2023 with Colchester Fire & EMS and the Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Company - In its 170th year of service to the community, Station 28 responded to 2,289 incidents with unit responses totaling 4,215. Colchester Fire & EMS concluded the year with over 68 operationally qualified members and career staff and a membership of over 80.
In addition to answering calls for service, 2023 was a year full of highlights. Colchester members ordered and completed final inspections on four much needed new pieces of apparatus from Pierce Manufacturing, hired additional career staffing to expand coverage hours and increase the number of personnel per shift, as well as having a shift officer. A new Polaris UTV was placed in service, along with a new marine unit. Additionally, Colchester Fire & EMS is expanding service delivery to the community by ordering an additional BLS transport unit, A-728 at Fire Headquarters. This unit is intended to replace an older ambulance, which will be refurbished and utilized as a ready reserve and for events, as to not take a primary response unit offline. A group of our members traveled to Emmitsburg, Maryland to attend officer training at the National Fire Academy. We applied for and were awarded a grant to install exhaust capture systems in both of our fire stations, a testament to the mission of protecting the health and safety of our members. Upgrades were completed at our Schuster Park Training Facility including a new burn box, new lighting, expansion of the ground around the extrication pad, and the beginning stages of a third story for the burn building. Lastly, we successfully underwent a rebranding, with new mission and vision statements, patch, and a defined name for the fire department.
Colchester firefighters and EMS providers also participated in thousands of hours of hands on training. This includes in house training in quarters and at our training facility, course provided by the Connecticut Fire Academy, and third party vendors. Additionally, Colchester members also attended multiple training events throughout the state.
In the future, Colchester Fire & EMS looks forward to...
...continuing to be an integral part of not only our community but the greater fire service community as a whole!
...continuing to provide unmatched training opportunities, bettering ourselves at our craft!
...continuing to provide quality fire suppression and emergency medical services to the citizens and visitors of Colchester and surrounding communities!
