Man this episode hit differently. Columbo usually does his schtick showing how clever he is but this time it felt like he's really holding back. He said he admired her all of his life. Imagine admiring someone and you find out they're a murderer? Falk picked correctly when choosing how to express his emotions in this scene.

You remind me of something I was talking to my Dad about a while back. We'd been watching the Thin Man movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy. And in EVERY movie, Nick Charles has once again retired from the detecting, and is basically dragged into another investigation. And every time, the murderer turns out to be the most "decent" person among the suspects. So I realized the reason he wanted to stay retired was because it takes a toll on the heart, learning that the nicest and most pleasant people you know turn out to be monsters in disguise. He didn't want to go through that again and again. And I don't blame him. It also explains why all of his closest friends in those movies are ex-cons. They wear their darkness and ugliness on their sleeves. You know exactly who they are.

Out of all of he and his wife’s favourite celebrity murderers, this one was a gut punch to Columbo because he admired her so much. In the previous scene where he watches that movie with her wearing the man’s trench coat and fedora, it wasn’t one of his usual gleeful “aha” moments, it was more like a feeling of despair and disappointment? He really didn’t want it to be true.

I hadn't noticed it before but Columbo tries to calm her by holding her arm at 5:15. Falk said one of his cardinal rules about the Columbo character was that he would always treat everyone, including the killer, with dignity. This episode shows why legendary actress Anne Baxter won an Oscar. They were able to cast many Oscar-winning actors in Columbo.
@vohloo9797
2 жыл бұрын
Whether it's out of the character's moral choice or him being professional, it is something that he does regardless of who the killer is. In one episode he responded to a killer's expressed disdain for him saying that he doesn't like anything about him besides his culinary skills. So even with extreme dislike for someone he can show the same attitude he always has and also separte the good/admirable aspects of them despite their nasty personality.

One thing I love about Peter Falk's character is, no matter how much he likes (or dislike) his suspects (Louis Jordon, Robert Foxworthy, etc.....), he treats everyone with dignity and respect. The world would be a much better place if everyone behaved like Columbo.

I learned a lot from this character. Be curious, be clever, think. Know more than you show. Never intimidate someone, because that would make them hostile. Always seem more harmless than you are, because it gives your opponent a sense of security. Don't press it, but don't give up, either. Be empathic, try to feel with your opponent - it gives you insights which you normally would miss. Allow yourself to feel sorry for someone who has done something bad, but always prioritice the laws, because society needs them to function.

That would’ve been a nasty job to do, especially if he was decomposed, although in the 10 year duration, he would’ve been just bones, and would be easy to dispose of. You’re right though, eventually someone would’ve dug it up to lay water pipe and would’ve discovered him, and jail would not be an option at that age?
