One thing missing from this video honestly is any sort of discussion of community college. I essentially got 1.5-2 years shaved off my degree entirely for free with it, and worked on the side through part of it, and I think it might be one of the best decisions I've ever made. Its allowed me to be completely debt free and gave me some more time to figure out what I wanna do after high school and explore some other things I was interested in besides just my major there. The main thing you miss is a lot of the extracurriculars and other things, like you mentioned at the very end of the video but if that doesnt matter than community college makes infinitely more sense than normal college
@nikoyaps

Honestly I completely forgot to mention it so I'm pinning this comment. 100% if you do go the college route community college is the best way to go, 10x cheaper + it's just school so no bs distractions. Yes it's not as fun, yes it's not the "college experience" but it is the best budget version, thank you for mentioning this!

I second this and I live in Sweden, a country where we don't even have tuition fees, you still have to pay for study material (which can be absurdly expensive, paying literal hundreds of bucks just for a single book). One really important thing is at least to be eligible for higher studies, allot of the trade school things are also part of secondary education (at least over here). At least it keeps the doors open, if that fails we always have "Folkhögskola/komvux" to fall back to.

@@darbyharris3790 Not really, I feel like their generation (Gen X) was conditioned into that being the norm, so I don't fault them really. To be truthful though, there were times where I was upset with them a year or two after the fact (mainly because I had paid for most of it, aside from my first semester), but being upset with them over something that was supposed to help me, I just realized that it's wrong to hold any resentment for someone trying to help me, since they did believe it would help and weren't just doing it to get me out of the house and away from them like so many parents seem to do once their kids hit 18. It seems easy when you've been removed from a setting for so long to not really see how it morphs and changes overtime. Price of courses and books, along with some extra curriculars just to name a few factors have gone up exponentially, while it's very likely that the quality of the education has plummeted. From my experience too, it felt like most of the teachers on tenure were there to just collect a check unfortunately and did a horrid job of teaching anything meaningful, and/or would waste time going on tangents about nothing related to the course. I haven’t listened to all of this but I think this is the case UNLESS you want a profession that requires the degree ( Doctor, psychologist, teacher, etc.) For example, I really want to be a therapist, but the profession basically requires a masters degree. So, I have to go to college. The problem is many students think degree = money, so people go thousands in debt in a “good” degree instead of something they are passionate about. And I think that is perpetrated by many outside sources in society, when in fact, to find a perfect career is to find a purpose. And to find a purpose you need to look within, at what you value in life and what you think you are capable of doing day to day.

Flash forward the 2022 I went back to a community college, only because there were certain aspects of my business I started a summer prior I had issues running, and took the classes I needed. I got one more semester left and honest for those who are still insistent about college just start with community college, it’s 100 times cheaper, and in a way it’s more grounded between my collage is split into two campus one side tech school and the other side more traditional college.

Yep don't go to 4 year colleges and universities unless you're pursuing STEM, law, or medicine. There are very few outside of those that are actually worth pursuing. Call your local trade union for an apprenticeship or go to a reputable technical school to learn a trade of your choice. Community college programs for other professions are a good investment too. I talked to a guy once who went through technical school then to community college to be an AV engineer/technician making $70k. No where near as potentially body intensive as a normal trade. Looking for other training programs online for a career is also an option too. I'm sure there are some others out there that are outside of my knowledge.

Congrats on graduating btw, and with this newfound knowledge I think this helps everyone, even ppl who don’t agree, really just think about it. Colleges are built off of those doing labor, those colleges require money for people to stay there and learn. Really it’s just delaying the inevitable of getting a job or doing whatever outside of college. Making a plan for what YOU want to do is necessary as early as you can think of one. Don’t think that college will fix things, but instead think about how you can make something work. College sits in this sweet spot of "emerging adulthood", which is crucial for one's development in many ways, simply put, it's a period of self-discovery in life in which people can find themselves, explore the world literally and metaphorically, and generally learn what they want to do in life, free of too many debilitating responsibilities, etc. Many 18 year olds who just got done with high school and are thrown into adult life struggle massively, at least when referring to those who didn't have another way to this important part in their lives. But, as you said, with how expensive and stressful and whatever else it is, it more or less loses that which made it so important from a psychological perspective. And also, when talking about creation, it is weird, I may be *very wrong* on this and it is mostly an opinion but I felt like saying it even if I make a mistake, however, I feel like most artists who say they want to animate and are passionate about that, would go to college for that and end up with a job at Disney. That's cool in all, but he [artist example] work for a company, a company which expects him to be able to guarantee delivery of something, at a set date, that comes from something as unpredictable as the soul- this may be an exaggeration so perhaps take it as a example to prove a point even if it may be inaccurate. I am trying to say that it sort of "breaks the rules" of creation if that makes sense, it expects him to be a skilled animator who can adapt their style to fit for a new show production, it becomes stressful- which can ruin the creative process -and adds a deadline to something that didn't have one before, and incentivizes extrinsic motivation for something that is naturally intrinsic, among others I assume. There are also many benefits and counter-arguments to these: Many people find a balance and enjoy working like this, you learn important skills overall, and you usually get to work with other people, and many others which I probably don't know off, and it is a very valid career choice. And college is not the only way to this emerging adulthood, which is true. No matter how wrong I am, I do know such things exist and happen and that **"true"**, for lack of a better word mainly using it to contrast commercial art careers, creation is not about that- at least when not referring to the counter arguments, especially when that one artist probably just wanted to make pretty animations and fulfill his artistic vision and post them on KZitem and talk to the people in the comments. Some people may feel the need to do that through college instead of what they actually want to do. This is a bit different from what Niko talked about, but important nonetheless. I didn't do research and don't have nearly as much experience as Niko does but oh well.

High-school college credit classes and dual enrollment make it possible to get a full bachelor’s degree in only two years, thus saving a lot of money towards a high paying, mentally skilled career. I believe the majority of people SHOULD be in physical labor, not the other way around, but we still do need a few office workers. Bottom line is that there are ways to work the college money grubber, whatever occupation you choose.

Sure I could’ve learned the materials online but I feel like learning it at a school will equip you with massive knowledge. I only need 5-6 semesters to complete my A.S. degree and the rest of the subjects covered in the exam I can learn independently. I might consider transferring to a university but universities are expensive and there are engineers who don’t have engineering degrees. Those people most likely passed the FE exam and the EIT exam to obtain their engineer license. One guy who passed his FE exam has an accounting degree. Attempting to go to community college didn't make my family happy, and I've had to routinely leave the house fleeing from multiple family issues before. I absolutely hate hard labor jobs. I've done them before. Worked at a hotel for quite some time as Maintenance in an extremely laborious environment with constant renovations with just me and one other person on deck for 200+ rooms. Plus, I don't really do well in those trades anyways. I'm not so sure on what to do. Whether I try to get some sort of expertise in something but it's hard to justify to my family without getting berated. It's either I get a job (above a certain hourtly rate which is not possible here, $18 an hour here or above isn't possible honestly without a great deal of experience or if you know the person hiring) or go to school. Not community college, "real" college. Maybe I'm just spoiled man. Who knows. I'm not going to stop trying to figure out a way out of this horrid state, but maybe it's my own doing.

Starting to feel the same way, especially with a strong passion for computer programming. Do I spend 4+ years getting a bachelor's/master's? Go the self-taught route? Go to some bootcamp, and hope to god I learn everything? All the good money is with mega-corps (FAANG) and is often the main goal for people in my field. Not sure yet what I'm going to do, as I'm entering my last year of high school in August. I am, however, a dual credit student and *should* get an Associates Degree by mid-2025, but unsure how much would be accepted as it's a small community college in Indiana.

Im in the construction industry atm, and I'd say, dont go to college unless your born in a certain family with history and wealth, or if you can afford it. Ive been working in a trade for 4 years now, saving all my money, and I can now afford college without being in debt. So it gives me the option to go into college and not be in debt and also find different carrer paths that could be making way more money than construction while also enjoying work.

i'm from Italy, studying computer science in college, i am really passionate about it, but i'm sure it's not the same for many of my colleagues. I'm in second year and i've seen people not enjoying at all what they were studying and trying to cheat as much as possible in the exams and study as little as they could. I think the issue is the general idea that college == high paying work as you said, but it's important to say that those people went to college also because they feared what would have happened i they had a standard job for 40 years. it's given for granted that those jobs are shit and make your life miserable, but in my opinion that's not true in the slightest. Only if you accept the idea of a shitty job you will get a shitty job, if you keep looking for something that you like, you will find it eventually, and it doesnt have to be thanks to college

College isn't necessary but it opens more doors to success. You can have your own, with or without it. On my college, you are getting brainwashed with so much unnecessary stuff that's outdated or something that doesn't require much knowledge in general because it is integrated in softwares/instruments. Such subjects solely exist just so their bussiness continues without question, while you are being bombarded with 70% of empty knowledge you won't ever use in your future job. I'm on college (Croatia) and I'm planning to finish it, knowing a decent salary awaits me.

In Europe, you’re also paid alot less. The median household disposable income (PPP adjusting for cost of living to US standards) is under 30K USD…. The US median household income is 75K as of 2022. And yes there are high paying countries like switzerland but those are tiny outliers or microstates which even then some states outpay it

If you can get scholarships, grants, and you're in a major you like or dont disslike then i think college is worth it. I mainly don't agree with the stupid amount of debt you have to goin. Yes, a good majority of people end up paying off their debt, but the ones don't are struggling hard. The have to owe the government money is a huge hindrance to your financial power. If what you're trying to do can be learned in a cost effective way, go that route, if not try to get scholarships and grants. College is still useful, but only for the right people on a path where they deam it necessary.

I'm only 3 minutes in, but, In Denmark, when you turn 18, you will be paid to do higher education (colleges and universities and such). And I do believe that college isn't for anyone, my cousin and I, for example are the first one in our family to go to university. And this doesn't mean that our parents or grandparents etc. were stupid, but that it wasn't for them and they wanted to do something else. And besides, not all you want to do needs a degree. I myself would need a degree as I want to become an electrical engineer, and as well for my cousin who is studying medicine. Therefore I do not think that college necessarily a scam, especially where I am from, but not everyone should go to college or uni

I agree that college is being WAY too overpushed in our high schools. However, another important point is that many people went to college as a neccessity. Many of the blue-collar manufacturing jobs at the turn of the century were outsourced from the US due to crap agreements like NAFTA. Also, in many low to mid-skilled jobs that used to be filled by American workers have been taked over by illegal immigrants who speak no English and are willing to work dirt cheap ( since immigrants aren't actual citizens, employers could exploit them with lower pay, which creates a ripple effect that results in a pay cut for US citizens as well ). For these many reasons, many of the former blue-collar workers who lost their jobs and couldn't bear the landscape immigrants brought saw college as an opportunity to, you know, continue paying the bills. Now that college-based jobs are saturated, we live in a dystopian society well, whether you're blue or white-collared, you're kinda screwed...

Honestly, the only reason why I'm going to college is cuz I didn't wanna disappoint my parents. I grew up in a culture where school is a necessity, and if I didn't go to school, then it would be seen as a disgrace. How I see it, College isn't a scam, it's a business at the end of the day. You give em money to go to school for a piece of paper. They don't care if you call them a scam, they're still making money at the end of the day.

I would agree that college is a scam, if the guarantee wouldn't be there. But consideirng I'm European, where I come from, if I did college for one subject, I'm almost always guaranteed to get into the profession with said degree I got in college for the subject I did. Say, in the UK, I went to college for 2 years, did Motor Vehicle, which is essentially the subject that gets me into Car Mechanic as a profession. I was unemployed for 4 years since 2020 (you can guess why) and now in May of 2024, my dad has connections, lots of them, to garages that lack employees that have experience in said professions. I asked him if the new garage that he goes to to fix his Fords (he has 2, a 2017 Mondeo and a 2016 Focus) has apprenticeship opportunities. I haven't been able to get to one garage and work my bum off for it to get the experience to be a car mechanic in my free time too. So now I have to resort to apprenticeship as I lack the knowledge I used to have back when I graduated college. I do remember how to replace a wheel though, but that's less than bare minimum lmao. I was interested in this line of work (thanks to arcade/sim/simcade racing games) and I like technology, so I get both chances to use technology and cars to work with at the same time. I'm close to my dream job essentially. And if I can do it, so can you. You just need to find the right place that CAN and WILL provide you with what you need to be a success in life. This advice may work less in the US considering things work differently, but if it works out for someone in the US to do as I do, say apply for an apprenticeship in a profession and is willing to learn, then go for it. Nobody can stop you but yourself. But if you're unsure and cannot bring yourself to do it, ask for help from someone in said profession you are interested in and ask them to help you; or don't force yourself to do it if you don't want to.

I agree with this take. I wish you brought internships. So many schools have started requiring students to do an internship for college credit. The problem with this is that a good amount of them are unpaid. If you’re taking out all these loans you want to make some money in your summers. But if your school requires you to intern you may not be able to make any money. I think schools requiring internships really shows that the education has fallen off. The fact that we are at a point where employers want experience before you enter the field because they don’t believe schools are teaching you enough that the college system needs to be refreshed.

This is just a cope for people who are too dumb to get into a good college. Don’t get me wrong you can be wildly successful if you dropout or make a lot of money going to a trade school but most people are going to fail. Sure, some will make it but the exception doesn’t disprove the rule. But the networking and connections you will make at a good college are priceless.
