life. I will say Coco resembles Gutierrez’s other work, El Tigre, and the episode where its main character(s) travel to the land of the dead, near the Day of the Dead, where they meet their ancestors and seek to get home before they become a skeleton themselves all the while learning of where they want to go in life. Same plot structure, except Coco’s motif has more a musical vibe where El Tigre’s has a heroic (or Lucha Libre) vibe. Eh.

I've seen Coco four times so far, and trust me, it doesn't get any easier. There are three scenes in the movie that make me cry: 1. the flashback of Hector singing "Remember Me" to Coco, 2. She said human CHILD. Merida is a teenager and Mr. Incredible is an adult

Jaysa Hunter Well, Merida is technically a child since teenagers are still kids.

kat_lover368 Hah, no. Teenagers act and think differently than a child. Miguel is supposed to encompass children, not teens, so Merida doesn't count because she's supposed to encompass teens.

I loved how you put the music in spanish in the background ~ Also I loved Coco, as a Mexican i really loved how they represented our culture and our traditions, and i loved the music so much, especially recuerdame

People here at Mexico hated the frozen short, to the point where theaters started to play the movie without the short after like a week of the movie airing

That bumper at the end of the video about John Lassiter was very mature and well handled. A breath of fresh air to be honest.
