Colleen!! I really hope you see this comment! I'm a zoologist (aspiring conservation ecologist) in South Africa and this conversation got me sooo passionate to talk to you about how we know a species is endangered etc. So basically there are different types of extinctions. Some species are functionally extinct meaning there aren't enought individuals of a species in an ecosystem to do the function they naturally provide. Other species or populations can be locally extinct meaning they were found in this one area but are completely gone now, but can have other populations in other areas. We also then have the typical extinction people know of where the species is completely gone and theres no more individuals left. Extinctions like functional extinctions are the reason why in some cases we find natural thriving populations of a species in an area once thought extinct. On the note of how we know how many animals or individuals of a species there is; some scientists study species and know all about their physiology and behaviour and movements so we can determine and model where this species will be able to survive and live. Sometimes its not perfect. Some species we know really well and others not so much so it differs a lot. Birds are one group that are probably the most well studied organism. A lot of the ocean unexplored is the deep ocean to deep for us to explore and study. These areas have weird looking simple organisms mostly, so it's not typically animals like dolphins that need to come up for air so they live in higher levels of the ocean ecosystem. This is a VERY simple and basic explanation and I'd love to answer more questions you have! Hope this helps to clarify our methods a bit❤

About the forgetting thing, its actually the opposite of a déjà vu: Jamais vu, which in French means “never seen,” is a phenomenon many people may not have heard of. However, almost everyone has experienced it in their lives. Have you ever suddenly looked at a word that you write frequently and questioned whether you spelled it correctly, as if you we seeing it for the first time?

Dolphins are next in consciousness to humans and given that humans are not evil by nature * and knowing about the contamination of the ocean wouldn’t be surprised if their environment effects their behavior and causes hormonal imbalance( aka the high sex drive ) like in humans .

Interesting fact about Orca(killer whale). When humans gave them their name, they were actually called whale killers, because they were seen killing whales. Eventually the name got switched and they started being called killer whales. And the reason they know a certain number of whales/dolphin are left is because they have been observed only going to certain depths. The undiscovered ocean area is past certain depths. So knowing that a specific type of sea creature only goes to a certain depth, can give marine biologists a number.

It's remarkable that dolphins are so much like humans, sometimes loving, sometimes rapey. It's remarkable that Colleen likes to argue with her man just like dolphins. Colleen is too high on life for pot! Sung to the tune of the Flipper theme song: They call her Colleen, Colleen, faster than lightning, No-one you see, is smarter than she, And we know Colleen, lives in a world full of wonder, Flying there-beside, beside the sea!

I agree that it may be difficult to count the population of a certain animal, but it makes sense for dolphins because I think they just exist in the 1% of the ocean that we know about. They live on the surface because they have to come up to breathe, so I think they’re probably easier to count than different kinds of sea creatures.

There is a name for animals once thought to be extinct that have popped up again, ‘Lazarus taxa’ (in reference to the beloved friend that Jesus was said to have raised from the dead). A Colombian bird, the Antioquia brushfinch, hit the headlines in 2018 when it was spotted by a local bird watcher on his way to Sunday mass. This was the first time it had been recorded in almost 50 years. Not a scientist, just Googled it 😂😂

Population estimates really never mean they're counting every animal, that's usually impossible. It's typically some type of mark-recapture method. You capture a certain number and mark them, then release them. Then do another round of capturing. The number that were recaptured versus captured for the first time can give you a good estimate of the population. There's a lot of different methods though! Just some insight from a conservation biologist!

Sometimes animals who are highly specialized to a small area, who are already near extinction when they are discovered, go extinct because they were already very few in number. We don't always know about them because they are in areas of the world who aren't managing them or who don't pay attention to factors like habitat destruction. The encouraging thing is that new species of flora and fauna are discovered nearly every day but we don't hear much about them unless they are a mammal, or something the public is more interested in.

49:35 I also can't handle it anymore, I was a chronic smoker for YEARS. I was what I always called a "do anything" smoker because I used to smoke a j before I would do anything. Going to eat? Smoke one first. Going to shower? Smoke one first. Going shopping? Smoke one first. Going to work? Smoke one first. Going to watch a movie? Smoke one first. No matter what it was, I was smoking one first and I wasn't someone who was "noticeably" stoned all the time. Then..... I became a mom..... and learned what real anxiety is.... I always *thoooought* I had anxiety when I was younger but the anxiety I get now that I'm a mom is WILDLY different- and smoking does nothing beneficial for it. So I just stopped one day when I decided it was no longer enjoyable, or serving me in any way. Now I have crippling insomnia hahahah surely it's related but I can't take the anxiety attacks that come when I smoke.

It's an ongoing trend unfortunately. We're killing off bugs (like bees & fireflies), birds and other small species. Pesticides, herbicides and destroying trees is affecting wildlife. Even compared to the 90s, there used to be a bunch of small grasshoppers and other bugs in the grass when I grew up. This is a big deal!! :(
