Don't forget to put the clutch in when you want to fire her up. I drove a 1989 gmc school bus with the same motor my first year of bus driving. Great old beasts.

Do you put the clutch in to make sure it does not get away on you? Or to make it easier for the motor to start? Curious. Must have been fun driving that bus around. That thing was probably maintained so well because it was a school bus. I am sure it is out on the road somewhere. Beast of a motor....👍

@@fastflo1 it helps it start easier. Atleast it did on my bus. My bus was taken care of with pride an older lady drove it for our company before it was passed down too me when i was hired. We were both good at standard, so it only ever had 2 clutches in its life span of 30 years. It was retired during my second school year with the company, because of its age. I hated the automatics at first and missed my standard. My 89 was sold to an older couple who converted it to a motor home.

@@jacktfowler246 I can see that it would make it easier . That Tranny is huge . So without spinning it I bet it is a lot easier on the starter and battery. I will do that from now on. Thanks for remind me what a beast it is. Well that is a really cool story to hear about the bus. I bet you miss driving that bus. I was just cruising the boom truck down the freeway the other day and I had about 1/8 of the throttle on and it was just cruising like nothing . Purring like a kitten . Amazing how smooth they drive for something that big .

@@fastflo1 take good care of her and she will take good care of you. I'm from ontario Canada and my old 89 never let me down on the coldest winter day. She'd fire right up and come to life when I'd warm her up for the morning school run. I always felt much more in control with a standard in really snowy weather. After the gmc I was switched to an international that was automatic and veerrry slow! It was disel and hated the cold. It didn't like snow either even with the duelys on the rear. Take care of that old truck and she'll take good care of you.

She liked the choke and gas. She didn't really fire off until you gave it lots of pumps of the gas pedal. I have '81 GMC K1500, it loves choke and lots of gas too...LOL!

Ya ! She likes a few pumps and the choke on the cold starts . I love the manual choke too . She always fires up though never need starting fluid . The 81 sounds the Same way 👍🏻

How long does it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days?
@fastflo1
Ай бұрын
On cold mornings it takes a few cranks normally. If I drive it every day it fires up pretty quick warm or cold out. But if I let it sit for a few weeks it is harder to start. It takes at least a few good cranks .

you happen to know how to adjust valves on that

Sure. It is the same for big block and small blocks. Hydraulic lifters. I start on #1 tdc. And get the play out of the rocker, move the pushrod up and down until no play, then tighten 1/2 turn on the intake and exhaust. The firing order will start on the driver side front by the headlight. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The odd number cylinders is on the driver side and the even ones on the passenger side starting with 2 in the front by the headlight. So just start on number 1 and then rotate the crankshaft and look at my next cylinder coming up. Cam should be on the flat parts. Then do them all, and that is about it. Let me know how it goes.

@@cmack864 nice….Sounds like a great Truck you have. Must be nice with the TBI. I have heard lots of good things about the 366. The old guy I got the truck from had 3 other dump trucks with the 366. He said it is the his favorite motor and the toughest he has ran in his life . He only buys the 366 motors. Dude was about 75 years old. But I believe him . This on has under 100k and it’s a beast. I love it . A real workhorse 👍🏻
