This method really deserves a much more in-depth video exploring its many details.

I know - it would be interesting if it could overcome some of the limitations, and work with other roasters. I later tried a "postal scale" that has 1 gram increment and a wider base. Didn't work at all though...

This is such a clever way to roast. Cody from Cody'sLab recently did a similar workaround where instead of doing complicated integrals he just cut out the graph area and weighed it.

Fun experiment, I have been enjoying the Popper as an alternative to my Behmor. The trick is finding a scale that won't shut off during the roast :-)

Maybe periodically tap the scale to keep it operating?

It won’t as long as it senses the vibrations from the popcorn popper

Yes i tap the Units button on mine to keep it going then cycle back to grams - kinda like the other reply suggests

This is such a cool idea. I just tried it on a roast. I had a couple of problems. The first was that my scale was moving around so much while my roasting was running (SR800) I could not use it live to determine how much weight I lost. I decided to stop the machine mid-roast so the scale would settle. Coincidentally, the scale said I had hit my target weight when I stopped it, so I dropped the roast immediately and cooled it in an external cooler. The problem was after the beans were cool, I re-weighed just the beans and the weight loss was significantly less than the live roast value. I am not sure why it was off, but on a 225g batch the weight was off 5.5g. Maybe it was the heat? Not sure, but I am going to try it again on my next roast and let the live roast register 5.5g more than it says. This is just too cool to give up on! Thanks for the idea!

I'm glad you tried it - I didn't have a scale that could accommodate any other roaster ... and it only occurred to be because the Poppo popper (of which the red one was a prototype) was so lightweight. Vibration is an issue, but it actually seemed to work. I am not sure how to refine it but I think it's an interesting concept. -t

@@SweetMariasCoffee I have been thinking about this still. Today I tried a roast with your Colombian Las Mercedes. I Usually roast 225g batches, so I printed a spreadsheet with roasted weight and associated percent weight loss for easy reference while I was at the roaster. I was going for between 11.6% and 12% weight loss, which was between 198-199g according to my chart. This time I tared the scale with the SR800 empty. Then I added the beans and roasted as normal noting I was looking for about 198-199g roasted weight. Right after first crack, I quickly powered off the SR800, let the scale settle. It read 201g. I was looking for 199g, so I powered the roaster back on with the same settings and let it go a little longer (about 30s after first crack). I stopped the machine again, read the weight which was now 199g. Perfect! I then dropped the roast and cooled with an external cooler to arrest any further roasting (hopefully). After cooling, the weight was still 199g so this is very promising. Very good correlation. Also, the color was very good. There was a short period where the SR800 was off, but only for a couple of seconds. I don't really think it will affect the roast much. But now I know I am really close to my targeted weight loss and won't likely need to use the scale next time I roast this coffee. I was using Artisan and captured the profile, so I should just be able to follow it next time I roast this coffee, or make adjustments based on the taste. Can't wait to taste it! I think I will use this method the first time I roast each new lot of coffee to set a baseline.

This is a cool idea. I have the same scale. Made myself a little excel sheet to auto calculate where my ending weight should be. Lets see if this helps a newbie.

I think I had this hairbrain idea at some point but never tried. I'd worry about the WL being too gradual over the time of the roast to register accurately on an inexpensive scale not calibrated for this application. Maybe measure weight at start and then put it on the scale near the end so there isn't too much distortion.
@SweetMariasCoffee

It is a really small increment, and if a few beans are tossed out in the roast, it throws things off. But mainly I was just trying out that "hair brain idea" you had ... what if it could work. I think it could with some further thought and focus...

I like the idea of the variable voltage input. I did see a few beans hop out, taking its' weight with it. Fun to do, not sure it would improve my home roasting. 🙂

I have been planning to put a bluetooth scale under my dog bowl for some time. Now I have to do it! A few grams makes a big difference in roast level.

great idea! I'm now using an SR 540 (which I bought from you), so I'd have to find a scale that would take its weight AND also be accurate to the gram. the 540 is heavy, so I'm not sure there's a scale out there that could handle its weight and be accurate to the gram. Regarding the voltage regulator: I tried that with a popcorn popper, but it didn't work out the way I was hoping because when you dial the voltage down, you get a reduction in both heat output AND fan speed.

did you weigh out the beans once they cooled? i wouldve thought the scale during the roast wouldnt be accurate because the air is moving the beans around and some beans are falling, others are rising, etc at any one point

Thom, just something i wondered looking at Poppo. Would it be possible to mod the poppers to have the watt meter wired to the heat coil but not affect fan speed? Not sure how the internals are wired but this seems like a worthwhile experiment at this price point
@SweetMariasCoffee

That seems like a worthwhile project but would require some electrical knowledge since the watt meter connects to Poppo via Poppos plug.

I've been using Poppo for about three weeks now... I live in Minnesota and have roasted in my house and in my garage (40 degree ambient temperature difference) in the 25+ batches ive done I simply CANNOT get past 4 minutes without first crack and by minutes 5 roasts are going to vienna or french, whatever you want to call it. I've used coffee from central America, brazil and Africa in my attempts. I've tried the extension cord method, turning the machine itself on and off multiple times, nothing seems to work. Is rhe Poppo just too hot too fast🤔? Please @SweetMaria's reply and help me figure this out! I desperately want to roast better coffee with the Poppo😢

Hello. Great question. Yes, Poppo has been known to roast fast and dark but there are additional things you can try, like reducing the batch size and adding a power strip onto the extension cord you are already using. Let us know how it goes.
