Hi Jason. As a fellow Jeep Wrangler JKU owner on 37s, I ***LOVED*** this video. I do have 2 suggestions, though: 1) Never use a tow strap with hooks. The ideal is a tow strap with loops and using soft shackles. 2) Avoid pulling other vehicles with your Jeep in reverse. The ring and pinion gears in your differentials are designed for **forward** pulling power. Pulling in reverse risks damaging them, and then you're really screwed. If you can't turn around and pull from your rear bumper, consider using your winch. GREAT video!!!

I see lots of comments on here sayings things like "don't these people have gloves" and "why don't they have snow tires". I live in Colorado Springs, and only about 10-15% of the population here is native to Colorado. This is a huge military and college town, and there's TONS of people here from all over the place. People come here all the time from places like Texas and Florida and they get out in this stuff unprepared. If you want to see how native Coloradans drive, look to the smaller towns where the newcomers don't want to live.

There’s honestly no need, if you don’t plan on driving in or around the mountains. Lots of people like that here. Our city & county depts are pretty damn good and keep our streets good. What everyone doesn’t know about this storm, is that it was supposed to hit around noon-1 pm. The city of Colorado Springs had already planned to shut the city down at noon, which is unheard of outside NYC. They & everyone else knew this was coming. The problem: Rain & ice came at 7:15am where I lived, Far East side out in the countryside. I know this bc I went to get smokes at 7am bc I was nervous about not having any. Lol. I live 7 min from town, and the closest gas station. Got my smokes and it took me 45 to get home bc the roads were 100% ice. No joke. I love driving in the winter but even i was scared. So now a city of roughly 850,000 is going hard with a plan to shut down at noon, all ice right now. So the city shut down immediately as to get Everyone home, and the storm came in like a wrecking ball. The first 7 hours had a combined average rate of 78 mph, every hour! Drivers had no chance in this one.

As someone else that helps pull out vehicles that are stuck in the snow, I will rarely let the other driver make the connection. A few years ago I was helping a Jeep Wrangler and I thought the driver knew what he was doing so I let him hook it up. Nope, he hooked the strap to the steering tie-rod -- put a big bend in it. He had a heck of a time driving it down the mountain road with probably 45 degrees of tow-in. Sure you can argue that it's their car so it's their problem if they hook to the plastic bumper cover and it gets ripped off. But I go out driving in the snow because I enjoy HELPING people. If their car gets damaged, they won't be happy and neither will I.

Before I got my 4Runner I had a 91 Wrangler (6cyl/5spd manual)...great Jeep but the wipers were shit in winter storms always icing up like yours did here. Just one reason I switched to Yota. Had a storm like this in WI a while back where the north-south Hwy 14 was totally drifted over about 2ft deep and blizzard conditions. Going home from work at 2am my 4Runner was powering through fine in Dane County where they had plowed at least once in the last few hours. Got to Rock County line and no plow had been there at all. Turns out there were about 20-30 cars and trucks all lined up and stuck for next five miles to Evansville, my hometown. All vehicles had people stuck in them. I could get thru slowly but not around all the stuck vehicles. I did not dare go out into the plowed cornfield. Called 911 and they said the plows would not be out until morning. Was resigned to spending the night in my truck in the blizzard when a huge red tractor slowly came up the road plowing a one car wide lane through the stuck cars. A couple guys on-snowmobiles we’re checking on each car. After plowing the lane that farmer pulled every vehicle onto the road that was stuck. We all formed a 5 mile line behind him into town. Turns out they were farmers from just outside town and came to our rescue. They didn’t expect to be payed but everybody gave them cash and thanks as we passed by. I was the last vehicle and that farmer was grinning from ear to ear as I gladly paid him. He probably made about $700 that night. Blizzards can be lots of fun helping folks and playing with our toys so long as you are well prepared.

Back in the day in WI we would always jump in the truck to go snowboarding at DevilsHead in conditions like this. It’s the only time WI gets decent powder! It’s a winding 10 mile country road off the highway to get to the hill. We all had lifted 4X4’s with great tires. Often the deep snow completely covered everything and the road disappeared. We would blast through the powder by memory and feel often realizing we were in the plowed cornfield by the ruts or the racket of cut cornstalks hitting the underside of the truck. The drive was as much of a blast as the boarding was! Lol

I heard the rear end fluid was setting up and people were driving with one wheel
@andrewsnow7386
5 жыл бұрын
If the rear end fluid set up, it would be more like having a limited slip rear end - encouraging both wheels to drive at the same speed. One wheel drive would more likely be the brake on one wheel being frozen on. Consider this -- If either wheel is rotating, then the ring and pinion in the rear end are turning, so the fluid isn't really set up. But, lets go ahead and assume the fluid is really stiff and hard to move. Now, besides the ring and pinion, there are the side gears and the spider gears at the center of the differential. When both wheels turn at the same speed, then there is no moment between these gears. These gears only turn om their axis when the wheels are turning at different speeds. So, having VERY stiff oil would make it harder for these gears to move against one another, which would make the wheels want to spin at the same speed. It would in fact be a crude viscous coupling type limited slip. This video shows how a differential works. At 2:15 you can see how the spider gear(s) and side gears move at the same speed as the ring gear. There is no relative movement between them when the wheels are turning at the same speed. Only when the wheels are turn at different speeds is there relative moment between these gears (3:35). kzitem.info/news/bejne/tIWd1Zmgsax3a5g

One thing I've found that works is if the snow is powdery, keep the heater and defrosters off.If the windshield is cold enough the snow just bounces off.

in this day and age, you MUST make them hook up their own car, possible have the sign a waiver, or get it on video acknowledging you are not a professional and they hooked their own car up. i'd hook up to a receiver hitch or tow hook, after thats im not sure it's worth finding that 1 person that tries to sue you for cracking their bumper.

Too true! I worked for a PD for 16 years and pushed out countless stuck cars (by hand because our DEPT stopped pushing cars out due to liability). Even then (as we “Good Samaritans” froze, got sprayed by slush etc while the drivers stayed inside clean & warm)..even then we often had claims that we had damaged their vehicle while pushing them out. I especially liked the ones where the damage was somehow in the front of the car when we were pushing from the rear! A lot of cops refuse to touch stuck cars these days, just call the tow company and here you go...a nice fat bill.

You need 2 things new wiper blades & bubba rope. Bubba rope is 5 times stronger than chains or web belt. Thanks

The wiper problem was melted snow on the inside of the glass. With 70 mph winds, each time you would open the door snow would blow in.

Parked in the middle of the freeway, Really, find the edge and park there, accidents waiting to happen.... 25mph or less all the way home and stay there. When the wind pushes you loose it is time to get two in the mud and stay there a minute.

It was difficult to tell were the edge was. Plus some cars hit drifts that piled up in the middle of the road and the cars got stuck. It was a crummy day but thank God it happened in March. Most of it has already melted off.

This was nothing, I'm in Winterpark , you Nancy's in the springs didn't go through anything, we got our butts handed to us. I did two 14hr days in a loader just trying to get folks moving again up here and was none of the clean up yet. Seen plenty of worse though was nothing compared to the 7ft dump in 2 days we got in I think 04 maybe.

People apparently don't have COMMON sense anymore you live in a state known to have blizzards and surely you had at least 12 hours notice this was coming stay off the friggin roads people.

Common Sense is a thing of the past. I say that so many times a day to myself on some of the stupid things that people do these days. I also have a survival kit in my car summer and winter. I was born and raised in NE. and still live there and I have Common Sense.

When weather like this is random people learn their first time. It is hard to judge without experience. Not realizing a vehicle's limitations is a problem for more than just yourself. I had an encounter where I was in heavy snow and was shoveling myself out of a situation. A bunch of kids in a Scout came by laughing at me. The plow went by me and I got out and up the road a piece was this Scout way off the road hung up. They even asked me for my shovel. I laughed, too.
