Tom Cruise absolutely nails it. Shoots exactly like his character, and highly trained and skilled assassin, is supposed to shoot. Every movement is perfect. However, Mark Ruffalo who plays a detective in the film, completely phones ihis performance in. Just a few short scenes after Tom Cruise delivers the finest example of proper gun handling skills every filmed, Mark Ruffalo clears an apartment gangster style. Police academies and law enforcement agencies have set proceedures and techniques for clearing a room, and for how they hold their weapons during those proceedures. Mark Ruffalo followed none of them. It was so disappointing to see Tom Cruise put so much hard work into getting every detail perfect one moment, and Mark Ruffalo pay so little attention to the details the next. Don't get me wrong, Mark can act. But he needs to take a page from Tom's book and truly study what it means to live in his character's world...especially when it comes to scenes that involve a gun. So close guys...but not perfect.

+Leo Nidas That's an extremely common mistake action movie goons make, holding a gun inches away from a person's face; there must be a thousand Krav Maga, CQC , Judo, Aïkido or whatnot holds to get away from such position. In that scene I guess you could argue that the goon only wanted Vincent's wallet and planned to use his gun as a mere threat (it's downtown, someone could hear gunshots, he's on foot, etc.)

Sino Deutsch It's fun, but certainly not better than Collateral. The latter wins in terms of cool factor AND realism, and it bothered me how much John Wick was CGI'd. Mann's authentic gunplay is always unparalleled. And there's just so much more going on in his action scenes, emotionally and intellectually. Nothing against John Wick, but it was your run of the mill "kill everything" revenge flick. The action scenes in Collateral have more substance built beneath them.

because it's paced weird, has weird scene transitions, and the chemistry between cruise and fox seems extremely forced and awkward in multiple scenes, not enough characters to keep the run time interesting, not to mention the whole movie feels like it's filmed with some sort of old soap opera camera making the quality of the entire film feel pretty cheap. I think cruises gunwork and his "hey homie, is that my briefcase? " line were great, but I do not think for one second this movie is underrated. I always found it weird how ppl can really dig a person's work but talk down on their lineage. I did a shooting course in Texas when I was literally 19yrs old and I was taught how to work sig sauer pistols, trimmed brownings & hecklers. Every day for a month was a camp. In early 2001 it was wonderful. Im Australian btw.

What a great way to earn money. A lot of money. :-) Tom Cruise is that type of guy, who rocks in everything he tries. At least this is my feeling from him. Nice job.

Tom Cruise is crazy. I got nothing against the guy but the only time I find him believable is when he's playing an asshole. He was fucking bad ass in this movie.

most people don't understand how truly deep this film really is. Michael Mann is one of the greatest directors of our era. arguably one of the best of all time. he's easily in my top 5

Tom got the fun role. Meanwhile, Jamie Fox spent 3 months driving a Taxi Cab in order to prepare for his role. Only thing he developed was chronic depression.

@smiley19881999 yeah!! that's a joke! Tom Cruise should have been at least nominated for this role... and what about Micheal Caine winning best supporting actor for The Cider House Rules over tom cruise in Magnolia?? Now that was a scandal...

This movie is Great.. Classic and Original.. Tom Cruise is also a highly skilled actor. Been watching MI series and all of them were amazing.. especially when it comes to Tacticals.. Cruise should be included in The Expendables series.. what you fellas think?

Michael Mann is the best: Thief with Jimmy Caan is still his best work. Collateral & Heat are the best also. And of course Miami Vice.

if they didnt kill off vincent they actually laid the groundwork for what john wick is today. eventhough im a fan of keanu reeves, and he does a brilliant job, tom cruise as vincent fits the role of the icecold professional killer better than him

Man people talking about John wick, and don’t get me wrong Keanu Reeves, is Great and Trained diligent for that role with Taran Tactical, but don’t sleep on Tom Cruise Collateral was before it’s time, and still is Awesome, it’s great to see all the behind the scenes to see what is put into a movie more less a character, Great work Big Cruise 👍🏾😀😀😀

@lazerbeak2125 I agree. He isn't really underrated though, I do think he should have more award noms/wins. I've always loved Tom Cruise and I have seriously enjoyed every single movie that I've seen him in and I love that he has done such a variety of movies/roles. People give him a bad rap just because of his personal life which is annoying because MOST actors out there have probably done things in their life that people wouldn't like but it's their life and who cares but he is a GREAT actor.

One of Tom's most underrated/unseen roles. He killed it beyond description...so did Foxx...this movie in general is a total gem that almost no one knows about. Michael Mann is the mann!

That's why one of the basic rules of safety is being sure of your target and everything behind it. You should be shooting at a proper target with some form of backstop if you had guns, not just pointing it up and fire away.

Michael Mann is such a truly excellent director. The films he's made over the last two decades I've been a parade of masterpieces. He doesn't get as much brand recognition as some of the pop culture blockbusters, but his aesthetic is truly a joy to experience

yeah, vincent was a brilliant character; definitely my favorite cruise performance. the scene in which he murders those two punk robbers who have no idea they've just intimidated an innocent for the last time is a classic. i know a few persian "gangsters" who pull that shit, and i sincerely hope that happens to.

Collateral was shot in 2003. It’s been 20 years. Not only the movie is still spectacular but Tom Cruise is still fantastic also in Top Gun Maverick. It’s obvious the Hollywood agenda for him never having received an Oscar
