Great seeing the care you put into that knife. I love restoring old tools, it takes time and patience. Sometimes slow is better and it calms the mind. Maybe my imagination but that tang mark looked like a wild boar or hog. All the best.

Man that cleaned up well and actually has a snap to it again, great job dude!!! You did great and found a "gem" there for sure my friend. I love that handle, but I am a sucker for wooden handled knives. Have a great upcoming week my friend

That's one beautiful pocket knife, even with a clean up it still shows its history and character. Shame you don't see more like it still being made 😒

Picked some excellent tips, Knife Detector. Whatever works, man! I love WD-40. I'm with Stuart on it most likely being a Puma. I checked Levine’s but it wasn’t very helpful. The wood is most likely cocobolo

Oh, I see, that makes sense because it looks a little different than burl wood. I would be real happy thinking of this knife as a PUMA brand knife, I like that brand :)

@@KnifeDetector not saying it isn’t burl or root wood. Just that it is most likely cocobolo. Numerous woods can be burl. Cocobolo is a very heavy, dense wood, nearly impervious to water and rot and cocobolo burl has been a popular wood for knife handles for a very long time. Cocobolo and ebony were both extremely popular on swell center hunters a hundred years ago. This looks more like cocobolo than ebony.

Cleaning up the rust and grime is great but I'm not a fan of full "restorations." I would do exactly what you are doing. The nicks and gouges on the scales are an important part of its "story," even if you don't know the details of that story. Just imagining how it has been used can be a fun activity.

Nice old knife. Can 1500 grit leave scratches on brass bolsters? I just picked up an old knife today with heavy verdigris on the brass that is very stubborn. I'm wondering if sandpaper should be the next step? So far I have tried Case Paste, baking soda and water, and Hoppe's #9 (which will remove most of it). Still trying...

1500 will leave some fine scratches but not very noticeable, plus you can then move up to 2000.
