My glow plug relay went out on my CUCV so I installed a manual glow plug switch. This works great for temps below freezing. Once it hits -20, you will need a block heater or oil pan heater

As soon as the glow plug light goes out hit the starter. That’s when the most heat is in the pre combustion chamber. I used to do this before I put a manual override button in on my 85. Living in wyoming it gets pretty cold in the winter but my old 85 fired up every time no problem.

Mine usually takes off in one cycle no matter how cold it is. I usually plug it in when it gets down in the 20s, just makes it easier on the starter and everything. Plugged in it starts as good as it does in the summer.

There is a cold start sensor on the passenger side of the block at the rear of the engine. Make sure it's connected and functioning. It controls the cold start fuel relay in the injector pump. Check it.

Then why did those motors have so hard of a time starting then my best friend owned one it was like an 80 I don't know actually I think it was a 78 GMC maybe I might be wrong but I had a 6.2 diesel in it and I could walk outside cold as a mother hit that key the first time and she pop right over every time deep snow didn't matter fire over

Don't do the count between cycles, you just let the plugs cool down again and that wastes power meaning you need more cycles. Just click it off and back on again for the next cycle :-) Happy motoring!

You wait a couple seconds after pre-glowing, before pre-glowing again? I never do that, just twice directly after each other, once the light goes off. Then after the second pre-glowing it should fire up immediately.

Did these trucks have a tach option for the diesels? Seen gas square bodies with them, but never a diesel so far.
@SuperNovadose

That's a great question . Far as I know the 6.2 didn't come with a tachometer but there is a way you can . If you have a diesel alternator with a tach outlet just hook it up and that's it

@@SuperNovadose Seems the military square(?) has a tach if my research is right. Goes up to 4000 revs I think, but that's also a 24 volt electrical system if I remember right too. Not sure if that would make any difference or not. Think the tach also has the fuel gauge in it too.

Cycling your glow plugs is fine, but taking time between them makes no sense, all the heated air cools back down in between the long pauses so you never get anything but a single cycle.

There's a temp sensor located on the passenger side of the engine what happens the temp sensor will read the engine temperature incorrectly not activating the the glow plug controller You can either replace that temp sensor which would probably be the cheapest way to doing it or put a manual glow plug controller in the cab of the truck and you have full control of your glow plugs
