One of the most underrated songs. The original version with full 80's orchestration didn't do it justice. Once Colin started doing an acoustic version, post-Men At Work, it blossomed. Hauntingly beautiful.

I disagree that one is better than the other - I will listen to either quite happily - most of my memories are of the original version anyway, since I was there at the time. The original was a cut above everything else in the mid-80s soundscape; and the latter day acoustic direction brings out different qualities in the song which just to me accentuates the fact that a great song is a great song. Now for a rockabilly version....

Colin has played this song literally thousands of times. I’ve heard every acoustic version imaginable, starting with the one from scrubs. when he plays, live at the lab with Telefunken acoustic, it’s the culmination of everything…..including arrangements, and the maturation of his voice. That makes this the best version of overkill, IMHO.

He has changed how he plays this song over the years. For some reason, he's gone to double drop D tuning. But, it seems he's used a capo here? Strange. I love the standard tuning in E version where he uses power chords in E and lets the guitar really ring! I cannot sing that 3rd verse an octave higher, like he does... But, it's still a beautiful song. I love it!

Is it me or does this performance have some emotional subtext. The beginning sounds, I don’t know, ‘tired?’ Like he’s almost saying ‘Ugh, not this song again…’ the middle is a burst of energy, almost a surge of defiant energy to say he would give it his all whether he’s happy about it or not. Then, in the end, he’s somber and introspective, like the end of the song reminds him that whether he’s glad to still be doing this song or not, all things end. Or I’m having trouble sleeping at 2:45AM and thinking weird stuff.
