Peace be to you both! I'm REALLY late; just subscribed! I typed in "Black biologist" and your channel showed up. I earned a B.S. in Biology in 94'. I worked for a Biotech firm but, eventually became a Physician Assistant (Howard 00' & Univ. of Nebraska 03') and Health Educator (Doctorate A.T. Still in 12'). I think Biology is one of the TOUGHEST majors!😥 I failed Gen. Chem a few times!😭 I'm glad you two are doing well! It's so WONDERFUL to see young bruthaz and sistaz pursuing science degrees! "I never really want to talk about race!"🙄 I feel ya!😅 I had the same experience at PWCU. I would often be the only Black guy in my classes (until I went to HBCUs, though; Howard & UDC)! You two are WONDERFUL! I hope my daughter meets positive sistaz like yourselves when she goes to college, Lord willing! I wish you two the VERY best of succes in your positive endeavors! Hi there love, I love your honesty and I can understand your sentiments. What I can say is that we have to work hard not to compare ourselves to others. Trust me, I know it’s super hard not to and I still struggle with it. If your friends are truly good friends, then I’d let them know about your feelings. They could surprise you and you could learn their struggles too. Often times, we all have areas in our lives that we struggle in but may not necessarily display it to the public. As someone who often thinks of the worst possible outcomes, college can feel even more difficult. Take a breath, take a break, do something you love and try to get to the root of your insecurities. You’re much stronger than you think ❤️ thank you for watching!

Hey, I am a senior in high school and I really want to go to med school to become a surgeon. I applied for a bio major at at a college and I am really nervous for my chemistry classes. I didn't really enjoy chemistry sophomore year of high school so I'm concerned. I love biology and anatomy/physiology but chemistry is a whole different story. I just would like to know if you guys have some studying tips for me? Any specific subject in chemistry I should get a head start on?
@danabelle7736
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose! Great questions. I worked pretty hard for a good grade in Chemistry, but I owe that to seeking all the help that I could find. Chemistry wasn't my strong suit, but I went to sessions called SI (Supplemental Instruction) sessions provided by my school. In predominantly, difficult class where the passing rate can be a kind of low, my school has prior students who have done well in the class come to our lectures then hold sessions outside of class. That helped a lot for me. But for the most part, I just studied hard. It's all about the amount of effort you put into the class. To answer your second question, for general chemistry you'll learn a little bit of everything so I can't really say what exact subjects to look over. Think of the class as an overview of chemistry. For example, the first week of my chemistry class pretty much went over everything I learned in high school regarding chemistry. So stoichiometry, acid and bases, periodic table format are all fair game. I don't want to overwhelm you but those are some of the ways that assisted me! I hope that helped! If you have any more questions feel free to email me! :)

@danabelle7736

Hi! Don't worry about any of that. You will have time if you know how to manage your time. You'll probable have maybe 2 or 3 classes a day and then the rest of the day to yourself. Of course studying and doing homework will take some of that time, but also if you schedule your time well, you will still have more than enough time to do other things. For me, I was able to work, join various clubs, study abroad and enjoy the college life while still being a bio major. Yes, you will study a lot but you make your college experience. Science majors are a lot of work so I wouldn't advise slacking either. It's all in your time management really. Hope that helped!

How do i deal with time management? I am a bio major and I dont know what im doing anymore
@danabelle7736
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kelly! I completely understand that struggle. Start small and force yourself to make a schedule. Once you have your schedule, form a routine and try to stick to it as much as you can. Sometimes it will be difficult to get everything done, but have a visual outline of what I need to do helps a ton. Do one that works for you too. Also, a huge part of time management is believing that you are able to achieve what it is that you are planning on doing. The way we think about something can sometimes make or break our approach to something. Hopefully, my rambling has helped! I'll try and make a video on how I manage my time soon!

Oh sounds great! Studying is depends on the person really. Everyone has their own style and depending on the rigor of the class as well. I prefer more of a quiet area by myself to focus on everything. It has helped me a lot for chemistry/science class to read as much of the material as you can prior to class, then make connections once you get to class followed by after class studying and homework. That way you'll see the material several times and you'll hopefully be able to make connections. I studied whenever I had the chance to, but I say about studying for about 3-5 hours a day for all classes. That includes homework as well. Hopefully that helped! Good luck on your endeavors!

Hey! It's awesome you're considering a degree in biology. I have learned a lot in this major that I will be able to use in many different career options in the future. You are not limited to just working in a lab or being a doctor. I think being a teacher with a biology degree is a great avenue. I'm not quite sure I understand your question about the course. Are you asking about course load or just a bio class? As far as course load, yes it is quite rigorous, but you get what you put in. If you put in the work and at least try then you should be fine. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Lastly, I know you'd love for me to tell you this is the perfect choice for you, I cannot. You have to make that decision on your own. For me, I like my major and I've benefited from many opportunities provided in it. I hope you can enjoy it as much as I did! Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions then feel free to ask!

@danabelle7736

Hi Alice! So to become a surgeon you'd go through the process to become a doctor. You can major in anything as long as the Pre-med requirements are met to take the MCAT. With a major in biochemistry or chem, you will more than likely fulfill the requirements but you'd take more chemistry classes to finish your major. I had an intro to medical biochem and it was by far the most challenging class I've had, but I learned so much in that time frame. So a major in biochem can be beneficial. I can't decide for you, but I hope my insight helped! Good luck with applying and feel free to contact me if you need any more help!
