Thank you!! I always mixed black and white to desaturate my colours, and the intensity just disappeared. So, I just started to paint with a lot of thinner added. I finally understand what I did wrong. I am so grateful. I love painting but I am quite bad at understanding colours. I have searched for tutorials everywhere and I finally found something useful.

@@youthanek I'm a year late, but he explains it at the start of the video. Hue is basically the color. The hue can be yellow, green, red, etc. Saturation is the intensity of the hue (color), or the words he uses is how pure the color is.

this is really helpful and informative. I am not an artist but enjoy playing and don't often like the colours I pick together. And your video is making me understand why. I had no idea about the grey and about mixing complementary colours together and about everything else you talk about in your video. It's perfect for me. I am now going to watch it again as there was too much to take in the first time. And then I may even look up Matisse .... Thank you Scott.

I can't believe I got this far without knowing what hues are. It is difficult for me to understand how things are explained . Because I have Dyspraxia. A mild form of Dyspraxia. Though it never feels mild. I understand when you say that saturated colours need a bland background to take centre stage. That made perfect sense to me. I just tend to get so confused when I hear other terms for the colours in between the others on the colour wheel. I'm currently trying to learn also about what colours to use in shadows .

RGB are the primary colours of light(how your computer screen presents colour), CMY are the secondary colours of light but the primary colours of paint and print (the inks in your printer) K is black because B can't be for Blue and Black - hence CMYK.

You're right. It's all a language deficiency. I believe that if we wer to teach our toddlers better language to define differences between light blue and cyan, they would grow up with a better visual colour perception and would likely find this video obvious. Wine connoisseurs have in common a tremendous vocabulary with which to describe taste and therefore appreciate the subtleties better than someone unable to categorize taste so well.
@ScottNaismithArtist

The colour wheel in this video is only in existence because it panders to our poor ability to percieve colour properly caused by a lack of early vocabulary. CMY wheel is the only one that could be described as accurate. As for red/green, colours don't have to be complements to work together in certain contexts.

Ok. I'm a computer programmer, so maybe I'm off base here, but I don't understand my artists use a Red Yellow Blue color wheel. Those aren't true Primary colors. Yellow and Blue are complimentary colors!! Look at RGB or HSV color space. When Scot mixes yellow an purple/blue on the canvas, he doesn't get a great gray. he gets a muddy brown. This is because those colors aren't complimentary in RGB color space. Yes it is desaturated, that color ramp might useful, but it's not gray. Some color ramps that include gray are Red to Cyan, Green to Magenta and Yellow to Blue (i.e. RGB primary colors and their compliments). Or more generally, color who's Hue varies by 180 degrees in HSV/HSB color space.

Ah, in his next video Scott take down the RGY color wheel myth. Awesome. I'd say 95% of the video on youtube are from old art school hacks peddling the same RGY as primary colors nonsense. Watch the next one. It's good.

Are intermediate and tertiary colors the same thing? If the primary colors are red, blue and yellow and the secondary colors are orange, violet and green, then it follows that the third group of colors would be a variation of the primary and secondary colors i.e. blue violet via ratio i.e two parts blue and one part red. Any other combination would be subtractive, to the point of the continuous variation of one color brown. One color does not make a tertiary group. If this is tertiary colors exist please name one. Please help?

This is the conventional wheel, for those without the ability to see beyond its flaws. It only seems correct because of our lack of early learned vocabulary. The beginning of my 'Truth' video explains that this theory taught all round the world (including by myself) is inaccurate. I now only teach the CMY wheel which contradicts RYB but is accurate. Notice that, despite what I tell you, the complementary colours mixed in this video are really blue and yellow, correct for the cmy wheel.

Hi and congratulations!!! If we talk about skin tone colors,based on color pigments (subtractive CMY) when skin is red (Magenta) and your clothes near your face are green ...the magenta face color is stronger, that could be given because of complementary of colors or depend also of color saturation?

Buttered Lumps The color wheel is wrong. It was made by flawed people with a flawed understanding of color.
@TheReaverOfDarkness

Buttered Lumps Says nature. The definition of primary colors is that with a proper set of them, all other colors can be made from them, but that the colors themselves cannot be made from any other color combination. The only set of colors that matches that description (with pigments) is cyan (reflecting green and blue fully, absorbing red fully), magenta (reflecting red and blue fully, absorbing green fully), and yellow (reflecting red and green fully, absorbing blue fully).
@tickycup

He goes into this in another vid. Though for beginners it's sometimes easier to start with the incorrect wheel that they teach in schools because since primary school we are taught the rainbow. It was easier for me anyway.
@TheReaverOfDarkness
9 жыл бұрын
tickycup Well the rainbow is actually red-green-blue with magenta and cyan appearing more accurately than blue+yellow pigment green, but people often have difficulty seeing this. I think if we were taught the correct color wheel in school from the beginning, we would not find it difficult at all; if anything it should make more sense because you won't have to learn how brown works.
