Chaap Tilak | Abida Parveen & Rahat Fateh Ali Khan - Abida's is one of the deepest & soul touching voices you'll ever hear. Tajdar-e-Haram | Atif Aslam - so peaceful, so full of joy, Islam ideally encapsulated (in my mind)

This is centuries old technique being passed on and getting refined. You should definitely check out Chaap Tilak by Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen is just a living legend there is no one else like her, she just puts you in trance and touches your soul like no other, she is for female singer in Sufi music what Nusrat was for male singing in Qawali.

You surely know the names of notes like Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, and Si. But in Pakistani and India near by countries classical music notes are "sa re ga ma pa da ni sa",, called Sargam In the end he was hitting the notes SA Re Ga etc etc He's master learning from from his uncle master nusrat fateh ali khan from young age

I saw Rahat first time when he was ten years old and came to Yorkshire in UK accompanying his uncles and father. That was when he was very young but look what he turned out to be. I have seen Nusrat and group many times until 1996 and Rahat a couple of times too but I prefer Sabri Brothers for there faithful adherence to the purity of qawwali music whereas Nusrat and his uncle became pop singers in my opinion.

I was introduced to the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by Jeff Buckley, who had followed him since 1990 and interviewed him in ‘96, a year before his death. Buckley wrote liner notes to one of his albums and recorded one of his songs. Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam) collaborated with Ali Khan in ‘95. I’m glad his nephew is carrying on the tradition.

Great reaction Maggie. I am really enchanted by the music coming out from Pakistan. One of my real favourites is "Mundari" Coke Studio Pakistan by Ustaad Naseer-ud-din Saami. Lyrically minimalistic but man can play with different notes, the likes of which I have yet to witness in other styles of singing anywhere. I was blessed to have spent a decade living in the Middle East and the had opportunity to listen to some really inspirational music from Pakistan and India. I hope you can find some time to give this a listen. Cheers. John.

Well, he does come from a multi-generational family tradition, he probably was trained at home or in a family run studio. . The scat is pure Qawwali, as I understand it as a casual listener. You might want to listen to The Nooran Sisters, who've broken a bunch of rules but sing very traditional qawalli. They were fortunate in having a father who would teach girls. They're also great fun to watch as they've developed an ecstatic dance performed seated cross legged on the floor. Hair does get whipped, you'll love it Maggie.

These are shortened to Sa, Ri (In Carnatic Music) or Re (In Hindustani Classical Music) Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha and Ni. Significance of these seven notes of sur is as follows.
