The problem is for ivies is that every single person applying has a near perfect sat, perfect gpa, athlete and a bunch of extracurriculars. The bigger issues it that theyre all the same extracurriculars so theres nothing particularly eye opening to the ao since they've seen so many applicants that have the exact same stats. You need to think outside the box and put activities on your resume that reflect to the real world and real accomplishments that match with your major.

This bro did everything on hard mode. Mad respect tho cuz he not *ONLY* got into some amazing schools, but he had the cajones to post his Ls and not take himself too serious. Still, Easy Mode would have been to select the least impacted STEM majors and then change your major your freshman year. This strategy helped me get into 3/5 UCs I applied and my stats were no where near impressive as his. For context, I applied under Applied Mathematics and then switched to Financial Mathematics. I believe the same thing can be done for Comp Sci, just go under Informatics or Information Systems. These majors are usually under the same school (e.g., of Engineering or Letters & Science). For some schools if it’s under the same department, you may even be able to keep the same advisor. The problem with public universities these days is that they require you to know the ins and outs. Even in university, you’ll have to be strategic about courses and time management to get the best GPA. I found myself not risking my GPA for more interesting/relevant classes in the fear of getting a B+. I wish the system would allow for some more intellectual curiosity and make courses hard-but not so that you have to weed through them to get to the finish line.

hey man, just my two cents as a fellow applicant this year. heard a lot of research and data to point out that during this year, almost every single college has received near double the amount of applicants they would have had under normal circumstances, and I can only assume that this can be attributed to the entire world moving out of lockdown. this surge forced a lot of universities into really tough decisions - which they kept postponing (considerably more deferrals and waitlists) so if anybody didnt get into some universities that they really wanted to this year, dont worry about it dude. dont downplay yourself. side note congratulations to you, Stanley on some great admits! hope everyone has fun in whatever endeavour they pursue!

What gets you in is showing a lot of interest in a University and writing a good essay, etc. Especially with many schools going test optional, the best bet for anyone looking to go to college is to invest a lot into a school you really love and theoretically have the grades to get into. I'm honestly surprised that GT didn't accept you. I know so many people with worse stats and extracurriculars who were accepted for engineering majors. The only things I could think of that caused so many rejection was the lack of AP classes, since that is considered to be the most rigorous high school course level. I don't think not having a weighted GPA made much of a difference since most colleges calculate each applicant's GPA themselves now, but another problem could have been your essays. From what I know, universities look for personality traits and goals in you writing that match their university. Like you really have to do research about eat university to see what they have that others don't that you think you be very beneficial to your education. Other than that, your stats were FLAWLESS.

As someone who was accepted to most of the schools you got rejected to many years ago here are my stats: 1560 SAT. GPA 4.8 don't remember weighted. 20+ AP courses with calc BC and ap stat taken as a freshman in hs. 8 college courses from a top 10 university and also some from a top 30 university. My hs allowed me to take transportation to and from my courses. 20+ 5's in all my AP exams. (Required by my hs). Extras were math club and representing the US u17 national soccer team, along with many other achievements in soccer. Your application lacks AP's and a clear commitment or specialization in one area. Nyu is decent but my recomendation would be save your money and go to a good in state or cheaper school. You can always apply as a transfer student. In life no one cares where you went to undergrad and graduate school is weighed much more heavily. Good luck

Damn…how does anybody get accepted to Ivy League if not this very well-rounded and exceptionally smart young man?
@viskia
Жыл бұрын
many ivy leagues aren't looking for "well rounded" people, they're looking for someone who is exceptionally good, or "the best" in one field. They can be great in every subject, but they're looking for a spike in one subject that the student is passionate about. A way to show that spike is to compete in competitions regarding that subject and winning, starting a club or an organization surrounding that subject, etc. Even with that said, this guy had incredible stats and the selectivity of ivies is honestly stupid (though i assume the sheer amount of schools he applied to affected his essay quality).

I also applied to 0 safeties with a mediocre GPA until my third year of high school and a 1290 SAT (which I obviously didn't submit), but stood out with my essay, extracurriculars, and international highschool education (despite being a US citizen). So far I've gotten into the University of Virginia, UCSD, but rejected by UCLA and University of Florida. Not bad at all! 😂

I think most colleges will look heavily into essays and regions. Colleges in your state/region will be more likely to accept you because it's more likely you will actually move to their school. If you apply to a random college from across the country, they might reject you without even looking further. Colleges want people that fit with their vision/personality. Applying to too many colleges is detrimental, as you need to do a LOT of research to know what they are looking for. I did 6 non-safety colleges, 3 in state and 3 out of state, Clemson, USC, and Furman in state, GT, Vanderbilt and UNC out-of state. I have a 1350SAT, 3.7gpa and 4.5wgpa. I did some community service, student of the year and led youth group at school, certainly not as impressive as yours. However, I spent weeks researching each college, watching vlogs from each, reading their website and their socials. I was accepted and granted full ride at all in state, and covered most of the out of state colleges.

@@changes777 yes I got accepted into all of them. Furman gave a 55k per year scholarship, USC and Clemson gave me 15k and 20k each (plus about 15k in state and federal scholarships/grants), Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech didn't give me any scholarships but agreed to give me in-state tuition if I did 4 years with them. I rejected Furman because I would have to live in dorm all 4 years, which they were not flexible ( I already knew this policy, since I did my research, and I also knew they where not great). I ended up staying in my city and finishing my 2 years of community college, and reached an agreement with USC they would honor all my credits when I transfer next year ( if you want to transfer, MAKE SURE you get this confirmation IN WRITING, signed if possible. They will try to wiggle off and make excuses to not honor their transfer agreements, as the more credits you have to take with them, the more $$$ ( happened to two buddies of mine))

Congrats on getting in! Your course load and how well you did in them is a big plus. Your SAT scores are solid - pretty much what any college would want. Bu your GPA could be a tad bit better (3.9-4.0). Your extracurriculars and race are what caused rejections/deferrals/waitlists where's your spike all of your extra curricular's are solid but your missing something unique tens of thousands of people are captain of a school sports team and almost every applicant is part of some club. Anyway, I don't mean to discredit any of your hard work, best of luck at NYU!

Hey! I'm an EECS major at Berkeley right now, but I have a ton of experience with the college admissions process and know a lot of Ivy League and UC readers personally. I want to emphasize how much changing schools hurt you. Colleges do not want to go through the effort of understanding 2 different GPA scales, course availability, and a lot more. It hurts your application a lot, and my brother went through the same thing. I think your results would have been a bit different if you were at the same school for all 4 years, but that's just speculation. Good stuff either way, and don't get caught up on anything other than having a good time in college!

A kid from my school transferred and got into Stanford. It does not hurt your application very much at all. What probably hurt him more was applying to nearly 30 schools, because his essays were probably not very well written because he had to write so many. It’s better to apply to < 15 schools so you don’t need to write so many essays and you can show commitment to the schools you’re applying to.
