Colin Bean was born in Wigan on the 15th April 1926, he was a life member of the British Actors Equity. A graduate of the Northern Theatre School (which was based at the Bradford Civic Playhouse in the 1940s -50s) directed by Esme Church of the Old Vioc and Rudolph Laban and the actors Church Union.
Widely experienced in theatre, radio and TV work (including nine years as Private Sponge in Dad's Army) he has appeared in everything from classical drama to classic pantomime - noted for many years as a "Dame" of no mean repute - In touring theatre and repertory company all over the British Isles.
He was also a honorary director of Palaver productions (Edinburgh Festival 1994-1995
From 1978 until 1983 Colin was an actor / player director with the Octagon Theatre in Bolton. he had also performed in many radio plays and documentaries for BBC Radio 4 from New Broadcasting House, Manchester.
During 1973/74 he was director and co-founder (with John D. Slater) of the Bijou Theatres parent company, Bridgeman Productions in Wigan.
From 1993 until it ended in 2001 he was a regular reader for the BBC Radio North's 'Write Now' programme.
In 2002 he was elected as the Hon. President of the Making Waves Radio Group.
Colin Bean died in his home town of Wigan on the 20th June 2009
