I loved the echos. I have a lot of trouble walking and can't really get out and go places, so I greatly appreciate being able to virtually explore with you. You go to so many interesting places and I feel like we are right there with you. BTW, I really enjoyed seeing those shoe trees in one of your previous videos. When I read "shoe trees" I had no idea what that meant. Duh! It meant shoe trees. Today's excursion was awesome. Keep exploring and we'll keep watching!

I biked all 3 tunnels back in 2009 before the internet made them popular. I was the only person there on the day I visited. It's a spooky feeling being alone in the middle of Sideling Tunnel because you're so far from the ends and it's pitch black as you think about there once being thousands of cars driving through it. There are videos of the tunnels when they were open to traffic.

Hey Post. Enjoy your videos. The parking lot you mentioned at the beginning of the video was not an old toll both but rather an old Howard Johnsons rest stop common on the turnpike in the early days. When they bypassed the tunnel, they relocated the rest stop to the eastern end of the new alignment.

Told myself, before watching, no matter how scary this had gotten, you'd survived. Mud dams cleared, water drained, more clogs defeated! Dark tunnel. Shrinking ceiling. Spider friends (?). Bats. Footsteps around you??? You'd. Kept. Walking? 😱 Interesting artwork, the woman's picture on the wall was spooky. 👀 You're BOTH brave! Great train video! Sad that Cabooses have been retired. They'd been the "finish" of each train. Wonder if any boxcars ever get loose and an Engineer pulls into the station missing part of the train? No need to count hundreds of boxcars when there's a caboose at the end. 🤷♀️ A rr story, from Gmpa's Northern Pacific job, 1950's: He and his crew had reported to work one morning, and the string of empty boxcars they'd been supposed to move down the track were all gone. Strong winds had been blamed for moving them, without an engine, blocks away. Wonder what ppl had thought when those boxcars had gone by, in the middle of the night? Beautiful scenery, great echoes! Thanks for a (sometimes tense) video adventure! 🖖

How do the bats in the darkest depths of the tunnel know when it’s night time? Do they have little bat clocks? Also, you need to wrap a mannequin in black bags and tape and put in the tunnel with a trail camera to see peoples reactions to the find.
@bluecat0132

Bats go into a kind of hibernation called extended torpor. They can still wake up, but they can slow everything down, don't need to eat or drink for months if needed. Never assume a bat is dead just because it's not moving. If it couldn't get out from where it is, it might just be in that state.
@watershed44

@@bluecat0132 Also most importantly bats are common carriers of RABIES, NEVER approach, or touch bats, and if you are bitten by one if the bat is able to be captured easily put in in a container and call your local animal control so they can test for rabies virus, if not you will probably have to get the rabies vaccine just in case, there is NO cure and if untreated you WILL probably die a painful death.

Pretty Cool video, but the bats were the best part. I love them but I also know that if they are woken during the winter they are likely to die. Who's the woman with him? Some points. I worked in Heavy Industry for 30 years. 8 of those years in safety. In the Mill, so to speak, corrosion takes its toll. We had handrail with signs on it not to lean on it. Sounds stupid, most of it was fine, but over years, a few people leaned in the handrail, it gave way, and they died or were seriously injured. In an abandoned facility, all bets are off, you can't step on something to assess if it's intact, as the collapse may occur suddenly, and you may be killed. Get cleats for your boots, for walking on ice, and even then, walk carefully. When you took the ice dams out of culverts, with an Axe equipped with a point on the opposite side, get a leather or synthetic cover for it, so if you fall on it you won't be injured or killed. Don't let the young lady trail behind, you're hearing footsteps, why let her be separated. Going up the steps, let her go first, if she falls you can stop her. Pairing with someone for safety is a great idea. But be close enough together to serve as the eyes for each other. Videoing distracts, it's not uncommon for a news videographer to have a person that just watches for traffic and hazards. There were holes in the floor, one bad step can be painful or disabling. Great show, but don't take chances for views, too many people lose out that way.
