I never use either. If it's cold enough to have a problem starting, I plug them in. On all but the coldest days one hour of block heater makes them start just like it's summertime. Even when it gets down near zero two hours of block heater and they all start right up. I have my block heater receptacles on a timer

That's a great video! I have a 335 Cummins I did a cold start video on and mine supposed to have been rebuilt but it sure starts hard when it's cold out

My old big cam 400 would fire right off when it was in the low 30s. Never even hesitated, took all of the fun out of cold starts. The guy that has it now is in Colorado, he said it fires right up all winter, no heater or ether.

MS Earthworks hardest starting engine I’ve owned. I think I set the timing at the latest setting for a 350, might have been a mistake.

Typical small cam cummins! Run awesome once there is a little fire in the hole! Love your little kW!

Yeah it's normal from what I have read, hasn't changed since I rebuilt it. I have an either injector that gets it going. I like it,cheap it fix!

I've got a '75 A model. It's a single screw like yours, but I have a 5 yard dump body on it. Might be the cutest little dump truck in America! It has the 350 small cam also. When I leave the block heater plugged in, it doesn't matter how cold it is outside, she'll light right off in a jiffy, but if I forget to plug it in the night before or if I just wasn't planning to drive it the next day, it takes a snort of the huffing gas to get it lit off. I don't like long starter crank bursts. Seems like it's hard on parts and batteries. I like 'em to fire off within the first 10 to 15 seconds and be done with it. Keep on truckin', Driver!

Yeah I have an ether injector with push button for those “cold” 40 degree starts! Lol. Would love to see your truck, a’s are my favorite. Thanks for watching

Man I would hate to try and start that thing when it's 20 degrees out. Awesome video

Awesome truck! Have you done a walk-around video of it? So I have 2 questions for you: Do you know it these engines started easier when they were new? Or did they always need ether? And do they come from the factory with the ether injection? Thanks!
@Digginok

Thanks. I may have an old video of a walk around. The reason they start hard is the timing is pretty much fixed, I set this one to a later timing when I rebuilt it. This engine actually had a hand pump in the dash and a glow plug in the intake manifold, you would warm the glow plug and then start pumping fuel to make a fire in the intake, then crank it up. I never tried using it but I still have all the parts to it. I added the ether injection for those days that Don’t have it plugged in. Thanks for watching

It has a lot to do with the duration of the cam profile on small cam cummins, even setting them with fuel timing tool won't assure easy starts, just the nature of the beast!

Surprised it started that hard for how warm it is. How many miles are on it?

+Digginok maybe 500000 since total rebuild. Doesn’t use oil and has good compression, I think the timing is set too late.

I’m not exactly sure, probably around 1 million. I figured I have about 500000 on it since I rebuilt the engine.

Ever try giving it any throttle?

+Gearhead yes but it doesn’t help, a small sniff of either works real good though.

Surprising it doesn’t. Especially since it’s a mechanical pump. I’d love to see you try both holding it down and pumping it. Just out of curiosity!

+Gearhead I have flooded it before by giving it throttle, not sure I want to do that again.

Now I didn’t think you could actually flood a diesel by pumping it. I’d just love to hear how differently it starts when pumping it.

On my Cummins n14 it won’t fire off unless I pump the throttle a lot
