Perhaps a thick layer of Ash fell across the top of the lava flows insulating them and allowing them to cool slowly over the extended time it takes to form the columns. the pattern shows slow cooling.. as the lava cools it contracts in size and forms cracks that become columns. but there is one site that has crinkle cut french fry look. i wonder if a Mega Quake or a Earthquake caused by an Eruption early in the cooling time could have sent shockwaves thru the slightly cooled columns creating the dual patterns of the Crinkle cut fries formations of columns. here in Los Angeles during the Northridge quake.. 3.1G's of vertical acceleration was measured. the quake tossed my sister and her husband almost 4 feet in the air over their bed twice during the beginning of the quake. look at the Vasquez Rocks feature of tilted slabs. its only a few miles from the San Andreas fault.. there is a pattern there when you look at it from overhead that one shockwave came from the northeast and another from the north.. this could have created a rogue wave effect that accelerated the ground movement so hard that the shockwaves past thru before the ground could come down.. breaking it into sections and falling back in at angles .. could not be a crush and pushed up.. that soil is sediment from floods.. it does not crush.. but it would ride a shockwave .. just a few thoughts.

@dlwatib

It went sideways... the lava was very fluid, about as fluid as water in fact. Some of it flowed clear across the states of Washington and Oregon and ended up in the Pacific Ocean! Once it began to cool it shrank and split into the vertical semi-crystalline structures we see today. You're right that the lava didn't flow upward to create these columns. One closeup look at it and you'll realize it was always rock, originally molten rock, never anything living.

not magma, hundreds of giant cracks in the ground spilling lava for millions of years. when it cooled it cracked in this pattern, just like when mud dries up and shrinks it cracks in these same patterns.

May i be the first who thought and write about the guess of this idea Whoa my discovery! (lol) another view checking if could be Pyramids stones are made from basalt ,,,,,,,,,,, may Pyramids was made on a structure like this kind .will be alot less cutting and less human nedded and less years for them to complete Pyramids.Some of this basalt are square and long some are octagons are perfect for cutting square blocks or triangles .Plus no need to carry them, because the Pyramids could be made on same structure.Maybee is the reason no one know from where this many blocks was cut and transfer there.I saw a video of another basalt formation video and look just like a Pyramid that is actually falling appart with the blocks all over the floor.

@@sweetloveelmowe know its lava because we compare it to other rocks. I live on top of this rock. If you took a chucnk of it and compared it to one that just came out of hawaiis volcano, they would both be exactly the same composition down to the trace gasses.
