Admittedly it could very well be because it didn't get the coverage in the UK that it did in the States but the fact I had never heard of the racial violence at Robeson's concert in New York really doesn't sit right. Very much like Tulsa, it's indicative of a selective teaching of history. Credit to this series for calling it down the middle.

History class has to be selective. We need room in our day for math, english, and science class, etc. What you mean to say is that YOU would select different events to teach. Personally, I'd want to learn about Columbus and the American Revolution, not every bad thing that happened to some group of minorities; events that effected most people, not just members of 10% of our population. As a kid on the subway I watched 3 young black guys stomp an 80 year old white man to death for fun; should we all be forced to learn about that?

Jim Schreiber - I know what you mean: I grew up in a Greece reeling from a repressive military dictatorship and the aftermath of a catastrophic civil war (because...you know...WWII just wasn’t bloody enough for us). These cast a long shadow. Political tensions ran high, strife was commonplace, and ridiculous rhetoric was the order of the day: half my family were dyed-in-the wool ‘commies’, and the other half were incorrigible ultra-right nationalist monarchists (several of whom were serving Army officers), so you can imagine what dinners and holidays with the extended family were like...There were no moderates at all, apart from my poor Uncle Xenophon, a quiet, pragmatic civil engineer with liberal democratic leanings. He was constantly brow-beaten for his balanced approach to things, but unperturbed, he would observe the incessant quarrels of his obstreperous kin with Stoic indifference. The rhetorical flourishes of the Marxists consisted of what was then called, “wooden language” (‘ξύλινη γλώσσα’ - ‘xyline glossa’) - an array of formulaic, ready-to-serve phrases and platitudes which were almost as meaningless as the vacuous apophthegms loved by the conservatives. In other words, no common sense, no pretence at objectivity, no originality, and - God forbid!- no substance at all, from either side...
