I don't about the 1943D copper penny, but there are some very valuable '43 coppers. The story has it that all of the pennies minted in '43 were supposed to be steel. However a few were minted out of copper and circulated. I don't know how many were minted, but I guess the number is low enough to make the 1943 copper one of the most valuable and sought after pennies by collectors. So you could actually be sitting on a gold mine.

In theory, can't you put a clear household oil or even a clear gun oil like Hoppes on the cleaned steel penny before putting it into a display case? It keeps rust off everything else you use it on.

I have a three piece set of 43s. One from each mint D, P and S, that my wife’s grandmother purchased for face value shortly after WW2 because she said they were “Sooooo pretty.” She found a little container and a piece of white cardboard and cut it to fit the container and then cut the circles that cut the pennies. They have been in that container since 1944 having never been opened and touched, well since I dug them out and did just that, by anybody. When I first saw them 15 years ago they were brilliant uncirculated condition. Well apparently where they were stored for the last 10 years was in a jewelry box iiiinnnn.........the master bathroom. 😩 Yup. Steamy baths and showers the last 10 years. Each one has a spot on them about 15 percent of the surface size of, not rust, yet, the beginnings of what would be rust if left unchecked. So they are “blemished” on the obverse BUT it’s superficial. If not for those spots they’re DEFINITELY MS70 no doubt! I’m wondering if PCGS, or someone of the like, had the ability to remove this. If you would like to see how they would look having never been circulated and encapsulated ALMOST perfectly I’ll give you one of my email addresses and send you pics.

The redbook guide to coins has the 1943P as 8 dollars in MS65, 1943D as 10 dollars in MS65 and the 1943S as 20.00 in MS65. It does not list them in grades above that. If yours are at least MS65 thats the value of them. I'd keep them sealed and hand them down from generation to generation as part of your collection personally.

Unless they have no damage, aren't replated or have fingerprints, they aren't really going to be worth that much to be honest. If you have any you think are really nice, take them to a coin shop you trust or that has good reviews and ask if they would submit them for grading if it was their coin. Most of the time on steel cents, the answer is no unless they would get like an ms67 which is pretty rare. I have a few that would have qualified except for spots or fingerprints that would detract from the grade to make it not worth the time and money necessary to have them graded.
