I'm confused. Row 1 in the video says to start by S1 but in the written directions, it says P1. Which do I do first? Also, can this pattern be used on just paired needles or does it only work in the round with either a circular needle or double pointed needles?

Hi there, sorry for the confusion! It really does not matter. Either you slip the first stitch in row 1 or purl it you will get the right pattern. In the written instruction I mentioned purl because in every knitting fabric the very first stitch , which is the edge stitch in row 1, is usually knit/purl, but after first row you can slip the edge stitch. In tutorial I preferred to mention slip stitch to make it easier for learners to follow the pattern in each row by doing slip stitch at the beginning of each row. The given instruction in this tutorial is for flat fabric, meaning you need to work on paired needles not DPNS or circular. For working on circular or DPNS there should be some adjustments on the pattern, for that you can check this link www.watchknitting.com/2018/03/coccon-stitch-hat/

@@watchknitting This really helps! Thank you. My cocoon stitch looks much better than I did when I used the circular needle.
