🎶 nothing compares, nothing compares to youuuu 🎶 PO49 was such a great mixer that it's hard to pick another. I was pleasantly surprised with Jackson's in this video so I'll have to look into that, but I still really like W&Ns muted tones compared to the yellowness of the others. I had a dream the other night that I sold one of my tubes on eBay and got like $150 for it, but immediately regretted my decision. It's priceless!

The only single pigment PO49 I have left is an incredibly old tube of Winsor & Newton and it's just not the same depth of colour as the Daniel Smith was or the same as their mixed pigment hue even. I wonder if the the pigment I heard about being produced and sold as PO49 is similar to the W&N paint? I haven't seen it, only heard about it's existence. Other than that I have a few odd paints that have it in mixture, including old W&N Sap Green (precious!) and Hooker's Green and some limited edition colours from Daler Rowney several years ago.

I'm lucky enough to have a few tubes of the DS PO49 version and still have half tubes of the original mixes of Sap Green, Undersea Green, Quin Deep Gold and Quin Sienna. However, I do have a newer tube of DS Quin Deep Gold which is also a mix of PO48 and PY150. Even though it's deeper, new QDG behaves more like the original PO49 than the new mix of DS QG (less neon yellow undertone of PY150) and in my experience mixes better, more natural greens than the new QG, so just a suggestion for those who miss it. QDG comes in 5ml tubes for anyone who wants to give it a try without long-time commitment :)

Excellent review as usual Oto! I’m one of those odd ducks who love the M. Graham version precisely because of the bright yellow tint. It extends its useful mixing range on a landscape palette because it fills multiple mixing roles. These are awesomely useful comparisons though. I had no idea how well it compared in that regard until watching this.

It's so nice to see all of them through these tests. And to maybe point a bit at the old Sennelier one and wonder what happened there XD

Thank you, Oto, for this great video series! After watching this episode I'm actually glad for not ever having the original quin. gold, because for me there's nothing to miss or compare to.

I myself love the W&N Quinacridone Gold but I really want to buy the Jackson's. I am ashamed to say it, but I prefer the W&N Quin Gold to the old PO 49, except when color mixing (especially greens). I have a BUNCH of the new versions and have used the M Graham Quin Gold a lot and it is definitely too yellow, but I gotta use it up. The QOR is beautiful too but doesn't tint down as quick or nicely as the W&N. I'm excited to try Jackson's and thanks so much for this episode!!!

Me too, I've never had the W&N cauliflower like that on me. One I discovered recently that I'm liking is by White Nights, they call it Indian Gold and it'd beautiful.

Thank you for this series Oto! My first introduction to Quin Gold was Qor's High Chroma set. I think I prefer the look of Holbein's and Schminke's, though I'm worried I won't like them in practice, since I'm used to that intensity of color that I get from Qor. I'm learning gradually that I don't like honey-based paints as much, so even though M. Graham is cheaper and very similar to Qor in hue, I think I'll pass. Perhaps I was lucky to never get the chance to try the original, since its discontinuation seems to have caused a lot of heartbreak in the watercolor community. Sometimes it's just better to be ignorant, lol :)

I never used the Daniel Smith original Quin Gold. I didn’t know any better, so I began my quin gold adventures with W&N’s mix. I didn’t use it in any large washes, so never experienced the cauliflowering issue. But I loved the W&N color on the page, and added a dab to all my travel palettes for the painting of breads, dried leaves, or certain lanscapes with brown rock formations or sandstone.

Thank you, this is so valuable. I bought a few tubes of old D.S. Quin Gold PB49 two yrs ago, DS headquarters had several. It really shines as a mixing color to make my fave earthy green when mixed with Sap Green (ugh another lost color). Thank you Oto!

The 1st Quinacridone Gold I ever tried was Winser & Newton because I was a total novice in 2008. It was just the hue. I loved it but found it very hard to re-wet once dried. Then a friend told me about the real deal, PO49. She used to get it in Maimeriblu brand but they quit using the pigment by the time I started watercolor. Then she found it in Daniel Smith and let me know, so I bought some. I loved it too. I have since tried many brands of Quinacridone Gold Hues since PO49 ran out. I still have some DS Quin Gold tubes but the closest to it in my mind is still Winser & Newton. Just a drop of Glycerin to a half pan sized pile of paint and there is no problem re-wetting. To this day I will still use Winser & Newton Quin Gold if my real deal is not within reach or handy. It's not the same but it's good in its own way. I never have any problem with it blooming. It has never happened to me but then again, I learned many years ago that you do not put a wet brush into a wash that is already settling unless you want blooms. When the paint begins to settle, you cannot add a brush into it that is wetter than the wet wash. I do not get blooms no matter what pigment I use. Thanks for sharing so much.

Since I don't have anything to compare it to either I love the M. Graham Nickel Quin Gold. I use it when I want to brighten up anything. I think I like it because it's brownish gold but the yellow makes it brighter. I use it a lot. For me I can always tone down a color but hard to make it brighter. But I agree with InLiquidColor... the original is priceless.

None of the hues matches with the original PO49 that is an orange and it shouldn't have a so bright yellowish undertone. The addition of PY150 into any mix is completely irrelevant and wrong IMHO. The most accurate imitation of the original PO49 pigment that I've manage to mix with other colours is by mixing PR101 Transparent Oxide Red with PY129. A 2:1 mix will give you a very accurate match of the original colour with similar mixing properties.

Jackson quality is worst based on the tube l received, lots of binder than pigment.
