1996. I was 13 years old and I was begging my dad all year for one. He kept saying no. Birthday came around, no Saturn. Then it was Christmas of 96 and not a single gift was wrapped in the shape of a video game console box. I knew I wasn't going get it and I was at peace with it. I still had my Genesis to keep my company. Then I get a gift that's in the shape of a shoebox. Maybe it was Airwalks and that would kinda make up for it. I tear it open and it's old pair of shoes my dad use to wear. There was a note that said "put these on and walk to the hall closet". I didn't put them on but I went to the hall closet and there was a wrapped gift in the shape of console box. Could it be what I wanted and begged for all year?? There was a note that said something like "This MEGA gift is out of this world" and my dad kept trying to get me to guess and would say "MEGA... Out of this world...." I was so excited I couldn't respond and I tore that paper off so fast and there it was. My Sega Saturn. Then another gift that I unwrapped and it was the 3 free games with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighting 2, and Daytona USA. I also got another game called Solar Eclipse. I remember liking that game a lot as a kid, but playing it now... meh haha. Even though I don't have it on video, for as long as I live I will always remember that Christmas and will be grateful towards my dad for making a fun game out of it because he knew how badly I wanted it. You're very lucky your dad recorded a lot of your childhood. I wish I had that.

Yes very lucky. We never had the money for a camcorder (and so my dreams of being a stop motion animator went down the drain). In my whole childhood, there were only two videos of me, recorded by the school. My mum lost one of them, and the other one she left in the cellar to go mouldy and unplayable. Crazy to think how different it is now that everyone has a videocamera in their pocket and can record everything.

Out of anyone on KZitem, you and your dad have changed my mind about the Saturn the most. I was a Sega kid through and through, but we didn't have much money and after my dad got burned on the 32X it was over. And at that point with 3d graphics the PlayStation was cheaper and did it slightly better. What I didn't know about was the awesome 2D games and imports that the Saturn had. Once again I have missed the boat as the Saturn and it's games are too rich for my blood. Great video Tyler.

You can still get a saturn, mod it, and experience the games through stuff like ODEs etc
@leeartlee915

Yeah, ODEs and emulation is your friend. It’s not 2007 anymore, you don’t need to have the actual physical games to experience these retro systems. I don’t even use my old collection anymore since they take up too much space (and buying new software is a joke). Do a little research and you’ll be set up for life.

@@adewilson132 Optical Drive Emulator. It's hardware that emulates as an optical drive, but take MicroSD cards, SD cards, or even Hard drive as storage to read instead of CDs. Sega Saturn is my second favorite console of all time, first is the SNES. I loved the Saturn, I had so many games for it, the 3D controller, arcade stick, racing wheel, light guns for Virua Cop 1 & 2, Nights christmas sampler, so much more and I freaking sold it all along time ago on ebay for extra cash, kicking myself to this day for it too. I really wanted a Saturn when I was a kid, but never ended up getting one since I chose to wait for the N64. It wasn't until I was in college when I finally got a Saturn and I realized I definitely missed out. However it was't until about a decade ago when I discovered the Japanese library and definitely felt like I missed out. It's amazing you got to experience both libraries of games when you were a kid when it was all brand new, truly special. Anytime I see one of your videos about Saturn I eventually dig mine up and play it. Thanks for keeping this forgotten golden age of 2D/semi-2D gaming alive!

If Sega would of reduced the sticker price by $100, included the original JPN Saturn controller, improved it's 3D Engine to match PS1's, Canned the 'surprise' out of nowhere store launch, brought over more of it's incredible line up of 2D titles from Japan, and maybe kept the original Saturn logo and gold label art work, it may of very well been able to go toe to toe with PS1. Looking back, Astal was the star of the show in my eyes, based on what was released in NA. Unfortunately for me, i never got into importing, and winded up selling my Saturn a few months after PS1 released.

Man I LOVED the Saturn! Even before the launch, I traded in a bunch of old SNES and Genesis games to FuncoLand to earn enough store credit so that I could make sure that I would pick one up on launch day. I had expected to pick it up in September but I was shocked (and delighted) to learn that it came out several months early. That meant that I got an entire Summer vacation to play and enjoy my new Saturn console, which I got along with Clockwork Knight, Bug, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, and Panzer Dragoon. I still have my Saturn to this very day and keep it hooked up, though I have since modded it to play games off an SD card. One thing's for sure, from 1995 to 1998 I was team Saturn all the way! Thanks for the awesome video, it was both touching and nostalgic as usual.

I remember I had a really hard time choosing between the Saturn and Playstation consoles. I could only afford one but I remember that being one of the toughest choices I had to make for a generation. Had the Genesis and loved it but ended up going with the Playstation. Twisted Metal and Crash kinda won me over but it wasn't easy. I'd like to add after seeing the Metal Slug segment of your video, my uncle would always buy me one game for my birthday and sometimes before he even left for the night I'd already have beaten the game he bought for me and he'd always get bent out of shape about it. I'd try and tell him I'd play this a million times over, back then games weren't very long at all and were meant to be replayed over and over again but he never got that lol. He'd pick out the hardest games on purpose for me just because they'd last longer. I still remember when he got me Metal Mech on the NES and Shadow of the Ninja, some really tough ones. Remember playing Metal Mech and struggling with it and my dad seen that and he said "It's not hard, you just gotta figure it out" and I sat with him on the couch and he was reading over the instruction manual with me and my mom took a picture. Mom has it in her photo album still. Never forget that.

Hey, as soon as a new vid is uploaded i'm here!! - I know this is mainly based on your retro "gaming" life but the channel doesn't specifically say so, and I honestly feel you could (should) upload everything from your past. People here just love to see you and your family, all the fun & love that's clearly shown from your mom, dad, dogs etc. I think everyone watching would love to see more of what we already see, it doesn't have to be game related. Don't get me wrong, I love the gaming aspect which is why I found this channel but I've grown to love everything about it! Videos which slightly deviate from gaming when you show longer videos don't remove any love or magic from the video and keep me tuned in. People are now here for you, the young you, your amazing dad and his humor. I honestly think you should share all your footage. It's now almost like watching an episode of "The Goldbergs", meaning the footage could be about anything, we just want to reminisce by seeing the 90's play out through you! The Birthdat eposide shows a large portion of Nurf gun footage which isn't technically gaming but so fun to watch none the less. I'd watch the episode without the gaming aspect.- Great channel, love it. Sporting "My Retro life" sticker in my room :) - Would love to hear what you think?

Awesome video man. I loved the Saturn Japanese imports and I think if Sega had brought a lot of those games over from Japan that the console would have lived longer. Do you still have that Sega Kiosk? That's incredible! Your dad was an awesome hunter of games.

Holy moly. Just got here as you uploaded it! Love your videos, dude! I love sitting here, smoking a spliff and binging your videos. I know people don't tend to smoke but I'm just saying I love it. Got a whole little ritual when I sit down to watch KZitem and it's been awesome to discover your channel in recent times.

Funny Congo was advertised on the back of the box, it ended up being cancelled on the Saturn. Though an almost complete build was leaked a few years ago.

I don't know if you've read the book "Console Wars" but it's a great read of Sega vs Nintendo from the late 80's till the Saturn's release, I was never a Sega fanboy, but after reading the book I have a lot more appreciation for Sega and all they went through at that time, I highly recommend it

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I always wanted a Saturn. I had a PlayStation growing up but decided to get a white Japanese Saturn a few years ago. My favorite games for it are X-Men vs Street Fighter, Gunbird, and Assault Suit Leynos 2 (which is super underrated and so much fun).

Before you made this channel, the most Sega Saturn related content was Project COE. Underrated youtube channel, it was that channel that made me want a Sega Saturn when i was a teen in 2010s. Of course, I didn't have moolah. So it took a while till now. Now that you released this video, you and Project COE made me get one. Man, oh man... Saturn goodness 😂

When everyone else in Junior High had Playstation, N64, or Dreamcast, Me and one other person had Saturn. I played so much Virtua Cop 2, I knew where the enemies would appear before they were on screen.
