I'm a bit late getting to this one, but like your other paintings, it's a beauty! Thank you for taking the time to do these demos, Kim!

Hello Kim: thanks for another great video. You make it look easy, have worked a few pieces of my own and realize there is more to this than can be shown. After years of working with encaustic, the one thing that I need to get straight is the time between cold wax layers to allow for the correct amount of drying. One can get a very muddy piece by trying to work in colours too soon. Have also realized that I need to leave pieces outside to dry as I have found that the fumes are causing headaches. Maybe an aspect to remember for those who are affected by the fumes from the solvents. Love, love, love the results when it is done right. You do it right! Certainly an exercise in developing patience. Lynda from Victoria, B.C., Canada

Hi Lynda! Thanks for watching! Yes, I do know what you're saying about muddying the colors. I have found over time just how much pressure to apply to layers to keep from picking up underlying paint. Also some tools are better for blending (squeegee) and while others (ex. Palette knife. Sponges, and scrapers) are better for applying and/or moving paint around. Again, you need to use a very light hand if you want to keep colors from blending. If you watch this video closely, you'll see that I'm using a palette knife to apply paint and almost exclusively the squeegee and getting varying effects just by changes in pressure and angle of the squeegee. It does take practice to get exactly the look you want. I completed this painting in one 45 minute session, so it can be done without drying time. I'm fortunate in that the fumes never seem to bother me and my studio is well away from my living space, but good warning for those that are sensitive.

francine knittel Thanks Francine! More or less the cold wax will be like a varnish if added as a finishing layer when your painting is 100% dry. I’m not sure what you’re going for, but I’m doubtful it will look the same as a painting created with wet oils and cold wax. Still, it’s a popular finish for acrylics. Happy painting!

Kim great video. Have you ever worked on clayboard? It's quite fun how fast it absorbs oil in cold wax.

love your work and demo is clear and very helpful q,,how long does it take to dry??
@KimSobat

marie-helene fontaine Thank you! It depends on how thickly the paint/cold wax is applied, but usually only takes a couple days to be dry to the touch. It will need around a week to 10 days to frame, and I would suggest at least two weeks before attempting to pack and ship. Hope that helps!

edward johnson Hi Edward! No, I use cold wax. It doesn't require any heating like encaustics. I talk about it in my "Getting Started with Cold Wax" video here on You Tube. Hope you'll check it out and thanks for watching!

Appreciate the humility in the title, given the magnificence of the composition and your color consciousness. I might've called it something more (kitchly) heroic, like 'Phosphenes'. 'Check Please' is way mo-beta.

A. X Thanks so much! I like it when a title comes to me on the fly. The more I stew over the title, the more pretentious and less relatable it becomes 😜🔬
