I was in a record shop in Athens, Georgia in '85 when I first heard this. A really cute Goth chick who worked at the shop played the entire Cocteau's import 12" record The Spangle Maker for me, exclaiming, "this is the best fucking music ever made!" as we danced around the shop doing a waltz. Simon Raymonde's bass is sonic perfection, and Elizabeth Fraser's singing proved that lyrics don't have to mean fuck-all when they're sung so beautifully as here.

We're learning now of other meanings, etc, to this song,. anyway, wish I'd lived there then but it was a little later in Athens for me.

I've been thinking a lot about this. I believe we are souls having a three dimensional experience, like a fleeting dream. We are at our core creators. When I leave this reality I want to create a Cocteau Twins inspired world. It's all spirals of sounds, waterfalls, flying, longing, love, bliss.

Netflix brought me here. Didn't know it was Cocteau Twins. Searched using lyrics and here I am. Heard it on the end credits of Halston and thought "Damn, what a voice". Now it makes sense. It's Elizabeth.

First heard this as a teen when they played it on "the Old Grey Whistle Test", have been obsessed with it for the resulting 30 odd years. It never fails to move me. I wrote a book where the main character was also in love with this song and made her partner listen to it, and she knew they were wrong when it wasn't appreciated. How can anyone not love this song? Also I am scottish so biased ;-)

The lyrics don't make sense It's been said that the lyrics/words where chosen for how they sound vocally ...I thought maybe if they where influenced by siouxsie sioux's singing style because while out side smoking at a school disco I thought this playing from inside but it was Siouxie and the Banshee 🤣
