I would argue that it is not always an indicator of DV or DA. I’m in no way part of an abusive relationship. However, I have been a victim of narcissistic and verbal abuse for the majority of my life so I had a bad habit of always blaming me. Plus I’m in recovery so some of that is just me try I to hold myself accountable and admit when I’m wrong. So if that was me in the footage, I’d probably act in a somewhat similar manner and you’d be wrong about my partner being abusive.

@@dandilion8567 I wasn't blaming Brian. I was blaming Gabby for the abuse in that instance. The bodycam footage is just a small snippet of their life together. There were many years of them together before this moment. You may feel like you can relate to a moment because of your life experiences, but NO ONE can say they KNOW someone from a moment. But let's talk about facts: Women aren't typically physical abusers. They are "emotional" abusers. Women only turn to physical abuse when they have gotten away with the emotional abuse for so long. If anything, this story should shine a bright light on the abuse of men by women and teaching men how to leave those relationships before they "rage quit." But no one wants to talk about that. Why? Because it may tarnish the "poor, sweet girl" image that everyone has of Gabby? Gabby may have been the victim in the last few minutes of her life. But Brian was a victim for YEARS.

The last year of police bashing is going to make them very careful to "be more empathetic" and to not do what they would normally do (arrest and move on to next idiots) as to watch their backs. It's amazing anyone would want to be a cop at this point. I thought they did an incredible job and should be wildly applauded for doing everything they did to follow the law and to help people who can't behave themselves. Did you watch the entire footage? IMO the police were following the law, as Brian was the one who had marks and scratches, not Gabby. They would have taken her to jail and given her a criminal record. I guess you're dumb enough to think that would have helped her, she would have just gone back to him after that- he'd have bailed her out. She had her van and could have driven away and vowed to never see him again, but she did not do that apparently. She chose to continue on with this man. When the police incident happened, the police called the original caller back to ask if they had actually seen Brian strike her. They said that it could have been him defending against her movements and that they were not 100% sure he was hitting her. So- you're disappointed about a comment about police- yet you're probably the first person to tell everyone exactly what they should have done. Wake up- people like Stephanie and myself know the police's hands are tied and hence, we're getting undesirable outcomes. We should thank/blame you since I'm sure you supported it.

@@elizabethd4843 I felt like you for a couple of days as well. The police did everything they could, saw Brian’s scratches, gave Gabby water and all the rest. THEN I watched the hour + video. That’s the one where the officer did ask Gabby about marks on her face and I think her legs. Towards the end of the stop the officer started lecturing Gabby about anxiety and how he could arrest her. The officer started lecturing Gabby about how and his “ex” wife did the same things as Gabby and Brian are doing. The police and Brian fist bumped or elbow, whatever. After watching THAT I felt like Brian got some satisfaction because he was able to convince the police that this was her being crazy. Brian was trying to leave her back at Moonflower, that’s why she crawled over him. She didn’t want him leaving her in the middle of nowhere. She was taking up for him because if he got in trouble, he’d take it out on her… Which seems to be what happened anyway. Also, there’s supposed to be a video out there where Gabby is talking to a female officer. I haven’t found it yet but no one is talking about that one, either.

Brian worked too and seems his parents could have helped. Also Gabby was living in Brian's parents home probably for free. And Brian drove the van and took video of her, that was his job. A lot of influencers have boyfriends so they have some one to film them and the boyfriends come employed too. We don't know everything about them based on one hour police camera vid. Also she is quite sensitive and some mental health problems so maybe Brian ask is the influencer career a good idea, we don't know. Or it came from malicious place.

Lemme start by stating that I'm not an expert, but watching the body cam footage brought me right back to that state of emergency and anxiety. I'm a DV, SV and emotional abuse survivor, and what I see is a young woman exhausted by long-term gaslighting. It sounds impossible, but when you have to constantly fight to prove that your perception of reality is valid, sometimes you would rather take all the blame than argue pointlessly about how you feel and what you see. Because deep down you know it doesn't matter to your partner. Their version of events, the gaslighting script, will always prevail. So out of sheer survival and the need to hold on to the last crumbs of energy and sanity you have left, you buy a minute of peace with an admission of guilt regardless if it's true or not. The contrast between her distress and his comfort while interacting with the officers should have been a huge red flag IMO.

Oh there were definitely several red flags and the officers ignored just about every single of them. Do they even get training for DV calls? I feel like they could benefit from teaming up with a social worker for that type of intervention. It's different! You can't just find the culprit, slap a fine on the situation and call it a day. Separating a couple for one night when they are going through domestic issues rooted in violence, control, and abuse, isn't going to solve the problem. It doesn't keep anyone safe in the long run. They need to look at the power dynamics in the couple. Who brings in the money? Who has more potential for wanting control? Did one of the parties recently lose that power in the couple? Did one of them sacrifice their support network to be with the other? Did someone just lose their job and how had that affected the couple? At first I thought that's what the officer was trying to do, talking to Brian about his situation at home to gain trust and get more information but nah. Buddy over here just divulges personal medical information about a civilian on camera and that's it. Maybe his wife doesn't want the entire world to know she's taking medication? That's her private business and not even her doctor is allowed to talk about that. How would he feel if he had to take Viagra and his wife announced it on National TV? *allegedly, but feel free to try to come for me 😂*

@Bri Grant Up to a point you are right. The problem is that you can't expect Police to be psychologists and seers predicting the future. I have a huge amount of respect for you Stephanie, and the work you do. I love your channel and your videos. But I have to strongly disagree with your comments on the Moab police in this case. I felt your statements and opinions are highly dismissive and even a little close-minded. I don’t understand why it has to be so black and white. Why must we choose between a violent, unjust arrest or the police being chummy with a potentially abusive partner? Why must we choose between the death of a mentally ill person or letting them go free with someone who could be taking advantage of them and hurting them? If the dispatcher informed the police about the call, which we all know had someone saying they witnessed Brian hitting her, they had a duty to investigate this thoroughly. And with the updated body cam footage, we also know Gabby told them he had scratched her and injured her, never mind her being so obviously distraught while he is cool as a cucumber. All of these are red flags. But the footage? It shows them being chummy and buddies with Brian. I also think your statements completely disregard the statistics concerning law enforcement and domestic violence. I know we’re all entitled to our opinions, and I doubt you’ll see this. But if you do, I just wanted to offer another perspective on this situation. Yes, hindsight is 20/20, but I do believe these officers deserve some criticism and that they should, in fact, welcome the criticism. People pointing out what they potentially did wrong can only make them better cops, and hopefully, better people. Again, I love your videos Stephanie and I respect you so much, as well as your opinions. I hope you can see this is coming from a good place.

I agree with Stephanie and disagree with you @Coffee Time With Cee. Wake up- people like Stephanie and myself know the police's hands are tied and hence, we're getting undesireable outcomes. We should thank/blame you since I'm sure you supported it.
@coffeetimewithcee9940

@@elizabethd4843 First, I just want to say thank you for calling me dumb in response to a comment I made that was nothing but respectful to Stephanie and her opinion. That truly made me want to read your comment with empathy and really made me want to try to understand your point of view. On that note, I don't think arrest was the only option here, which I tried to say when I discussed disliking this black-or-white thinking we've all seemed to fall into recently. I think the cops had other options and actively chose not to arrest who they knew to be the "dominant aggressor". I've actually seen other law enforcement officials state their opinions on the bodycam footage and most of them agree that the cops had a duty, and all the information, to do more for Gabby. Secondly, "we've" been getting "undesirable" outcomes from the police since they were founded. Law enforcement kills civilians pretty regularly, which I consider an undesirable outcome. Recent criticism against law enforcement has not changed that, nor has it made "undesirable" outcomes more prevalent, in my opinion. It has merely brought these issues to light and made us all sit down and think about how we can fix this. At least, it has made *me* sit down and truly consider how we can make these situations as non-existent as possible. Thirdly, you're entitled to your opinion, as is Stephanie, which I also stated. I respect that even after reading this, you may not change your mind, just as I did not change mine. Have a great day/night

I knew what would happen. It's why he brought two Pelican Cases so big that I could lay inside them. He went back to his parents where he still lives. I filed a Restraining Order. He saw the male try to lock her out of the vehicle... He was trying to disengage from her. He hung her backpack on the back so we would have her shit so he wouldn't have to engage with her." How the story changed from the 911 call to this? I don't know. I can't explain that. But the police got the same story from the witness, Gabby, and Brian. @@erictrott6553 the autopsy initially stated her cause of death was murder. now they released the cause of death was strangulation. a trial will tell us if he’s responsible so fair enough. manipulators are great at making someone get angry, and then when they retaliate they make them look crazy. in my opinion it’s pretty obvious that that’s what he was doing. the initial 911 call would probably be the most accurate since eye witness testimony can be warped so fast. if you believe that she was the abuser, that’s your opinion vs mine and neither of us really know. however, if you’ve ever been close to a narcissist, you would know how good they are making people think they’re the crazy one.

My opinion, of course, but it would seem that someone who wants to have an internet presence (blog, website, Instagram, TikTok, and KZitem channel) has be a little narcissistic. Like you said, we will probably never really know. All we can do is speculate. It just seems to me that if someone is a narcissist and is not getting the attention that their brain requires to provide the necessary dopamine to maintain an even temperament, that person might just go a little crazy and blame those around them for their lack of success. Granted, Brian was being a bit of a dick when he told her she wasn't going to succeed. There was definitely a better way of going about it (let her figure it out herself, if she was ever going to). I mean, she was paying for the trip. Dude was getting a free ride and seeing some amazing places. Shut your mouth and let crazy lady live in fantasy land for a little while. Relationships are rough. Being the "emotional punching bag" is never easy. Especially when you are already mentally disadvantaged. But, it is part of the job. If he is the one that strangled her, he needs to face the consequences. If it was some random who saw her by herself and took advantage of the situation, then killed her, I hope they find that person so they can face the consequences. As far as a trial is concerned... First they need to find the person who did this. Then they need find the evidence. Considering Gabby (more than likely) died on the 27th and Brian was picked up hitchhiking on the 29th? That's a nice little amount of time to dispose of evidence, imo. Not sure if it's possible to tell from the autopsy the sex, height, weight, etc of the person who did it. Downplay. And claim the day was nice and out of nowhere I just started acting crazy.... Leaving out all the put downs, nit picks, and times they straight up started a physical altercation but ME defending myself was getting "out of hand", just smiling and making everything seem normal while I'm in a straight up panic attack from what was just happening so police take that as proof he was being honest about me just having been just ridiculous so *even after admitting to pushing me* it's determined I'm basically just too emotional so I gotta calm down they leave and I'm just left to hear all about how it was my fault someone called the police. The way Gabby was talking screams red flags for mental/emotional abuse and the fact that the officers just never seem to pick up on these things says a lot to me. You are 100% right. I’ve talked to several police officers in different cities who have blatantly admitted they don’t take domestic violence calls very seriously. Others have said that they get them so often they can become desensitized and just tell themselves there’s nothing they can do. Family and friends of victims often feel the same way. They don’t know what to do or how to help. Or they react similarly to my grandfather who when my mother finally got away from my abusive father he said ‘well I asked you years ago if he was hurting you and you said he wasn’t so I think you’re lying now’. There needs to be more training and more awareness about this and we need to find a way to show people it is never the victims fault because there is always so much victim blaming going on. I wish Gabby could have gotten help from those police officers and I just hope her family can get justice now.

Yesss, same... I just got out of a relationship where the cops straight up heard the gun shot, found the shell casing, seen the bullet hole in the wall, took the gun apart, and told him to leave for the night... He cut me, beat me several times, and I was arrested one time after he went outside, scratched the side of his face, and called the cops after my mom witnessed what all he did to me that day and I never touched him... After watching the domestic footage, I feel enraged. The officers were clearly being biased and agreeing with Brian on everything. Bringing up their own wives and how “hard “ it is on them when a partner has anxiety, saying Gabby is crazy, etc. Nobody even checked Gabby for marks or bruises when she clearly had red marks on her arm and the initial police call said a man hit the woman. They handled this so bad- and I hope they feel quilt. I would not be surprised if they fall into the police statistic that is abusive to their own wives. They completely disregarded Gabby and acted like that type of “disagreement” was okay.

One way to get someone to admit to something is to sympathize with them. The police were saying those things in the hopes that Brian will admit to something he didn't do. Brian locking her out of the van is absolutely cruel. He probably was the person that "diagnosed" Gabby with OCD and he likely mastered the manipulative art of making her feel like she was "going crazy." By using tactics like gaslighting, "moving the goalposts", and projecting & blameshifting, he goaded her into a big, emotional argument. And once he had her hysterical, anxious and in tears, he could simply do a 180° and appear calm and collected because it was all a disgusting game to him. And as someone who has struggled with anxiety and a fear of abandonment at times, I really know how distressing it can be to have someone do something like that to you. I really believe Brian deliberately made their fights extremely intense for Gabby, just so he could do things like lock her out of the van while he remains calm inside. Most people in healthy relationships where they actually love and care for each other understand that it is completely reasonable to need a little time alone after an argument just to cool off and think, but I don't believe for a moment that Brian hadn't calculated the intensity of their arguments in such a way to make Gabby look "crazy" and make him appear like to understanding, calm boyfriend.
@ellespoonies
3 жыл бұрын
I could absolutely believe that one. I was just thinking her reaction 100% didn’t seem as simple as someone who likes things a certain way getting upset over a sandy rug. I think it’s either what you said, or she genuinely does have OCD, but it’s a little more complicated than she let on. If she does, I think she likely got diagnosed privately, but she’s either too afraid to tell anyone because she believes it’ll ruin this pretense of a perfect van life OR she was diagnosed recently and wanted to tell everyone in person, so only Brian knew as of her death. If it was the latter, my theory is Brian would constantly behave as though he didn’t believe her OCD was real, treating it as though she was just finding things to argue about because she hated him or would act like she was going crazy and she never actually told him her preferences and now she’s screaming at him for no reason. With other things, though, anything she would be excited about or aspire to do, like the blog for instance, he would flip on a dime and suddenly he would go on about how she would never be successful in that field with her OCD because of this and that. Regardless which one is true, though, I definitely think that argument was much deeper than just a sandy rug. There was definitely a lot more gaslighting and manipulation on his part before the cops showed up, and the sad thing is we may never know the truth of what happened.

I find this comment very interesting, the way you are able to create this entire narative along with multiple psychocreative diagnoses. I am going to give an alternate opinion as a man who has suffered abuse. The first thing is if you ask any man what he wants in a relationship is a woman this is kind, supportive and peaceful, unless your psychotic you arent purperosly creating drama with your girlfriend and eliciting anger responses from her. You start off by saying hes cruel for locking her out of a van, bearing in mind she is activley hitting and attacking him? As a man we are taught that we dont hit women back, he and her both said in the police bodycam footage that he was trying to keep her calm, he locked himself in the van for her to stop hitting him. His first response was to isolate himself instead of hitting her back. With the cop interview he minimized the situation becuase men automaitaclly blamed when we are physically abused. We are embarresed physically and emtionally hurt. He apologized for only shoving her after she hit him this man was anxiousm trying to calm the situation. He accepted her abuse like most of us men are tuaght to. She admitted she got frustrated and started hitting him and there is NO EXCUSE for puttiong your hands on your partner and then blaming the victim for apparently making you angry. I speak from exporience, my ex-wife slapped me, scratched me, punched me whenever we had a disagreement. One incident, in a disagreement out the kids, my phone was smashed, scratched, she locked the house and hid the keys, stabbed me in my arm, and beat me, while I sat, I know if I call the Police whatever I say will be disregarded, If I defend myself I will be the one in trouble, and I just sat, for 4 hours while the mother of my children decides to hit me until she is satisfied and or tired. I left that night and went to my sister who begged me not to go back to her, while I took time off work to recover and shes still the only person I have told out of embarrasment, or somehow people tend to ask me WHAT DID YOU DO to deserve it., From the bodycam again, I related, he minimzed her abuse by not even mentioning she hit him until the cop asked, he asked for her not be locked up, apoligized for merely pushing her away from him while shes hitting him, he asked for himself to locked in jail instead of her. She was the agressor but she got pulled asside to the comforatble car while he was treated as the agressor and if it was a man he he would be the one with a knee is neck, while she suffered no consequenses for domestuc abuse, and again, him NOT hitting her back and excusing her behavior tells the whole story to me. The fact you could invent all these theories instead of simply believing well a woman could be wrong, women can be abusive, women do hit men when they are angry becuase we are expected to not do anything and just take it. I had to write this knowing no one will care, but I saw that video of a man that was assualted and "did the right thing" by not even defending himself and defending his abuser is just extremlely triggering. I hope for the sake of equality you could flip this, and imagine a woman being hit, running and locking themselves in a van to avoid being hit, then a man jumping through the window and hitting her further and then come online and say she was cruel to lock herself in a van to stop getting hit is cruel. Us men simply dont have rights and are always blamed at every occasion.

34:00 I very much disagree with this and think it is a little toxic to spread this notion. This circumstance is different than the several others where people have been physically harmed by police due to some level mental health affliction. I do agree that, perhaps police aren’t the ones we should be training to focus on mental health in the long run because we already have social workers that we can integrate into those roles with police strictly as back-up, but this is a story of abuse and police not being able to recognize a man gaslighting his girlfriend as well as themselves. We all know that abusers are good at making themselves look innocent to the outside world (i.e., “no way, he was such a nice guy”) so… it’s a different discussion. And saying “it’s just my opinion” when you have such a broad audience doesn’t help, lol.

I agree with Stephanie and disagree with you @Bee S.

Hi Stephanie, I’m a Behaviour support practitioner with a background in mental health and Domestic Violence frontline work. Full disclosure I am also a DV survivor as are far to many people. So I will draw on personal experience and professional knowledge as I reply. When watching the body cam footage what I see is a little different, Gabby is inconsolable this is significant to me and I hope I can explain effectively in this space. This scene to me looks like a result of gaslighting, had this occurred in a house it would be easily hidden however the new living arrangements of van life left their reality on display - when approached Gabby is inconsolable yet immediately declares she’s sorry, she did this, she has OCD, she was distracting him from driving .. What she’s doing is reassuring Brian she knows the rules. For this level of control to be present in a relationship “it is my opinion don’t come for me” that Brian has long used tactics of gaslighting to create a narrative that Gabby is nothing without him, he is bigger, stronger, smarter, wiser …. Once a relationship reaches this level you are dealing with both mental health and DV it’s not about treating the red flags as either/or it’s viewing the behaviour as very literally the mental damage caused by the trauma of Domestic Violence. It is my opinion that Brian was furious after gaining the attention of the police, it is also my opinion that in the hour of footage Brian turns on the charm with police ensuring Gabby knows “I could have had you charged for the scratches to my face” he will want her to know that “she” is responsible for “his” feeling humiliated, he would of reminded her that she’s not ok, she’s getting worse… just as he would make sure she remembers that “even the police were on his side” (truth isn’t important to Brian.. it’s only his version of truth that matters.) He probably threatened to go home.. after all he’s doing all this for her and she has no clue how to really achieve anything… In my opinion he reinforces this by going home ”absolute control” this is why she posts the Instagram pic so out of character while he was back home .. letting Brian know publicly “you really do know what’s best” reeling him back in as without him she believes she is nothing💔

Thank you for your post -this is so important and I’m so glad and grateful you took the time to write this. I’ve been there, ten times over. The manipulation, gaslighting, and crazy-making behavior inflicted upon your psyche is almost preternaturally insane. It twists your brain; you no longer trust your instincts; and you lose all belief in yourself. It degrades & destroys you. But you can present the picture of an ideal relationship, most especially for social media. And there are small blocks of time when things truly do seem great. It gives you hope. But you will always justify and apologize, and you always believe with certainty it’s all your fault. That’s exactly what she was doing - apologizing for him. She was also no doubt driven so crazy by his manipulation that she struck out at him. This is exactly what happened to me. One can never truly know what goes on between two people, but my instinctive reaction while watching the bodycam footage was a deep shock of recognition. I felt like I was looking at myself in the mirror. Hers were tears of someone scared, exhausted and spent, but most importantly, agitated & hyped up from the fight or flight sensation. I could feel that awful adrenaline building in her, and also in myself because it was so unbearably familiar. She was doing the best to protect him. Meanwhile he’s cool and controlled - the rational guy and his hysterical girlfriend. He even joked with the cops as she sat alone in one of the cop cars. And during the car ride with the cop to the motel for him, he’s chatting and laughing with the cop as if nothing has happened. He’s not the one shaking and crying and breaking down. For all of us who have been there - her sobbing, her gestures, her obvious terror - it’s all too familiar. It was so triggering. It broke my heart for her. Thanks so much again for your post. 🙏❤️

@@milicadjordjevic4498 do you know how many women are killed by partners that show little signs beforehand of violent behavior like shanane Watts, lacy Peterson etc. Men like this start the relationship with a ton of love and showering of affection and once you're deep into this committed to each other in some way that's when they start to turn on you and it's small and subtle and you don't even realize it's happening until you're in a dangerous situation. Yes, I'm one of those people that believe there's should be focus on mental health. However, that means training. Or bringing in a mental health professional once that cop realizes there's a mental health issue. Maybe in that case someone trained would have seen any red flags that the cop might have missed (because he is not an expert) that cop thought he was doing something nice that day but no. Shifting towards mental health means more resources for that aspect not just not arresting anyone or thinking everyone is good.

Gabby lied to protect her abuser, this is a tale as old as time. I have done the same and been arrested because of it. I was in a very bad relationship until recently. Towards the end, we could only rely on superficial outside stimuli to get us through the day - whether that was activities or places we went to (what all these sights and the trip were for them) or food/places we went to eat. There's one crazy thing I figured out - because we were hanging by a thin thread, whenever we would go to a restaurant and the food/or service wouldn't be up to one of our's expectations - a fight would ensue, followed by tears, accusations etc. etc. The thing is - we were dependent on these outside stimuli to deliver and make us feel better for the day - and EVERY time it wouldn't happen - psychosis would ensue. Not saying this was the case here, butit crossed my mind when I read about the restaurant incident.

I appreciate your integrity and seriousness when you speak about Gabby, something which many other content creators have not afforded her. (Updated to add; they’ve decided to hold a public funeral. My friends and I will be attending) We are holding a vigil for her this week as well as a friend of mine (who was friends with Gabby) got permission from her family to make ribbons for her family to wear, as well as collecting letters for her family from people who knew her from school. Man I cried after the clip of her laughing at the tent falling in from the rain. Just such a empty sinking feeling in my chest after that, it’s still hard to fathom someone is gone that quick. I feel bad, so bad for her. It’s just not fair.

I do not agree that this is the police focusing on mental. If it is, then they need more training. Especially, after the 911 called said he slapped her. I don’t think that the police were wrong either tho. Hindsight is 2020 and it is easier to judge them now.

If you wanna help Gaby's family watch Kendal Rae's video on the case, she's donating all the revenue to Gabby's parents. Her video is very informative as well.

Wow I thought it's interesting you are from Germany 🇩🇪 does many of your friends know of this story of Gabby there? Ask you and them to prey for Gabby's family, please. I'm a mother of 2 young girls in their 20's I would be out of my mind if something like this happened, so 😥.

So what? I think it’s interesting to know where people who frequent the same KZitem channels as me come from. I, for one, am based in Austria and am also a fan of Stephanie’s.

I really hope he's found alive, because the irony of him living the rest of his life behind bars never allowed to be in "nature" again, sounds like the closest thing to justice that can be served. I have a bad feeling he's probably gone off to a remote woods location to end their own life to avoid justice.

The beautiful “van life” girl you referred to is Jennelle Elaina, and her snakes name is Alfredo! She updates every couple of months! I agree that the whole “van life” trend seemed to take off when she posted her first video that went viral. It is terrible what happened to Gabby, prayers for her family and friends!

I've deliberately avoided most coverage on this, for this reason. Stephanie can always be counted on for the facts, no hyperbole, no exaggerations, just the cold, hard truth. Gabby looked like a beautiful, pure soul, and sadly, Brian came along and didn't show who he really was until he was deeply embedded into her life. I don't think most people understand how hard it can be to "just leave."

Yes, I wouldn’t get into any videos or articles because there is an overwhelming amount of info and social media coverage I needed Stephanie to organize and actually humanize this awful event because it’s been treated on social media as a tik tok trend or like it’s gossip when it’s an actual persons life.

Classic sign of "who has control over who". It irritates the crap out of me 😤 he took her phone, made her believe he would leave her, then asked her to calm down to downplay her emotions. I'm angry he got away. He's probably in Mexico by now.
